044 was the saw that got me into saws. An old logger friend was moving and gave me a blown up 044 for free to rebuild and that's where it all began for me
394 xp is a brutal machine. I have two. one is new to me and the other has done a lot of work and still works flawlessly. 394 is a monster of a machine
Great content tinman, I have an 044 I inherited when my father passed. I'll never get rid of it. That old saw has cut a many cord of firewood. Keep up the great work
It’s beautiful watching you cut those logs like butter, the 394 was impressive, but I got so much love and nostalgia for the 044. My logging buddy and mentor had a 044 magnum saw that he used to teach me and pass on knowledge about dangerous felling, fixing saws, milling planks without a milling jig. It’s like comparing classic cars and trucks, the best one is a personal and magical thing, and everyone has a different opinion. Thank you again for sharing the fun and inspiration
I have a 1991 034 that i ran wide open all day felling timber in Colorado , and never rebuilt and still running great. Those were great years for Stihl and Husky
I started logging with a beat up 562, crank shaft sheered off after a long list of other small things happened. Kept it as a back up saw. Went to the 575 and it wasn’t enough power for how much heavier it was and also had little issues with it. Got myself a 394 from 1997 and fell in LOVE. I use it every day now and will forever!
I grabbed one just last night for $160 at a local pawn shop. It needed a pull cord and handle, slight carb adjustment, and she started ripping up some White Oak like a hot knife through butter.
Both great saws! I need to find me another 394/395. I miss them and my 3120. That 394 of yours is beautiful!!! I love the 044 too! It makes me giggle every time I run mine!
lol, how nice. i had the prblem that on my cheap saw the blade was rattling up and down like crazy. i ground it out even more and made a pin pretty much exactly the same as you have on your husky. seems that was and is a pretty smart idea 🙂 now i got a 044 form 1989. it allmost my age. very nice beast, i love her.
Hey man! Great videos. So much good info, tips and entertainment. I'm picking up so much useful tips here and there from them all, and it's highly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and share with us. Hope you have a great weekend
Hey tinman, thanks for sharing the experience with these gerat saw's! The 044 drives me back to an time when i was in the woods with my father. Him and me and the ol stihl - great times. I still have that saw and I think i will take her to the woods again, now with my sons. Thanks!
Hey tinman love the content as always!! I also have a 394xp mine has a 395 top end as mine was wrecked when I got it. I absolutely love that saw pulls alot.
TimMan is right. The early 1990's was a good time for saws. I trust your opinion on this one @Bobby Scott The 044 was the lightest of this class of Stihl 4 class saws.
@@jamiedalluge9472 Yep, The 371 had little more power and the 044 was about 1/2 pound lighter. Old Stihl saws are like the gold of chainsaws. Kinda like CAT parts. They are painted gold because they coast more than gold.
The 044’s had that high rev...sharpened right they were super fast...just couldn’t let them get dull and push them under their power curve... I’ve always been a 371 guy but they definitely have a place of respect in my mind...like the 026... I was a 346- ported 350-353 guy but the 026 deserves it’s props too...
@@DaveyBlue32 Yep, They are all good saws. I really think it depends on the work you are doing. Are you cutting in steep mountains in soft wood all day. Or maybe in hardwood on flat ground. Most of the time I'm on very steep ground and in soft wood. But I do get time on hardwoods as well in WV on steep hills. When I can I pick the chain, bar, and powerhead for what I cutting that day.
Just a beautiful demonstration of two classics! While I am commenting, just curious if anyone else, like me, takes the rakers down a little lower than usual when noodling? 👍💪
Hi Tinman!!😀😀 The o44 is a fabulous saw . I used to log in the early 90s with a 044 . Those saws were so dependable. Day after day week after week month after month and you never had to do anything to them except blow them out once in a while and keep the air filter clean. Wish I still had those saws but I traded them off for 046 and then I went to the ms460. I really love the ms460 and will probably never need to ever get any different saws in the 75cc class. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al
If you haven't tried the 462c m yet, you definitely should. That saw has torque all over the RPM range. You can set it in the wood screaming and it hardly looses any revs. It just pulls and pulls and pulls
Both those saws are awesome, I hate wearing gloves as well, thanks for the videos I always look forward to them. I think I need a 394xp in my life ha ha., 😁
I have a 61 with a 24” bar. I love it. I bought it in 1992. Only problem with it was a broken carburetor gasket. I run a skip tooth chain with a little off the rakers. It loves the wood.
