You not only have to worry about Colic, with them still heaving after a run, but you also have to worry about Choke as well because you've restricted their water. Keep this in mind please if it happens again. Your friend Jenn. PS Having worked at multiple racetracks, for both flat and Standardbreds horses, after a race, when they are breathing heavy, we allow 5 sips of water,and remove all water from their stall. We then, every 15 minutes allow them another 5 sips of water. Between first and second offering of water, we are, hosing them off, scraping them off. Then another second sip is offered, then we do legs,and then they are walked, with water offered every 15 mins., we then stall them with hay only for 1 hour. Still offering water every 15 mins. After that, we grain them, put water with electrolytes in their stall, usually 2 buckets, stay another hour to monitor for signs of any issues like Colic or Choke, and after that hour of monitoring and nothing is going on, we go home. And before anyone jumps down my neck about racing, EVERY owner I worked for, never raced a horse before its natural 3rd birthday, and at that point they had been worked lightly as a 2yr old when they had been backed for the first time.

Wow thats nuts! Horses are so hard
@jenniferlehman2464
@jenniferlehman2464 3 года назад
@@DayByDayVlogs Yes. They are. So, not to put Gabby down here, but what she did was incorrect. After catching them, the uninjured ones should have been walked. Finn should have had his leg hosed down and taken care of. After he stopped breathing heavily, they could have been put in their stalls then with a tiny amount of hay. When giving horses water after a hard workout or when they've run around crazy and across the road, hold the bucket and watch where you put the throat latch. You can literally see them swallowing. 5 or 6 swallows only if they are like they were. It's ok Laura, every day is a new day of learning when you have horses. I'm 54 yrs old and would love another 54 to learn even more!! Keep your mind open to learning and the world is yours, close your mind to learning, and you remain living in cave. Meaning never say you know "everything there is to know about horses or what ever subject", because you never will. We are all learning. As each horse is different, as each human is different. All my best, Jenn.

They can drink water they just CAN NOT EAT straight after work. Especially after seeing Finn breathing like that you should wait 15 minutes after work and you should not fed them until at least half an hour later. I would of turned them out in your school to calm down

Bruh gabby needs to do some research, I’m shocked their horses didn’t colic. Giving your horses food right after they got ALOT of exercise will definitely make them colic just as not making sure they don’t have water after exercising. Giving them water after exercising is VERY good for them so they don’t dehydrate, and also you should’ve hosed them down to help cool them off... and also in one of gabby’s videos of riding with a GoPro she said that horses know what is poisonous to them and what isn’t, which is also VERY false. Why do you think horses die from eating things their not supposed to? Because they don’t know what’s poisonous to them!! Which doesn’t take a genius to figure out. PLEASE for the sake of your horses do your research, sometimes being a know it all from what you think isn’t always a good choice... (btw this wasn’t ment to be hate if it seemed like it...)

So true, you are 100% correct, Gabby might know a great deal about horses, but if you give a horse feed when it is puffing and has just exercised like they did, there is like a 90% chance they will colic, she was very lucky. As you said she needs to do some research, it's all a learning process.

DayByDay Vlogs It’s actually just on old wives tail, giving a hot horse water has never caused colic but withholding will. It’s good to start giving the hot horse water in small amounts, but dehydration it’s much more likely to cause colic. There’s lots of articles on it. www.succeed-equine.com/succeed-blog/2015/02/23/monday-myth-withhold-water-hot-horse/

DayByDay Vlogs the views on that have changed Laura, it’s now ok in moderation and aids the cooling process, you see them offer race horses a drink straight after they’ve raced, often done whilst they’re washing them off and walking them around 😊 No harm in waiting a short while though, just wouldn’t have fed them until they’d cooled down etc 👍

DayByDay Vlogs We give our barrel horses all the water they want after they run and it has never done anything bad. they are huffing and puffing and are all worked up, just like your boys were. the water in their system helps them cool off, especially after a long run. for future reference, never give them grain right after something like that, let them cool off
@wellhowboutthatmax2023
@wellhowboutthatmax2023 3 года назад
No hate, but rather than make excuses for feeding them, just learn that it wasnt the right thing to do, there was no great desperate need to feed them, so I dont understand why you did. Also I think you allow Gabby to make the decisions to do things that should be done by a responsible adult. It was wrong to feed grain when they were still not cooled off and back to normal, they should have been allowed to cool done, with access to some water

@mered30

@lydiaequestrian4197
@lydiaequestrian4197 3 года назад
Several things 1- if your horses were still huffing and puffing, they should be walked until they’re breathing is normal and they are cool to the touch, especially after such heavy exercise 2- water should be offered to your horses, even if they are very hot still, they just should not drink a ton of it, water helps to cool off the horses and they can get choke and impaction’s from dehydration, especially when they are that sweaty and hot 3- I will NOT be shocked if one of your next videos is how one of your horses had colic... They should never get grain right after exercise, even if they just had grass... eating food right after a lot of exercise will make them colic… You are an adult, you should be responsible enough to know that when you own horses, sometimes you need to take things into your own hands instead of letting your child make all these life or death decisions with your animals Also take responsibility for your mistakes, don’t make excuses because nobody is fooled

Kudos to the kind person who reacted quickly and tried to block the horses with their car. Horses are amazing, BUT that flight reflex they have is a little crazy sometimes.🤦‍♀️ Full moon+ crazy weather+ hangry storm= Stampede!! Less stress if they did get out they couldn't get onto road . We did wood posts horse fencing with hotwire along inside top of fence. They avoided the fence and it looked really nice I do get not putting fencing onto your existing farm too expensive for sure but just remembered how stressful it was until we got that permanent fencing. Good job with the fencing! One thing though - the long grass around the perimeter might make the fence not as effective as it could be. If there's anything touching the wire/rope of the fencing (long grass, leaves, branches etc) that would be lessening the electricity that passes through the wire/rope.

