The shaft of the gear selection pawl needs to be cleaned up before putting the switch back on, which is well documented elsewhere, but here's how to get the alignment correct while installing the switch with the transmission in Park.
My reverse lights stopped working, I already looked at the fuses and everything is fine, I tested it with a volt meter and found out that I’m not getting power to my reverse lights and now I’m thinking it’s the neutral safety switch. Any insight on that?
@@Boyder102 I don’t even have that truck anymore.. but all of a sudden it started working again so I never really figured it out. If you really need some light just wire light pods to the back with a switch in the truck.
Thanks man, really appreciate you replying. Stock lights have to work for inspection. I changed the neutral switch today but still don’t get power to the back. Idk, bought to pay someone to chase it
Depending on how it's misaligned, the vehicle may not go into park and roll when the column shift indicates 'park' or the interlocks may not work properly so that you can start the vehicle in drive but not in neutral, etc.
The ECU controls the various transmission solenoids and pressure application. If it's getting mixed or incorrect signals, it's difficult to say what the ECU will do with transmission control. Depending on the model year, you may get a "Check Engine" light or you might get a transmission-error message on a functional display. I.e. the alignment is important, but I don't know what the ECU and transmission will do, and I'm not sure that you're going to be able to find a reliable answer to the question because the behaviour would vary with the degree of misalignment. If it was so bad that the switch said the trans was in Park when it was actually in Reverse, I imagine that wouldn't be too healthy for the trans.
Lies I just put in a used 4l60e transfered my original switch didn't align it because I didn't know that they have to be aligned it only bolts on one way and the gear arm only goes one way back and fourth... My truck is jacked up in the rear and when I put it in reverse it last 3 seconds tires spin then stop .. new fluid new filter.. I was told that these switches nothing to do with how the transmission actually goes into gear.. but clearly it must ?? So my faulty or unaligned shifter switch could be the cause why my transmission won't go into gear because it's not getting ground or bad connection?? Weird how this lil peace plays a huge delicate roll.
This should be titled how not to install your switch. If you look closely there is an index mark on the outside and the inside. When you align those two marks the switch is in the neutral position. NOT the marks this guy is using. The transmission should also be in NEUTRAL, not park like this guy.
Actually, the shaft and switch are keyed, so when installing the switch on the shaft, it literally doesn't matter what gear the trans is in when installing the switch, so long as you don't rotate the shaft inside the switch. In the video, at 1:02 you can see that the switch is installed with the alignment marks set and the switch keyed on the shift shaft and the front hole of the mounting bracket is aligned with the boss on the transmission. I bolted it up like this, installed it in my pickup and it worked perfectly. No adjustment needed. It's an easier method than the GM manual calls for with the special J 41364-A tool. Also, at 0:16, you can literally see me pointing to the alignment marks on the switch, showing them aligned, so I'm not sure what index marks you're talking about that you seem to think I got wrong.
instructions show using the alignment tool. It didn't go on very easily but it did go finally. :-( it was not in Park. I took it off and figured out that the tool doesn't work. You're showing me the tiny mark, which I should have used. Now the center is stripped and it won't stay adjusted. Now What?
Well, I'm 2 years late to replying to this one, somehow. I'd probably pick one out from a pick-n-pull for a few bucks. From the sounds of it, the keyway on the switch is destroyed so your alignment is difficult to set and hard to hold. Probably not worth the effort, but if you can get the alignment right, I'd have gone with RTV on the shift shaft.
Dude this has nothing to do with putting transmission into gear! Nor does aligning it my truck goes info reverse for 3 seconds then stops jacked up i just put in a used transmission new filter new fluid was told the transmission shifted good when tested.. however i put my original switch on because it didn't come with one.. so you're saying that this petty lil switch tell the computer to tell the shift solenoid to go into gear.. truck starts even if you don't have this so that's a lie... Someone please explain because if that's the case why would you have to alight that is not a sensor
Dude, your non-working "used but good" transmission that isn't working probably has less of a problem with my accurate comments than the promises made to you by the seller of your replacement trans. You can call me a liar all day long, but that's not going to fix your transmission, or make any of what I said inaccurate.
You got hosed on your "good" 60E. I've been building them for years and the pressure switch manifold tells the TCM what gear its in, so it can control shifting.
