BOYLE HEIGHTS - A 62-year-old motorist was killed today when his sport utility vehicle struck a stalled car on the Golden State (5) Freeway near Boyle Heights.
The crash on the southbound freeway, south of Mission Road, was reported at 1:14 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of a 1998 Honda Accord, going southbound in the number lane, tried to avoid a crash with an unidentified vehicle that had entered the same lane. The driver of the Honda, a 22-year-old woman, lost control of the car, spinning out and coming to a rest facing the wrong way in the number two lane, according to the CHP.
The driver of a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, also traveling southbound at an undetermined speed in the number two lane, was unable to avoid the Honda and the two vehicle collided in a head-on crash, the CHP reported.
The SUV driver died at the scene. The Honda driver suffered major injuries and was taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.
As a result of the initial crash, a second collision occurred when a taxi cab and a heavy duty commercial vehicle crashed into each other -- in an attempt to avoid the initial crash, the CHP reported.
The heavy duty commercial vehicle struck a guardrail and jackknifed, blocking the transition road from the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway to the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway. It was unclear if anyone was injured in that crash.
All southbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway were reopened about 4:55 a.m.