A Betadine scrub or solution soaked on some 4 x 4 gauze pads works really well for cleaning and disinfecting wounds or lacerations like those ones and you can just leave a bit of the Betadine on there for antiseptic and keeping the bacteria away. If you use a sterile saline solution, it burns way less than just using water. That’s why Horses react a little bit more Ouchy when you wash or rinse a wound with just water. Kind of like when you cut your leg in the shower shaving and when you run it under the water burns like heck. The Betadine is also a really good treatment for rain rot.

Huge fan!!!! 🐴☺️sorry to hear about chino I hope he gets better soon . But also I know you guys like the electric fences and it is cheaper , however your property that is outlined with this electric fence is not going to keep your horses in .. it’s just a matter of time before they figure out how to get through those two strips of electric held up by those little metal posts . You should look into getting wooden fences put in maybe 🤷🏼‍♀️

You need to cool the horses down and let them walk around after they ran around just the same way as if you were finishing up with a ride. giving them grain when they are that worked up greatly increases the risk of them colicing and i wouldn’t want that to happen to any of your horses

This brings back memories. I'll never forget the phone call I received early one morning "your horse is out!". Lucky I lived in a small country town and they knew my horse. Found him wandering the neighbourhood saying hello to everyone, horses, people, dogs, no concern at all just happy plodding along. Guess he couldn't wait for me to take him for a walk that day. I think it took me most of the day to calm down though, very scary.

My favorite fencing is probably high tensile woven horse fencing. It is durable, visible and lasts a long time. I have never had a break out or injury with it. 3 inch woven I find is best. Just an idea for the new farm. I hope you find one soon.

My friend has a horse that could push through the electric fence so they added another fence in one of the gate (I don’t know if you will understand because I can’t explain things well) Ok so this emoji 🗒 basically looks like the paddock, were the fold goes across is were they put another fence and in front of it is the actual gate. Ps sorry again for the bad explanation ❤️ Ok so 📝 were the pencil is is were the extra fence was put in in front of the gate ( omg 😆 I’m so sorry that probably made no sense 😂) So basically it adds extras protection, As well as the fences off area that you put in.❤️

It is not a nice feeling when they escape. My boy last winter in dec escaped decided too jump over barbed wire at the back off his field through a hedge and into someone else’s field ... not at our yard. Took 3 hours too find a way out eventually finding the owner off the property too unlock the gate and I had too lead him back on the main busy road in dark with heavy traffic. My heart was racing. Was so glad we made it back home safe I had too cry lol . It is not nice traveling back so far from the road . How he never hurt himself that day I will never no ! Hope there all okay.

LOL..I love Storm!! He has the same "horsenality" as my horse. Mine used to break out and stand in the middle of the road blocking traffic. It's no fun having a cop knock on your door in the morning because no one can't get to work or school 😅 When they threatened to charge me with manslaughter if someone died as a result of my horse getting out needless to say I built a better fence.

They were not deep and they are almost healed. I wish I could diagnose via video. I would be rich being able to tell people what to do and how to treat things.
@julialeblanc1875
@julialeblanc1875 3 года назад
@@DayByDayVlogs your being unnecessarily defensive. Around here (new england usa) we often sends our vets pictures or videos of injuries if we are not sure if they should come out. So actually yes, there are people that can often diagnose through video. And I too thought the cut looked much deeper. I've seen cuts that looked superficial and you could stick a whole finger under them because of the angle of the cut. It's also not weird for someone to think he may need to be on smz's for that many flesh wounds. It's common practice for preventative measures. If I determined the cuts were superficial I would cold hose to prevent swelling and get out dirt and then silver spray to keep out bacteria and help the healing process. Please don't get mad at some of these people. I feel they really do care and want to spread education. These Re common items to have on your farm(silver spray, smz's) and it's common to send the vet a photo even if they don't need to come out to the farm.
@Alecbaby18
@Alecbaby18 3 года назад
@@julialeblanc1875 yes. Their vet, not a random stranger on the internet. I’m sure after this happened, they called their vet and/or trainers for advice. They don’t need us telling them what to do when we don’t see this happening to them in person.
@julialeblanc1875
@julialeblanc1875 3 года назад
@@Alecbaby18 this was three months ago. A little late. But I did not offer an opinion my self on what I thought they should do. I'm not their vet. I simply said it's not uncommon some of the things people suggested. And that getting defensive when you put yourself out there on social media is going to get these kinds of responses. You can't get defensive to every person giving a well intentioned opinion.
