I like your plan. I retired at 60 ten years ago, and I'm content. 60 is good especially for you because you have so much fun things to do, and you want to do them and enjoy doing them while you can still move around. :) One thing of course, and you know this, don't go too much into debt in your golden years. I wish you the best, and a Butler building also sounds great as well.

HI MIKE…SOUTHERN INDIANA HERE..wet today. Rainy and snowy. Probably coming your way. Excited about seeing your buildings. When I left the country, I left behind a 45x75 barn. Even had an archery range in it. It was heated and cooled with a small bedroom with a nice little bathroom. Well, now, here I am living the “city slicker” life. 😭😭

One more thing, the wood you make on your saw mill is worth alot... curing it is very important... Here a ton of folks have 40 foot shipping containers for kilns, or simple secure storage... I built a kiln for a guy with a small wood stove at the end and block walls... Circulation fans to blow hot air in and bring back the cool air.... This was for drying firewood to sell... Gut built a bunch of trailers that held two cord and backed them into the conex... Wood would be dry in like two days.... No stacking, no storing the wood... conveyer into the trailers and then the trailers were picked up by the tractor and dumped into his dump trailer... Great system and he put out alot of wood fast...

Love the video! Definitely build what you want with your building. I made the mistake on just putting up a building in a hurry. Now I am in the process of building a bigger building to suite my needs. Keep up the good work!

My brother had a small pole building put up in Ohio by the Amish from Indiana and they did a great job putting up the shell. He then finished it from there. You are close to many Amish communities in eastern Ohio who might do you a great job.

Your building ideas are sound and seem to fit you to a tee. If you looked for a new property, you'd be comparing to what you have already which is hard to beat. As you get older, you may want to forecast if your lifestyle would change somewhat from the current full load you now have on your plate. Kids grow up and go away. It's hard to forecast the future but flexibility in buildings is usually a good design factor. The multipurpose concept is something to think about when you build. Keep up the good work, enjoy watching your videos. so much of what you do is portable, the conveyor, the skidder, the splitter and the mobility you need to do all this. The idea of not getting too specific when you build has some benefits, and I totally agree about the big loans and all that entails.

Many good shed companies have a layout calculator that allows you to place all the equipment into a shed and that helps you pick out the right size. Good luck with the shed , exciting times. Been buying wood with my paychecks to build a 30 foot addition to my shed.

Mike, the possibility with buildings are endless. On a farm a large and tall pole building is a must to get expensive seasonal equipment like combines and planters in out of the elements and have spaces to work on that large equipment. For you, if you want to put all your implements in out of the weather, I would put up several 4-door garage like buildings with just enough space to back your implements and tractors into them. Keep some separation between them so if one building catches on fire the whole works doesn't go up in flame. And don't forget to run some water out to or near these buildings as water is always handy to have around, especially if you intend to pressure wash implements before tucking them away in their allocated slots. The sawmill building is the only one I'd put a concrete slab under. I saw a RU-vidr named Bus Huxley put up what I thought was a great sawmill building. What ever you choose to do, I'm sure you'll enjoy building them and will get good use out of them.

Hi Mike, this suggestion is not economical up front but is in the long run and however you value your time. I used Morton Buildings for a 24x36 barn. Their knowledge is great, they provide plans for the town permits, they make and drop the materials and put it up quickly depending on the weather. I liked that it was maintenance free building. I recommend meeting with their sales reps and they'll get you thinking about a lot of details and processes. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Mike here, I work on overhead doors for a living. I have been in the industry for more than 20 years. I work for a company located in Beaver County. I get up to your neck of the woods occasionally for work. What ever you do, keep the sawmill in it's own location isolated from the rest of your equipment. I have worked on doors in many saw shops and literally everything is covered in sawdust. Go big with the building so you don't have builders remorse. Hey Mike, Good morning. When I retired I wanted to build a pole barn to store a couple collector cars I have and to house a vehicle lift for any restorations that I wanted to do in retirement. I went through the planning process and laid everything out and even scaled the cars and equipment. All is good to go right? well the building went up and my 36x40 man space was done. It took about 3 weeks of moving the storage cabinets in and the lift, tool boxes, ancillary equipment to work on everything, welders, plasma cutter, band saw, metal break...well you get the idea. The barn was pretty full and I had only moved one vehicle in. So I guess my only advice is to plan to the best of your ability and then factor it up by 1.5. lol Good luck as you move forward I'll be watching to see your progress. Hi Mike, The best advice for what size and type of building is to visit a bunch of them. What you think you want, might change after looking a a few of them. Take lots of pictures for reference and comparing. Visit some of the building companies also, as they might have ideas as well as some reference photos.