Both of them are great I personally on both on the other hand I’d have to argue that the 372XP is the best chainsaw ever made and the MS 200t is the best top handle ever made Just my opinion though
Tinman, You are a young buck compared to me, but no lie, I still remember about 10 years ago when I was 50, a 75 year old man who would come into our local small town breakfast joint, was limping a bit. He said he fell out of a tree while doing some trimming on his property. That guy lives life to the fullest.
@tinmanssaws I know this is an older video, but as an update on my last post, I wanted to wish you and your wife well after hearing that your daughter had to get her arm in a cast. I also wanted to say how as a novice saw operator who began with a Stihl 026 in 1994 as my only saw until roughly 5-7 years ago, I had always wanted an 044 and 066 to compliment it.
As I learned more about how saws are built and are supposed to operate optimally with good seals, tuned and sharpened right, etc. I now have knowledge I lacked from starting with a brand new saw. I learned about gummed up fuel systems to get my 026 running again, got a 2nd 026 then an 044 and a 660 back around 2017-2018. Now, my first Husky I mentioned yesterday, the 394. At a month shy of 60, I look forward to getting back into regular sawing as I seek to tidy up our trees that threaten our home, outbuildings and vehicles.
I picked up an abused 044 from a hunt club about a year ago. Had some stripped out bolt holes on recoil side that i retapped. Has some minor scoring on piston, but im not ready to tear it apart yet. Id enjoy seeing you get into tearing the 044 down and working on it, if you ever felt like doing a vid on that. Thanks!
We have tons of Stihl saws at work and I'm not a fan of any of them. I prefer using my own Husky's than a company saw. The 044 however is one of my favorite saws of all time. Thanks for sharing.
I've got the same bar, chain, and dogs on my 394. The saws are animals. I got the dogs with the replacement full wrap handlebar. The differences, my saw is BEAT UP. I bought it as such for a very good price. It came with a parts saw. The stock 7-pin sprocket was in tough shape, missing pieces and all. So bought an 8-pin for it. It still pulls, buried, with that 8-pin just as well as it did with the 7-pin. Your 394 seems to have the same chain speed that mine does with the 8-pin. That may be the difference between the 2095 and your 394.
I love my dump find 394, all use it for is spliting big wood just like you did in this video. I have put it in the alasken mill works well. but man when you start a 394 you feel it right ion the middle of the chest it just feels and sounds strong.
That 394 sounds like a beast I'm a stihl fan from Ohio Found your channel looking to modifying nitro engine been watching your channel for few months 👍
This weeks been alittle rought then others works kicked my ass an taken my lunch money haha. But It always amazing to come home an sit down an enjoy some tinman an the community
I have ran a lot of Stihls and Huskys. I really like Stihls 462, its an impressive saw. The 70cc size range of saw is where its at. Tinman, too old? Youre crazy man!
Other things that you can make an adapter out of; An old Starter Spring is partially hardened and already flat so its easy to bend the ends in and make an 'S' adapter. Also, an old piece of 3/8 metal fuel line cut in short pieces to fit over the bar studs will help 5/16 bar studs fit a 3/8 bar.
Nice arrangement on the t handles buddy looks good, love 044 want one bad, and obviously a 394..but I cant justify a 394 in foreseeable future but I'd hop on a good deal 044 busted so i could build it like i want and it b cheaper if its broke lol
026 with a 13 inch bar, 038 super with a 20 inch bar, and the trusted 044 with a 25 inch are my pride and joys, I have other saws but if I had to cut down to just 3 saws it would be those 3 I would grab first. I have newer stihls including a ms261 and ms460 to name a couple but the zero series saws from the late 80s/early 90s just run and run and run.
