I don’t do magic. Just an engineer watching this random video thinking critically. The fourth row of dominos fell much faster, that makes me think those blocks don’t have a bottom. So if there are holes dug underneath for somebody to go paint the numbers, there’s plenty of time to climb in, paint, and climb out. Simple like that. Also, video never revealed what the ground looks like under “404”.

That in a way is very close to the truth.

I would say it was quite close to that. He could have had like a 'move-the-squares' puzzle like arrangement on each of the dominos. He could then remotely control them spell out any set number, along with the other necessary words. He would have every single number that Penn&Teller could guess on the remote. Doable.

I can't understand how is this a trick. This becomes a trick only if I assume Jandro didn't open the envelope. I don't believe Jandro didn't open the envelope beforehand and why should they send him the envelope, they could have given it to P & T only.

@Sathish Yadav simple. 4 screens that show pictures of the 4 numbers. All he needed to do was to click a number on some device.

I think Penn was frustrated with Shawn the way he was frustrated with Kostya. He knew what both of them were going to do, but they are so good, he just couldn't follow them. With Jandro, he's just spectating and enjoying the performance, cause he knows he has no chance. 😂

Most tricks I know how they are done, even if I didn't/couldn't see it. This one though, the only thing I could guess would be something like an etch-a-sketch, but voice activated instead of the buttons. It's either that or he lied about the envelope, which I agree with Penn and don't think he did.

You mean you didn't see that domino up his sleeve? It's possible that the domino with numbers on it is actually a TV? And someone off camera sent it to the screen? Or he did say he didn't look inside the envelope, maybe someone else did tho.

It's possible this was filmed afterwards though. Because he only has two cameras (drone and cameraman) and this is a third view so must have been filmed out of sequence

My guess is his assistant looked. He only said "I didn't open the envelope". If the envelope was gimmicked with a slot, someone from P&T would've noticed. The color would be easy to gimmick so you could see the black ink through it in a certain light. That's my guess. I'm not a magician or an expert. And I do recognize most tricks require so much skill. I'm not sure if this was one of them. I also think sometimes it's in P&Ts beat interest to be "fooled". I think they end up working for or opening for P&T. They benefit financially if there is more hype around an act. It's a conflict of interest but I have seen them claim to be fooled with something you would expect them to understand.

There is always a behind-the-scenes magician to whom the method of the trick is revealed to (Michael Close in this case). Among other things, he's responsible for either busting out the magician when they lie, or to determine whether Penn's code words got misinterpreted by the guest. So no, Jandro did not open the envelope.

I would assume the show would do something against such a blatant and lame possibility. Like instead of mailing the letter, they send out a production assistant, who carries the letter and makes sure there are no shenanigans there or during filming.

This show goes to great lengths and is known for making sure the tricks are sincere, as presented. No planted audience members, no camera tricks and certainly no CGI. They had to do remote tricks because of covid, I imagine, but there is no reason to think they would just allow editing tricks now.

The video was recorded. He needed to know the number at the time to do "the magic trick" (whatever it is) and succeed.

You make a good point. But obviously it's not real magic. For a good illusion to work, there must always be a setup of some kind. Although I do think they were right about hiding people in four of the blocks. If you go back and watch again, from the areal view, after he calls out the number on the paper, it does look like there is odd movement in some of the blocks. I noticed it right away, but didn't even think about people being in there. In fact I wouldn't have thought of that all, if Penn had not mentioned it. It was only then that it clicked in my head. It was slight movement, but if you watch in high quality, it's noticeable.

Wild guess because of when it was shot, lockdown and special permit required to be outside messed with sitting schedules because timezones

Well, they got "mad". They're performers too, after all.

They want to be fooled. Kind of the point. They know so much about illusion and slight of hand etc, it’s probably kind of boring for them when they watch magic acts. If they are fooled? They know so much and if they don’t know? I bet it gives them some glee. They want to know how and they couldn’t figure it out. Maybe 10 minutes later they think “Oooowh” But on the spot? It’s cool to see them made humble and be funny about it.

If it's entire new creative trick, they'll be happy to get fooled. But if it's something familiar to them and get fooled 3 times, it's frustration. The feeling of you lose because of the last straw

If you want to look at it that way, all magic is a gimmick.

If it's a force, then it seems like the same gimmick, but it's crazy that no one's really figured it out yet. If it's not a force, then it's a completely different trick every time. Either way, it's impressive.

The use of drones and large props was over the top and I didn't care for it, but looking past that, how he got that number is the real puzzle. Assuming he didn't use "technology" to see through envelope or to write on the props after seeing the number, I'm just wondering how it was done.