Hi Mike:, Have you looked into log arch trailers? For moving saw logs from the woods to your work area .They would hook on to the Wallenstein wench trailer hitching point. The logs comes back when you do. Some thing a little bigger then an ATV log-arch. to accommodate bigger saw logs. They Come back with fairly clean less blade ware. no gravel in the bark. See if you can demo one. just to see if you would like it. be able to pull a log back with any one of your pieces equipment, including the ranger. just a thought. I like all the videos your family do. so I hit the like button ,in the first commercial . keep up the great work see ya next time.

The classic sawmill buildings were temporary structures because with horse or early crawler logging it was more efficient to move the mill than have a long log haul. You have a mill and all the timber you will ever need , build a semi rustic building on a side hill so logs can be rolled on and waste continue down hill. It is nice if you can run electric to the mill. Situate the mill so in the winter you get the sun that will be blocked by leaves in the summer.

I am with you all the way. I have been planning a garage/barn for 2 years now. I need storage for a truck camper, my L3200 Kubota, implements, dump trailer and 2 ATVs. Been flipping back and forth between the aesthetics of post and beam construction and economics of pole barn construction, insulation or no insulation or partial insulation ect. . I am looking forward to seeing what you decide on and how it works out for your needs. I knew this was coming sooner or later and I am glad it is now for you and also for me. Thanks.

I have a ms260 pro, and if I ever wear it out I'll absolutely be getting a ms261. These are perfect firewood saws unless you are constantly cutting very large wood. You definitely need a building to protect all that awesome equipment. Smart man planning it out, do it once, do it right

I have a very similar situation as you. I had a pole building built that is 40 x 60 and only 3 sides. The front is all open to house my tractors, trailers and equipment - and also hay that I produce from our property. I also have a skid steer with LOTS of attachments and the goal was to get everything out of the weather just so it would last longer. I also have a 40 x 80 shop that I have a machine shop in half and wood shop in the other half. My advise is to build it BIGGER than you think you need! You will be adding to your equipment - trust me!! I would suggest you hire someone to build your pole building. Mine went up in a week. It would have taken me months to get it done with having a full time job. Good luck with what ever you decide. Fairly new sub here from eastern Washington State and enjoy what you do! Thank you!!

Glad your putting up some buildings. It would drive me nuts having all that equipment sitting outside. For the sawmill building I would do the 3 sided building with the back wall facing the west to block wind. You will need to come up with a way to get the sawdust out. Conveyor or dust collector.

You know there is a lot to be said about milling your own lumber for your shed. There are a lot of YT videos about building with green lumber, rough estimate savings of $10K or more in lumber alone. Great video Mike can't wait to see what you decide. Thumbs up.

So exciting, nothing more exciting than planning for a new build. take the time and sketch out the layout and the exterior approaches would be my suggestion - so you have doors and access exactly where you need. And think about the timber flow process for you mill shed - I speak from experience, have moved the cladding on our shed about three times now :)

It sounds like you have a well layer plan , on the building good job.

For my shop I poured my slab floor the size that I wanted and built a pole barn structure with a truss roof around the slab. That way I had the full use of the entire concrete slab floor. I had the trusses custom built with attic space so I was able to have storage space the size of the slab floor also. I then built a normal stud wall at both gable ends to finish them for my entry door & garage door and windows at the opposite end. I then wrapped the entire structure with exterior plywood and covered with metal siding. It’s been standing for 14 years with no problems.

A builder told me about 40 years ago that when you build a new building, think about the size you think you need, double it and then add 10% you might have enough space. I have always tried to followed this advise when building a new building and it has served me well.

Mike, I would build the saw mill building like your talking about and just keep it for the wood products (air drying lumber etc.) and mill and think about being able to add onto it later. I would keep the farm implements and everything else in the other shop. The reason is the dust from the sawing process, especially the oak, will deteriorate the paint and finish on all your attachments. Even if you blow the dust off after ever sawing operation, every time the wind blows that very fine dust will get airborne and land on all your attachments and can do damage to the finish. On the big shop figure what size you think you need, then add 20% you can never have enough shop space, I'm going through that very thing now.

I’ve got a 40x60 pole building and it filled up fast. Now I am thinking about building shed roofs off each side 12x60. I am currently storing 6 cords inside the pole building so I am really looking forward to getting it out under the shed roof. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you don’t sell yourself short on square footage.

