Trying veggie burgers at Mos Burger, a Japanese fast food chain.
As well as their regular menu, Mos Burger has a whole range of soy patty burgers that you can have with different toppings. I tried the teriyaki burger, fries and milkshake. There is some confusion about whether it's 100% vegetarian (explanation at the end of the video) and according to your dietary choices you might not want to eat it - I'll leave that up to you :-) Here's the allergen info from the restaurant (in Japanese) www.mos.jp/menu/pdf/allergy.pdf
Mos Burger has branches all around Japan - just search on Google Maps to find the nearest branch. It's my favourite of the Japanese fast food brands.

Thank you for this! I was berated on a Facebook vegan forum for eating the Mos veggie soy burger. You explained it well - it seems it's the toppings that have the meat ingredients. And I'm like you; if it's cooked on the same pan, so be it. No animals were harmed for my personal consumption, and I'll accept that having a whole separate grill is unrealistic in Japan. Some day, I hope! Thanks again!

That's my attitude too - you have to be realistic, especially when options are limited. I don't know why some people get so tense about special diets - everyone just eat whatever you want to eat - and if you don't want to eat it, don't! :-)

The Happy Cow app was a lifesaver for me during my trip to Japan. There was so many vegan/veggie options,that I want expecting.

I'm heading over to Japan next year and these videos are super helpful! I've been plant based for over 5 years now so I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting veggie food in Japan! I'll probably have a few slip ups, but that's fine.

Thank you. This is very informative and answered the question I had always wanted to know about "veggie" burgers. They cook vigge patties on the same grill where they cook their regular meat counterpart, and I DO MIND that. Here in Canada, some fast food places started serving "veggie" burgers, but they, too, cook veggie patties on their meat cooking grills etc. I always enjoy your vlogs - always informative and insightful and witty!

Thanks! I think the only way to be sure is to go to a 100% vegan or vegetarian restaurant - which do exist too! (I’m just always travelling with meat eaters which makes it more tricky!)

@@cakeswithfaces True. It is rather challenging to be a vegetarian/vegan in Japan. At some convenient stores, they have onigiris with gelatin in the rice (to make it glossy)!

It’s the sauce that contains animal-derived ingredients/animal fat and flavorings, but if you want something other than just the plain burger or cheeseburger, you can ask for them to hold the sauce. I prefer a bit of veggies on my burger, so I usually get the Mos Yasai and ask for no sauce. :)

Great video! We loved MOS Burger so much. We had the riceburger and also made a video about it on our channel. We wished we would have tasted more different burgers at Mos.

Thanks for this video! I had no idea about the lettuce substitute for bun! I'm not vegan, I'm the opposite, I'm low carb and keto, so the lettuce bun thing makes me happy! Good to know! We used to have Mos Burger in Hawaii but it closed down a long time ago. :(

Hey there, for the mos cheese burgers, does the tomato chili sauce thing have any meat in it? Or is it a straight tomato sauce with cheese and the soy patty? Thanks for all the great info!

If like me you dont like sauces on burgers such as mayo, will they make the burger without it? Ive tried asking for food without certain ingredients before and they always make such a big deal about it lol

I know what you mean - sometimes it’s tricky when I ask them to make a menu item vegetarian & make it without the meat. I’d learn the Japanese word for “without” & do a cross symbol with your arms or hands.

I had a real burger at Mos Burger and both my friend and I thought it was only OK. of course I ordered what I thought was cheese and it turned out to be a plain burger with a huge glop of mayo on it. The one I went to did not have an English menu so I was going by the picture.

NOOOOO!!!!!!! Mos soy burger is not vegetarian. Please ask them to print a list of ingredients for you.

I've heard a lot of people say that; obviously only eat what you feel comfortable with, but from the allergen info from Mos Burger, it looks like it's only the toppings that contain chicken; the soy patty hamburger and cheeseburger do not contain chicken. However they are produced in the same facility and cooked in the same oil as meat products so you may wish to avoid them for that reason.