@@hmoobdaj kind of a lame trick. So simple. Jandro can swear up and down that HE did not open the envelope beforehand, so he didn't know what P&T's number was that way. I think that is a hundred percent true that JANDRO did not open the envelope to learn the number ahead of time. But all that really needs to happen is that SOMEBODY ELSE opens the envelope for Jandro and tells him the answer and now he knows and can swear that he didn't open it beforehand!

Don't think it'd matter, the number was pre-supplied so the routine could be filmed in one go on a good day of weather for the camera shot.

@@roderickgrech9928 I'm not entirely sure how P&T are supposed to have had the number forced out of them, particularly off camera. If there were any question regarding the selection of the number, I reckon P&T would have been on it pretty hard in their decision. For what it's worth, I believe the height of the drone means we can't see tiny differences in the contrast of the characters. There is unusual spacing around characters suggesting that the blocks could indeed display any number provided at the start. I would have wanted to take a very close look at the blocks displaying the chosen number, as well as the cart he was driving, for e-ink and radio comms gear.

well, 404 was already on the blocks. Live would not work.

Timezone differences might prevent that.

There was that one guy who did film something like 2300+ times for his trick.

@@TheFolderOrigami you have to some degree assume there is a honor among magicians, that when they say they didn't do something so obvious they didn't do it. However, that does not deny that there are other ways he could have possibly gleaned the number, such as looking through the envelope with a strong light.

Likely they dampen their excitement when live to not add too much to the atmosphere, which goes out the window when they are alone.

Teller agrees with you. That’s what they said at the end. They didn’t make it a guess so I don’t know if it’s correct or not.

My take: "bigger" was always there, but the 124 started as just "1". I suspect he excavated beneath both number blocks and had assistants write the number on a piece of the block that was they slid up into place.

My high-tech theory . . . In each of the three blocks there was a roll of white paper with spools on the top and bottom of the block. The paper was stretched over the face of the block. The paper was pre printed with 0 through 9. The block also had a small motor, controller, and wifi receiver. When he opened the envelope an assistant sent a command to each block to tell it how far to advance each paper roll so the correct number was visible.

@@HappySmiley23 I have read your post and I have not previously ruled out (see above) that he used the "Copperfield" mechanical method. Back then, it was done with a pantograph like machine copying. Or he rolled up the paper (paper banner) on a plastic tube hidden in the frame of a drawing board with an electric motor. Today, a notebook, arduino and a servomotor are enough. Due to his own possibilities, the magician did not resort to sophisticated electronics, but to the solution described by you, which is cheap and electrically controlled (from above, you can recognize hidden electrical wires that lead to three boxes). Intentionally poor quality camera and height ensured that they would not see two slits ... You do not have to deal with the smiley, because the requirement was 3 numbers. However, we must not forget the fake switches that are directly required in this show (they are legal). If Penn said "people" instead of "kids" and the magician refused, we would be absolutely certain that he used a rewind banner method like Copperfield. In all likelihood, he did so, but it is also necessary to think about why Penn said "children," without the code, as if he knew something. Namely, Penn says without a code only those things that are absolutely not part of the trick. :) So we can't exclude adults. It would be very cheap and very reliable...

Name one of the ways he could have altered the blocks.

Having hundreds of ways makes it more likely the trick is going to fool them. The tricks that don't work are the ones that only have one way they could have been done.

I was able to find the answer myself by looking at the domino shadows: The sequences showing the dominos before the trick WERE FILMED AFTER THE TRICK! On the northern hemisphere, shadows are moving clockwise throughout the day. When you compare the shadows from the original shots to those from the trick, you can see a counter-clockwise change. That is a hard proof that the sequences were filmed after the trick and after putting the dominos back to an upright position. This also explains why some dominos (especially the three relevant ones) are not exactly upright. With all the cardboard involved, the risk of rain and humidity, wouldn't have allowed filming over two days. Also, filming took place at the second half of the day, because the shadows during the trick are shorter and have gotten longer when the opening sequences were filmed.

The show has a judge who knows the trick beforehand. Certain things are not allowed.

Look at the envelope at the beginning. You'll see how it's sealed with a big white sticker and there are two signatures across it's edges? If those signatures don't line up perfectly, it's evidence of tampering. There was none. Jandro didn't look in the envelope before hand.

And please don't forget, the producers know how the trick works beforehand and Jandro promised, that he did not get the info from the envelope. The producers would have called the whole thing off, if Jandro lied.

That's no fun, and too easy, he wouldn't do it. That's the first thing any idiot would think of.