A man who has set up several sawmills told me his best idea was to put the mill as high as possible, getting logs to the saw bed is never a problem, getting sawdust, slabs and boards away from the mill is the issue. I know setting your mill 20-30 feet high inside a building is not feasible but it is a great idea.

Mike...I feel your pain buddy.....We're researching a large shop building...cost is gonna be EXPENSIVE!!! We've got a blank slate here on our farm to plan...but like you said...planning for the future...for ease of access and location!

Pole building are cheep and easy, fast to build... Get the roof on, the walls, three quarter minus stone for the floor and add concrete later.... shed roof off the sides for attachments, wood and tractors... Main thing is to get everything inside... I bought two old 26 foot uhaul trucks and took the box van off the back and built a garage between them... tractors fit right in them... b7100, and The l275... kubota.... 3 wheelers, 4wheelers, sleds, all inside.... Room in the middle for welding and repairs....

Just some thoughts on the building... if you have the mill there, you need room for your mill, room for maneuvering logs onto the deck, and taking boards/flitches off. You will also need room to allow your lumber to dry (stickered and stacked) and you might have several stacks going at the same time.... some 2by material some 1by boards, and maybe different lengths any/or drying times. Then when they are dry enough, you need an area where you can store them till you use them. How about a staging area where you want to drop the logs off and prep them for milling and/or skin them or clean the mud and rocks out.... My boss (aka my wife) was the one who made me enlarge my mill shed twice to 40x88...... and she was soooooo correct. You can _never_ have too much barn space and a millshed really sucks it up fast! Good luck on your plans moving forward. Looks like you have lots of opportunities to consult people for good advice.

I have to chime in with the others - make it bigger than what you think you need. When we put up our barn at our hunting property we increased it by about 50% of the original plan and ended up 36x72x14. Wish we would have gone bigger. Luckily we will be able to expand the length when push comes to shove and more toys require shelter.

Take a look at the metal truss pole barns. Quick, easy, affordable and look nice. 32'x48'x14'high ran about $14,000 with 8x8 posts, tin roof and gable end trim. Concrete floor was extra of course.

Mike I remember a place in Butler that puts up pole barns, garages, etc...but that was back in the 70s I wish I could remember the name of the company. Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad used this company to build out building.n Whatever your endeavors are at this station in life the finishing line seems to be in reach then at some point your cross it and wander where the time went. My 2 cents. 36X40 with awnings on both sides. Sliding style barn doors on the sides for the mill. Morton Buildings in Gettysburg has some nice building options.

Mike really like all your videos. Noticed when you were cutting logs about 5:16 to 6:00 in this video that's prime kickback hazard when cutting a log laying against another. If I am cutting in a situation like that its a good idea to make sure to keep your head to the side of the the bar so that if it should kick back it would go past your head. Best from New York

I'm thinking about redoing an old 028 AV. My grandpa used it for years and gave it to my dad just before he passed away back in 2006. I've used it a few times, but it needs a new clutch, sprocket, bar, and chain. It also needs a re-tune.

Mike, I had a 24x36 building built by polebarnsdirect.com out of Akron. Very reasonable price and they came down here in WV to build it. Construction was excellent building is spot on plumb and square. To top it all off from start to finish they handed me the keys to the building in 11 1/2 hours !!!!

Mike you got good idea and it's always wise sit down and think about it and get you some paperwork set the write all that down but I always stay in your budget and try to add another 10% too you building and at the end you know you done right

Your always going to fill whatever you build, so bigger is better, might want to put your firewood splitter under a roof when the weather is bad ect. I know most of my implements are frozen in already (cement is always nice) well now that I’ve spent all Your money🤓 have at it!

I have big yard like yours and extra large two car garage on house . Separate large heated shop 33x 30 feet . It’s never enough . Now I need a separate building just for attachments . Never ends 😂 Go big with a nice side leaner building for your attachments and saw . 👍

Mike, I think you have the right line of thinking as well, get somebody in there to put the top/roof portion, get the equipment under some cover, and then you can "peck" away at the rest. I'm the same way, i hate leaving my tractor and implements setting out in winter weather. In fact I changed my garage door so i can get my tractor in without putting the ROPS down.

The rk55 is enough to build your own building. You can stand the walls and set trusses with the tractor. My wife, dad, and me just put up a 40x48 with 16ft walls for half what I could get someone to build it.

i know it's a tough decision on how big to go... a buddy of mine years ago had the same problem, he built a 40x60 pole barn and then a few years later added 20 feet to the end of it.. and now just a year or so ago added another 20 feet for an enclosed area (no door stone floor) for his rv, car and utility trailers.. he had the land and just took his time and did what he could afford and added as he went..
