Got the Savage Axis 223 back out today. I have had these rounds loaded up for a while. I put the Vortex Viper 6-24x50 on the 223. The load data I used today is from the 223 Service Rifle. The rounds were showing pressure signs for both powders with my higher charges. I did puncture one primer with the 2230. I expected these to shoot a little better, but was very happy with the first charge of 2230. I will be loading up more with this charge to try another day.

Another good vid with some great load info on the 223!

Don’t worry about the group sizes, that’s all you. Worry more about the SD and extreme spread of each set.

Very nice work ! Thank you. Short, sweet & to the point. I have wondered how these powders would perform, as I am running low on my H322.

Thank you very much for actually showing the max charge weights in the book, I bought some Hornady 68 gr hP's that I wanted to use Varget with to find out my old 4th edition Hornady load book does not list varget and the other load books I have do not have the Hornady 68gr hp listed. I'm pretty sure Varget wasn't around when that Hornady book was published. A lot of people tell what their load is but sometimes they are over the max recommended charge weight and that's something I don't do. I could not find this info anywhere and wanted to work up a load this weekend and didn't have time to order a new loading book through the mail though I will be ordering one anyway for other loads.

My savage 12 FV likes 25.5 of Varget ,no pressure signs even at 90 plus degrees. But that is my rifle and , 3140 fps for an average , 26 inch barrel .Work up slow in your barrel. AA 2520 is good also at 24.5 grains again work up slowly. Tac also is good, won't give my load for that one though.

Yet another information filled production from 243 ODT's, Varget has produced some outstanding groups for me in my Savage. Your rig really likes that 22.5 Gr's of Accurate 2230, that's one for your reloading notes, from where iam sitting that load is a keeper.

The Accurate 2230 runs perfect through my powder measure. Only tricked a couple. That's worth a lot.

From what I understand Accurate designed this powder just for this round. That why it's called it 2230

Just FYI Accurate’s data for the 68 Gr BTHP with A2230 is 23.0 Grs Max for 2977 FPS from a 24 inch barrel

Just rewatched this vid. Lil trick I learned up N was to start about midway but use magnum primers set just slightly below flush ( CCI) and stop 1 grain under max. The mag primers were because of the COLD I usually shot in. For some reason my best low cal (Sako 22 hornet & Remington243/6mm) bulletts were the Sierra Blitz. 45 grain for the hornet & 85 gr for the 243 & 6mm. Didnt do 223 at all. They would anchor a wolf @ 400 yds or less. (BIG wolves up there, 140-160 lbs) 1 entry hole, no exit & a hell of a mess inside. Also reamed out the primer flash hole just a tad & deburred the flash hole inside. That really closed the velocity variations. For what thats worth......like you, did the "ladder" loadings for each rifle & when I found its "cherry load" stuck w it from then on. REALLY liked the IMR powders from 243 to 45/70. Except the Hornet which was H110.

here in California we have to use lead free ammo for all hunting state wide, can you do a test on lead free ammo? also what bullet weight would be best for my savage 223 one in nine twist rate 22 inch barrel.

My 1:9 Compass will shoot the Hornady 55gr sp into one big hole, but the 68gr hover at an inch or a little over. Maybe I need to give the 2230 a try.

Mine really likes the 40g Vmax with IMR 4198. Got them going about 3400fps. I really like the 2230 for how well it meters. No trickling required.

@@243Outdoors I've been shooting a lot of blc-2 under the 55 gr bullets. It meters well for me and shoots little bitty groups. I haven't found a combination that works with the 68 gr yet, so I'm definitely interested in the 2230. Varget hasn't worked for me either.

Dosent bbl heating change the POI after the 3-4 shots?? What scope do u use & why? Thanks!!
@243Outdoors

Sometimes the cold bore shot will be off, but it generally takes several rounds for it to start stringing shots. Of course the outside temperature will speed or slow this up or down. At this temperature I would feel comfortable shooting 20-25 rounds before giving it some time to cool down. As far as the scope, I have been using a Sightron SiH-Tac 3-9x40. It has been an excellent scope, but I prefer a little more power than 9x. I have this Vortex Viper 6-24x50 borrowed from a friend, and decided to try it out on this rifle.

243 Outdoors Thats amazing, 3x9 at thoes ranges. Had to laugh, my Gunsmith has been trying to get me to put that Exact Vortex on all my rifles. Especially the 270s. Said Id never regret it. I always sight in on a COLD bbl because I hunt & never see more than 1 shot. Lucked out & got a Browning A-bolt w the "Boss system" & it really works! W the 150 grain Rem core locks it prints 1 hole @ 100, 1 raggidy hole @ 200, cloverleafs @ 300 & .5 @ 500. Never tried beyond that. Using an economy ZEISS 3x9x 36 ( Diavari C) Bought the rifle used from an old gunsmith who was going blind & dumping his collection cheap. Has a hardened/polished sear set at 2.5 lbs & NO creep at all. Amazing lucky buy. $500 complete. He told me I could hit an elk in the eye @ 300 & I scoffed. So he sent me to the range w his Lead Sled & said to wait 5 mins between shots. I did, Went back & apologized feeling REALLY stupid & paid for it. After he was through laughing at me he sold me his Winchester Mod. 70 (Also 270) w a NIKON 4X12 & it shoots almost as well for my wife. ($400) (We spent 27 years in Alaskan bush & hunting was our food.) That ol boy knew his stuff. Hers has a 3 lb trigger. Up north we had one of thoes "Once in a lifetime" Ruger M77s in 300 win mag that shot 1 hole @100 right out of the box after I did the bbl break in bit. Was printing .5 during break in & just got tighter as break in progressed. Got lucky there too, had a military friend who GAVE me an experimental sniper scope designed to shoot only 1 load. A 180 FMJBT Mil ball round & it only had 1 setup on the knobs. Dial in @ 100 & put the caps back on forever. After that turn the front rectical until perfectly focused at any range & shoot dead on. W THAT scope & ONLY that scope/load (4x16x 50) I could print 1 MOA @ 500. I had its trigger fire hardened/polished & set @ 2.5 lbs. That rifle was stolen by a "so called" friend I left it w up there when we left. BUT, I kept the scope. Had to sell it later during hard times. In ANY case, love your vids! Thoes long strings of shots u make really weird me out thou. BBL heating & burnout have always been a major concern of mine. When u said how many shots w/o cleaning that REALLY flipped me out! I cant even imagine that. 😁

do you feel like your axis is more accurate than your predator?

About the same. Predator is a much better rifle as far as features.

Serious question, yer not really happy with the way that rifle shoots, are you? Not me. My rifles shoot the Hornady 75 a better in both 1 in 8 twist & 1 in 9 twist AR's with AA 2230, 4320, SW Match, Blc2. CFE 223.
