Well done for mentioning the 380gr Rhino projectile, most non African people don't know about it but make no mistake, it is a killer of note. I have even got some proprietary .375 400gr flat nosed solids that I'm trying to find load data for. I may start with the duplex load of Somchem powder as per 380gr Rhino's & start really low...anyways, great video, much respect from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼

About 30 years ago I acquired a .375 H&H for a proposed grizzly bear hunt. I loaded up some rounds with 300 gr. Nosler Partitions and never looked back. The rifle is a Remington 700 BDL Safari Grade, with a 2-7 power scope on top. I found the perceived recoil to be more manageable than my .300 Win Mag. My .300 is a fairly light rifle while the .375 is a bit hefty. Also, the recoil seems to come as a 'push' instead of a sudden 'hit'. I haven't made it to Africa yet but if (? when) the day comes, the .375 will be there. As John 'Pondoro' Taylor wrote of the .375, "Undoubtedly one of the deadliest weapons in existence". For hunting, especially in Africa, it truly is the greatest all around cartridge.

I have shot moose and bear with a Whitworth Express in 375 H&H. I found it extraordinarily accurate at 200 yards and devastatingly powerful as nothing gets very far after being hit. However, range firing will give you a headache and loosen teeth after three or four rounds! When your blood is up hunting, you don't notice the kick however. I really bought it in case I encountered a large grizzly which I never did although one checked around my tent one night while I was asleep and left a mind boggling size footprint behind.

Nice that the 9.3x62 Mauser was referenced as the motivation for the 375 H&H. WW2 and afterwords created a drought of 9.3 ammo. Since the 9.3x62 ammo was not produced in the USA. Add to this the availability of the Winchester model 70 in 375 with an American ammo source. Add reliable air travel to Africa and rich Americans going on safari. Nice the 9.3x62 gets credit. Terrific cartridge with less pain

1. Most people can shoot a 30-06 fairly good with very little training. Anything more than 30-06 people's ability to make good hits goes down. The 375H&H is a good bit more than 30-06. 2. In the USA, the popularity of the 45-70 makes reloading components in .458 more available at more reasonable cost over the 375. This is why many people (including myself) have opted for the 458WM or Lott. And you can easily download the 458 to the lesser Trapdoor loads and it is great on deer at reasonable ranges. It doesn't blow up a deer like a 300WM, 300Wetherby mag, 375 at full load..... 3. Where the 375H&H really shines is in Africa or Alaska or Canada or ...where you can be walking along hunting plains game or woods game and find yourself in need of a dangerous game rifle. A Zebra at 300 yards can be taken with 300WM, but a 375H&H is better. And my 458...It isn't really a longer range gun in my hands, 100 yards sure no problem, but in the field 300 yards....I "think" I can do it, but less recoil would be nice.

Excellent cartridge when developed, currently (2020, SEY) is just fine. The one drawback is the magnum length action required. They are made, but a bit more expensive than the standard length (.30-06 length), the medium (.308 length) or the small (.223 length). Of course they are available in double rifles. Even more expensive than a magnum length bolt gun. Recoil is surprisingly gentle. I shot one a long time ago and was amazed at how much it didn't kick. One would know when it was fired, but it didn't hurt until several shots had been fired. As a bit of trivia, the head size of the .375 Holland and Holland Magnum as mentioned is the 'father' and therefore the same size as all the rounds mentioned. And, it is the same size as the .303 British - which has a rim. I have no idea if that is but a happy coincidence, but H&H are in the U. K. where the .303 British is native. I have the recent updated cartridge and rifle. The 9.5x65mm round, known by it's maker as the .375 Ruger Magnum. The Ruger cartridge fits in a 'standard' length action. Which is convenient.

Reloaded some yesterday, test shot today. Awesomeness ensued - the first two shots, 50 meters offhand and 100m kneeling position went in the same hole 2cm left of the aiming point. No need to readjust the scope at all. Used 260gr Accubond and N140 powder. Goal was 800m/s, did not chrono yet, simulated with Quickload. The gun was a 1962 Sako Finnbear using Leupold fixed 3x scope with my favorite reticle, the german T style.

@Professor Waffle Sure the .308 is a more reasonably caliber i many ways, but first of all its not legal too hunt DG i Africa in most parts with something smaller than the .375 H&H so if you want one rifle that can do it all around the globe the .375 H&H it is. If I just look too the hunting in Sweden there is no other caliber that has taken down more Moose than our 6.5X55 in the Sweden forest. So i guess everything comes down too what ju want too do with your rifle of choice, but if I wasn't going too choose the .375 H&H i probably would have chosen the .30-06.
@davidjohansson2282
@davidjohansson2282 5 лет назад
@Professor Waffle Well the use of firearms for defence is strictly illegal in Sweden, if you ever use your firearms in such way you will loose your permission to own firearms and will be in jail for a couple of years depending on the situation. Here in Sweden we use our firearms for hunting, sporting or target-shooting, so I am talking about the .375 H&H strictly as a hunting caliber because that's what its ment for.

