Wow. Am I happy not to live and work with Americans anymore ... All visual and absolutely NO feelings. People are fed up of "acting" and being politically correct. If you have been well educated and have good manners, then thats sufficient amongst intelligent adults in ANY situation to have a normal conversation. I remember the first time I went to the US, several tables of our company and theirs mixed and the boss doing rounds to every table to make sure everything was OK ..... I sincerely made my company people feel sick and ill at ease. Does this mean that everything isn't OK sometimes and that she was just checking to make sure we had no complaints ? IF we had; we wouldn't have mentioned them to her in anycase !

I can really relate to the awkward 'handshake or hug'. A friend I've known for forty years were departing one another. I reached to shake. He reached to hug. It was so awkward. That was four years ago, and it still is top of mind. I'm fully aware that this qualifies as a first-world problem.

Appearing to have low confidence isn't really that bad because people will make allowances but saying your name very quickly risks making you look like you're just going through the motions and that's pretty much guaranteed to put everyone's back up straight away. Always saying your name clearly is one of the most underrated skills you can ever learn.

Introductions are very important. I started my current job 10 months ago. It started horribly. I was incredibly excited, but that quickly flipped when I saw the team, extremely low energy and no one willing to say hi. For 6 months I was a hermit while everyone talked, even joked. I felt abandoned. Finally, one by one they started talking to me as a human instead of some robot they were commanding, but after 6 months of isolation now my thoughts have turned to suspicion. Sad way to go to work everyday. All could've been avoided if they were nice for just the initial 2 minutes.

In case it helps anyone: i had a voice coach tell me to never use "my name is" and use "I'm / I am" instead. This spares words in your introduction, which helps you to be more briefly informative, is more direct and friendly at the same time, and presents your name in a confident way.

Handshake? Hug? Better option is the airborn chest bump. Most people won't reciprocate and you'll end up just awkwardly jumping into them and possibly knocking them over but it's the best filtering system out there. I mean, do you really want those people who delcine a chest bump in your life anyway?

Excellent advice and system! I can't tell you how many times I've heard people rush their names (and phone numbers) -- I know THEY know their name, but I don't! I'm name challenged so a clear, slow presentation would be great. My wife is sick of me squirming and complaining when, for example, non-profit theater directors come out before the show and make horrible presentations. As a recovering standup comedian, I cringe at their lowering the crowd energy before a performance. I paused the video to be sure and write down all your tips! Thanks!

GENTLEMEN! Do NOT offer a handshake to a lady. Let her offer her hand, if she so desires. Offering your hand first is passive aggressive. You're are putting her in a position to accept touching you, or to create an awkward moment by declining. Don't assume she wants you to touch her! No, as a matter of fact, we are NOT the same. Women have different concerns than men. Not offering your hand is not "old fashioned" or sexist. It's being respectful of the very real differences between men and women.
@BeauOnTheGo_DC
@BeauOnTheGo_DC 4 месяца назад
As a woman, I appreciate when anyone offers their hand in a culture where handshakes are appropriate. If I don’t want to accept it, I don’t have to accept it. If a man doesn’t offer his hand (and it is culturally acceptable to do so) I’d wonder about his lack of manners.
@TK-zz6wk
@TK-zz6wk 4 месяца назад
@@BeauOnTheGo_DCthen you’re creating an awkward moment for the other person. Smh
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben 3 месяца назад
@@TK-zz6wkI agree. When you initially meet someone, its normal to offer some form of contact. If both parties don't show they're willing, and what they prefer (hug, handshake, fist bump), it leaves the other party in that awkward split second quandary ... are they a germaphobe? Hate physical contact? Just don't want to? Do I force the issue by extending my hand first? Also, the assumption that women are scared of a simple handshake is not helpful. First, it can imply lack of respect in the workplace. Second, it's other predatory behavior that might go with it that we don't like. If they're reaching for a handshake but staring at our chest, or refuse to let go of our hand, THAT'S a problem! 😂

"Blade" can be very rude for many cultures, including in the USA when the person you are meeting does not want to shake your hand. By pushing your hand out signaling "shake my hand" you have now put the other person in an awkward spot. If they don't want to or culturally it is against their religious belief to shake your hand, they now appear "rude" to the person who doesn't receive a handshake in return.

Honestly, I don't care about most of that. As long as they're engaged, as in not on their phone or looking at that bird over there, and they speak clearly I'm good. I don't want all the fluff and I definitely don't want a hug, there's no need for a stranger to be pushing/resting their bumps against you. At best we'd be leaning in but then it's just fake so it's getting avoided.

My mom always told me; If a lady wants you to touch her, she’ll reach her hand out first. As a man, you should never extend your hand first. When entering a home and are being introduced to the lady of the house, she should always extend her hand to you as a gesture that you’re welcomed in her home. If a husband introduces you to his wife, the wife should extend her hand as a ‘any friend of my husband’ thing. Single women should always make the first move…….never the guy.

This is cool in a personal setting. In the professional world, please feel free to extend that hand, or it might look like you're dismissive, or afraid of personal contact.

I have interviewed job applicants. Me,another man, and a female hiring manager, men are the only ones applying for the job. Almost none of them shake the females hand, they shake our hands. She finds it weird, like they think less of her or something.

@@helenalimo3133sexist or not in some cultures, women will not extend their hand, because it isn't acceptable or even forbidden and it will be extremely awkward if a man will try to go for a handshake or anything like it.

I live in France. We just kiss everybody. That way you don't actually have to worry about your facial expression when introducing yourself. Victory

I am recently missing a half pinkie finger: I’m a trained handshake introduction, but `omg it hurts to have someone crush at that finger stub Now what??

Being tied to "Perfect" is your root of "Awkward". It's this easy: "This is a Glock and my name is Evan. There's no need for the handcuffs if you behave."
