I have a ghost monotub on its 4th flush still putting out monster fruits! It's starting to look pretty tired so I'm planning on tossing it because my tidal wave is only a few days from 100% colonization. Thank you for the video Ed the time of day is perfect for me because it's early AM in New England so it's a good start to my day.

Turn your tub upside down. Form and tape your liner on the exterior. Turn tub over and slide that liner in 👍

Not sure if it's a case but case scenario but in my experience the spore dump didn't prevent future flushes, use to harvest early in case it would but after so many times of missing a "perfect" harvest window I've noticed if there's gonna be more flushes they're gonna come almost regardless of what happens... I've left cakes sitting that were visibly super spent and had layers of spores on top and get some awesome looking fruits from a random 5th or 6th flush. But obviously not everyone's gonna have the same experience idk 😂

I’m calling BS on the spore drop ruining the second flush. I generally try to pick before the veil splits but I work out of town and have come home to many spore drops over the years, never had a problem with subsequent flushes

I agree. I was trying to be nice to the people who repeat old myths.

I'm glad both of you are calling it B.S. too. I thought maybe I missed something, but I have never noticed any problem with spores deterring or blocking subsequent flushes. I think the issue might be more of a dry, slightly abused substrate cake that isn't properly rehydrated and doesn't have much nutrition left in it. I do a dunk after the first flush, and usually toss it after the second, so thought maybe I was missing something. Thanks for the confirmation. It might take a while to get rid of these myths. Might be worth it to make a list and a video about that!

I don't like to put the cakes in the trash, I live in the forest so I find a suitable place with a lot of moisture and leaf litter and burry the cake under it. To introduce the species to the area and make them become a part of the ecosystem. As for the side pins, I have pulled done it with and without, and it doesn't help reduce side pins, it just hides them. People seem to think a liner keeps a tub from getting side pins, but it just hides them lol. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. So I go without using a liner because it's just one more thing that could cause contamination in my opinion.

Took a colonized bag of Tidal Wave, mixed them with the exact same amount of substrate into the exact same sized shoe boxes but I put a liner in one but not the other. Same conditions next to each other and found that the one with the liner has re-colonized at least 35% faster and produced a heavier pin set covering more surface area, also shown color a couple days before the one without the liner. Gonna test it again with another batch soon to see if the results are reproducible.

Liner vs. No-liner. Very rabid fans on both sides. I just don't like cleaning tubs/shoeboxes. My garbage bags fit right in nice and easy.

Im sure someone already has asked this, and its probably a silly question, but, what ya think would happen if foil was used as a liner?

Thanks Doc! Have you ever experimented with a casing layer when going for 2nd flush?
@edwardgrand
@edwardgrand 2 месяца назад
I think I might have many years ago, but not recently. I usually only go for one good flush now, but if it's not cooperating during the first one, I'm not gonna dedicate much more time to it.

Question: during colonization, Do you notice excess moisture, and small water pools between the shoebox and liner from condensation water dripping down the side and under the liner? or would that be a sign of over-hydrated substrate trying to evaporate then getting caught in the tub and dripping down the sides and under the liner? maybe this could be another reason liners are helpful.. separating those small pools of water out of the sub /shrug
@edwardgrand
@edwardgrand 10 месяцев назад
I only colonize for 3-5 days. I then remove the lid and fruit in shoeboxes that are open to the tent air. There isn't time for the condensation to creep down the side. After dunking/first flush, I'm careful to remove water that has pooled under the liner. Free liquid water is a reservoir for bacteria.

Makes me wonder , I hear longer fruits are sometimes cause by the fruits trying to reach for air but your shoeboxes are in a tent so I would say it’s more genetics than anything … nice job Ed , beautiful fruits there ✨🤜🤛

It's definitely something with air exchange/CO2, and oxygen. Cubes seem to react differently though. They get short and stubby with too much CO2, whereas Pleurotus get long and leggy.

Have 2 iceberg tubs that are just starting to fruit or what looks like crazy mutant blobs with blue hue to them. Is this normal can't find much info anywhere
@edwardgrand
@edwardgrand 10 месяцев назад
The Iceberg cultigen seems to be capable of all kinds of 'looks' or phenotypes. The first time I grew it, I got squats on the first flush, and a mix of tall/squats on the second. It seems to do all kinds of things depending on the individual grows, environmental conditions, and isolations. Definitely get some swabs so you can work on your own isolation in the future. Who know what you might come up with :)

Other than your RU-vid channel I can't find much help on videos of stage by stage on different fruits to help me. Guess it will just take a couple of flushes to study my species? Any suggestions on platforms that aren't monetizing fruits and info
@edwardgrand
@edwardgrand 10 месяцев назад
I would just watch as many RU-vid videos as possible. I know it is hard at the beginning, but after a few flushes, the disconnected stages of growing will all start to make a more linear sense. I would love to do a spore to spore series, but right now, I don't have the time to put that together. It's definitely on the list of things to do. You can always find me on the social media if you need help. I am pretty easy to find on FB, IG and Discord.

For some reason on all of my boxes I only get fruits around the edges of the cake. Literally zero growing from the center. It’s for sure 100% colonized and zero signs of contamination, not sure what it doesn’t like about the center of the cake.

@@edwardgrand I’ll have to try letting it dry out a little and see what happens. I’m growing inside a large fridge incubator I got from a college liquidation sale so I feel like I’m able to control the climate pretty well. I have the humidity set to 95% and I’m misting on occasion, I’ll sans the mister for a week or so and see what happens. Thanks.