I first encountered this when visiting militaria forums years ago, and I put it down to non-gun people getting confused, like when they call a magazine a 'clip'. I have to say I was pretty surprised to hear someone who actually works in a gun shop calling bullets 'heads'.

The reason the cartridge cas ehad to be made the size it is, is due t the cordite Britain used at that time, like long strings of noodles; to get the performance H&H was looking for, it needed to be able to pack enough cordite into the shell, hence the size and the size of many of the famous shells the British gunmakers put out.

I know there a very few but can these be had in semiautomatic format for those who screwed their shoulders up making bolt-actions and single-shots non-options? I know Magnum Research has .458 available in their BFRs and a .375 round, not H&H as well, I'm sure having them custom-making a BFR in .375 H&H could be done though

You could also try installing a thick premium recoil pad (e.g. Pachmayr) on a non-auto rifle with the stock cut shorter than you usually would so you can add a slip-on pad on top of that one. If you know the size of the pads beforehand you get the additional bonus of having the stock set to your ideal length. Slip-ons also increase the surface area of the buttstock which helps too. A shooting vest, a suppressor or a muzzle brake could round it off nicely.

To all, my 375 is a Winchester 70 Safari Express with scope, weighs a ton compared to my wife's 30-06/20" Steyr Mountain Rifle with the scope. For plinking at the moment, I use some 275g 375 rounds but have ran DG Norma, Federal, and Hornady through it and they're not brutal at all. Their boxes all list them as DG level ammo, again, the recoil is not too bad. My wife's choice of ammo for the '06 is either 165 or 180's, that rifle kicks! Also, her Steyr has an adjustable LOP, set for her. My 375's stock fits me and helps to reduce the "felt" recoil. When I said that my 375 didn't seem to kick as bad as it probably could, I was talking about "my" 375. If you own a 375 that hurts to shoot, there are ways to lesson your recoil. As for my M70, she's heavier than I'd like but, from everyone's comments, a dream to shoot. FYI, my favorite deer rifle is one of my other M70's, a Featherweight in 257 Roberts. If you guys ever want to talk about a caliber with hardly any recoil, that's the 257 Roberts. Take care and be safe!

We never lost our gun rights, guns are a privilege not a right. We can own anything we want, we just need a reason and to be of sound mind which seems to make sense? Our gun culture and historical relations with guns are just extremely different brother.

1908 350 Rigby magnum took on the 9.3x62 (Otto Bock Berlin 1904 ). The Rigby was better. 1922 369 Purdey ; was almost a 375 h&h. 1920 Brenneke developed the 9.3x64 for the standard Mauser action and it was on paper the equivalent of the 375. In practice, however the 9.3x64 is an unpleasant rifle to shoot and is not popular even in Germany. My German gunsmith advised me to stay clear of it despite my having used a DBBL over and under 458 win mag with the original 1959 loads for over 50 years. I still use my 1914 375 h&h today and now have a CZ 375 h&h. There is no need for another calibre with modern bullets and loads.

350 Rigby needs a magnum action + it is obsolete now + 9mm bullets are very rare. 9,3x62 is more alive than ever and is also capable of being built in standard sizes actions (both for bolt action and auto loading hunting rifles) moreover there is a big variety of .366 bullets/9,3mm on the marked. So why do you think 350 Rigby is better? It is not true that 9,3x64 is in generell uncomfortable to shoot. This may be the case if you shoot it from a light Rifle but even then its recoil is less than the recoil of a .375 HH rifle shot from a rifle having the same weight as the 9,3x64 rifle. I used to have a Mauser 66 in 9,3x64 with a safari barrel which had even less recoil than a standard weight Mauser 98 in 9,3x62 with a standard weight barrel.

@@DerWaffennarr there is nothing wrong with a magnum 98 action ! Rigby had superb bullets for the 350 magnum and its penetration was excellent. The 9.3x 62 otto bock was the standard against which medium calibre rifles were measured. Many fine rounds have been discontinued not because they were better or worse but because big game hunting changed . Economy is a driving force. The 9.3x64 was a decent rifle and took advantage of its 338 calibre to improve sd. but then you might use a 338 lapua to better effect ! Although the 375 has a higher ME than the 300 win mag, it is a more comfortable rifle to shoot. I can only tell you what my gun smith in germany said about the X 64 . Indeed a split 9.3x 64 case is a problem specially in a Mauser 66. The conical case of the 375 easily extracts ( happened to me with eley kynoch). I have a Mauser 66 in 7x57 and it is accurate with its hair trigger (stecher), however it has a terrible normal trigger. Modern loads for the 375 have by far superseded the 9.3 s. The hornady 250gr the Norma 350gr the Brenneke TOG 270 gr the 270 double tap , are but a few of the newer loads which have left the x64 behind. Nobody buys a 9.3x 64 today for Africa !

The 375HH as a minimum for dangerous game is a well known myth. Most countries state the 9.3mm (.366) as minimum.