Myself I have numerous Sthill and husky saws. In my opinion the 046 is very noticeable more powerful than the 044. I've got the 044 12mm ms440 and ms441m tonic And I've got the 046, 460 and 461. I've ported all of them over time and in my case the 046 was slightly quicker than the others. The more annular design of the 461s transfers do use noticeably less fuel that the other 77cc saws. I am more of a Stihl fan but none of these will compete with my 395xp it's just too big. Now my 066 flat top is almost a dead match with my 395xp. The husky is slightly larger in displacement,3 or 4 cc I think.please dont attack me I'm not trying to knock any brand. Though I'm a stihl fan I am forced to accept the fact that the 395xp may be the greatest chainsaw ever made. I absolutely love your vids by the way.
The 94 typically runs better than the 95. I used to work on Amish saws. They usually liked Jonsered, but some of them liked the Huskies on the big stuff. A saw typically would last one to two years. Had one trade his 394 in on a 395. We caught hell for that one. My boss ended up taking the saw back, and finding him a NOS 394.
I've ran an o44 for 4 years now falling hardwood in ontario. In my opinion a port job on the saw with a 20 inch bar won't make the difference guys are looking for. If you want more speed put an 8 tooth drive sprocket on the girl and watch her chew. I've eaten lots of 461 stihls with mine. Dont believe me ask the ironhorse. Great video tinman!
Awesome video tinman! Any suggestions on adjusting the Walbro carbs with the limiter caps? Just rebuilt and 046 and have been sitting here listening to you tune that 044. I've got a tac, but I'm also still trying to get an ear for where it needs to be dialed in. Your videos have been a lot of help man!
Have a 044 it's an early 12mm as has the slanted fins on jug has a dual port can full wrap handle high flow airfilter and full clutch cover.372XP and 346XP
@Tinman's saws I picked up a stock 044. I have run many of them in the past but they where all the bosses muscle saw or a coworkers muscle saw. (AKA a old mans saw :-) good 50' up in the tree. What we call a "Princess" A backup in-case someone breaks their work saw. ) ....I'm a old man now. It was time :-) The 064/066 and 394, etc That's been the bread and butter.
I have been a Stihl guy for long time. Back in the day the Pro lines of of the 036, 044, 066 and 084's were the saws to run. Still think on the mid size saw the 044 of that day was the saw to run. Best all around might have been the 066.
More space on the 394 than the 044 and the shape of that rubber-guide in the back of the 044's sprocketcover seems to catch the chips. Same issue on the 026 and so on, cause generally they all share the same cover. The advantsge is, that you can easily upgrade to that "never-get-lost" screws by changing the chainbar-studs to the longer ones from e.g. new MS362 C-M and fitting the older(big) Cover from the MS261 (with that screws) but be aware: the new covers (witht that horizontal finns) do NOT fit!
Large Cotter Pin to the rescue! I love to pound the eye flat and use them in my Foredom with a little 1”x3” strips of emery to make a nice little flapper to polish up my port window’s... 😂👍. Bush league or Geter’ Done, Son! If it works it’s great in my book! Rock on!!!
Get you some chain mail gloves the way you're constantly mangling your hands! Just a tip from your favorite safety dique! That 394 is a friggin banshee!
What type of drill bit did you use to drill the holes in the bar? Maybe you could include drilling a bar in with your video when you make a bar adapter bracket from tubing.
Just pick up 044 with bad connecting rad and piston 50mm ,i like to put meteor piston but its only on 50mm i have option to go 52 but only highway what is better ??
Owned Jonereds ,, 2094 and 2 2095 ,, also a 2077 and 2083 .. 2095 , Husky 395,Like a lot of newer saws the Jonsered mufflers were restricted ,, Also rated the 066 Stihl with magnum muffler ,, Just my opinion :-) ,, They both sound crisp :-)
