We stopped by the Kelford Cams booth at the 2023 PRI Show and took a look at a the 8-second EMS Mustang after we realised it used a 4 cylinder Ecoboost!

@@JessieRingleyquestion? I think this is a really unique build and I’m sure that everyone else agrees but from what I’m hearing so far it seems as if the ford 4cylinder engine block is very fragile. You had to switch to another company’s engine block just to start seeing the power gains that you expected. What is the most hp and torque that the stock block in the 2.3 ecoboost could handle before it starts to have major engine failure?

@@kingzuna8007 we want 8.77 on a sleeved and welded 2.3 block, but using the MZR block with sleeves is the best way. FWIW, the MZR block is stamped fomoco on the side.

So cool he's gone back to those Mazda MPS (Mazdaspeed) blocks to get reliability which have been around for 18years. Cool to see an underated platform living on.

Mazda use compacted iron graphite (CIG) engine blocks that provides strengths multiple times greater than standard cast iron Ford block. I was unaware of the Landrover head even being an option for this motor? Can't wait to see it in its final form! Listening to this guy speak makes me think that he should have been a rotary guy? 🤔

I got a 2017 eco boost turbo mustang. I'm in love with the power this thing puts out. I definitely will be upgrading. These cars are fun for a small motor. 💪🏾

I got a 2015 EcoBoost 2 head gaskets later 40,000 MI to rod bearings later, I finally got into the 11s 8 is impressive bro

Put an Australian ford barra in it next time... you'll get 2000hp on cast block and 3500hp on billet block with a lot more torque per hp

The ecoboost and MZR share the same architecture it’s the blocks are different alloys. ford and Mazda had a partnership when these engines where developed.

So many iconic 16 valve 2 liter engines out there, not a V8 fan but no denying the power they give, but something special turning the boost alway the way up on 4 cylinder.. plus ford have wicked history of boosted 4 cylinder engines. Very informative, thank u. 😎👊👍✌👌

4:29 - saw your car on the floor at PRI (visited it all 3 days) and yeah it sounds like you're overdue for going billet... 🤙😎 love boosted JDM 4's as well so was looking to tread the same path albeit with a 4-cyl Camaro (wanted the Alpha chassis to run NJMP as well as at Cecil and MIR) but got a good deal on a used LT1 so ended up with a V8 like everybody and their Grandma. admittedly in hindsight it has been good on my time, my wallet (and my marriage). since i'm not chasing big power, it's kept me out of the garage from having to work on it 24/7.

Why not run a mzr head ? You can port it to hell and back to get the flow you want and they are pretty stout. You do run into port velocity problems on the exhaust side but they do make valve and guide combos to mitigate the issue. The mazda heads are pretty cheap too . I have 3 good mzr heads sitting around.

Yes the Ecoboost 4 cylinder is just a further evolution of the Mazda MZR engine.

Why not just use the Mazda head than too. If you have that much problems with everything that ford built, may as well get rid of it all. The Mazda will flow better anyway.

Because the Mazda head uses goofy injectors with a prehistoric seal design that always ends up leaking at some point. The HPFP is also driven on the opposite cam which means the control strategy changes. The intake ports are a burden to port well because each valve has its own port and both of the ports per cylinder are not even close to being identical. The exhaust side isn't that great either, the ports are mirrored like a 2JZ-GTE head and the outside ports are dogleg shaped which sucks for flow. Oh and there isn't variable cam timing on the exhaust, which can make it harder to get the car on the stall.

@@ayoustin6077 it’s better than the ford head though. So I don’t understand what your whole point was about. Either way the 2.3 Mazda motor flows air better and doesn’t split in half. He has problems porting the head he has now because of the coolant passages and the heads eventually cracking. I do t see how it’s a worse option.
