A Great, Inexpensive Safety Razor - The Parker 99R

I feel like the mild razors give you more nicks because if you want to be shaven smooth you go multible times over the same spot and it cuts you up pretty good

Today at 49 years old I used my first ever safety razor merkur 25c with arko soap. I loved it so much that after watching you use this Parker 99r, I just ordered it also!

I bought a Merkur 34c as my first safety razor and I love it. I am thinking of buying this one as an alternative. Merkur short handle and mild vs. this Parker with a long handle and more aggression.

I have the 22R in gun metal finish. Too mild but a great starter razor. I have the 24C. 3 piece open comb. Great razor. Medium aggressive, smooth shaver.

Nice job, S/L. I was recently PIFed a 99R. I'm starting to like it more but it's taken some time. It's so much heftier than the vintage Gillettes I generally use.

It's not the first time a nic has opened up after a shave and went unnoticed and then gets commented on at work, wife is that used to it she doesn't even bother to say anything anymore. Yet another great shave in the pantheon, SinatraLennon. The Barbasol razor which Donald Younger has is a rather attractive vintage in a nice little case.

I used your favorite razor, the Leaf, last week to shave my head at night. Had 2 cuts, used alum and it did not stop it. Then I used peroxide w a cotton. Went to bed and the next morning my pillow was blood stained....not cool.... I had cut myself only once before...in 14months. Cheers

I haven't had the chance to shave with the Parker line. I'm really tempted to add the Parker Variant with graphite finish to my collection along with the Merkur Progress (I have the Vikings Blade Emperor Augustus adjustable). I also have a later Gillette Fatboy.

You make shaving with a safety razor look so easy....

I enjoy my butterfly (63 Gillette slim). When I let a few days go by and the whiskers get long the razor can get a little clogged.. I just give a little twist ..shake underwater.. tighten.. clean !

I use the 99r as my first razor and love it. I do want to upgrade to something else. As recommendations

"Little Bo-Beep can't find her Treets. The cow jumped over the moon and the shaving bowl ran away with a spoon." -- Rhyming is not by biggest strength, I admit it. The Parker 99R is really beautiful, I love both the spiral design of the handle and the two knobs at the bottom. Parker is really great at creating non-slip handles, the one on my 29L is really foolproof, even with soapy hands. So far, the TTO mechanism hasn't fallen apart, either, despite a drop in the shower. I knocked the entire shower basket out of its hinges, it flew into the air, contents an all, and gravity did its duty. Durability doesn't seem to be a problem with Parker TTOs. However, I got two of the worst cuts in my life from that Parker. I remember five cuts that were more than a nick. The worst one was from the Parker 29L, a two inch slash in the armpit. Took three months to completely disappear. Second worst are a series of five circular-shaped cuts I inflicted on myself with a straight razor -- while trying to do it "the correct way". I shaved my legs effortlessly several times with a straight razor. Against the grain. Then I decided to take the advice of an internet shaver to always use a straight with the grain. I did it, but the skin curled up in front of the blade (even though I did tighten it manually, I'm not a newbie) and then there was blood in the lather. I used alum (don't remember which type) and the bleeding stopped. But the next day, I had five circular scars, descending in size. Now, three months later, they are almost gone, but the spots can still be seen through the new layers of skin. Cut number three was with the Parker again. Two circular cuts right above the ankle. It was the first time I cut myself seriously with a safety razor, and I had to twist the TTO open to rinse the blood out. Unlike the previous cuts, including the one with the straight razor, this one was painful. Took several months to disappear. Cut number four was with a shavette. Small, crescent-shaped scar that bled profusely. Took several months to fade away completely. I never used the shavette again after that. Number five was a cut into the lip with...a Mühle R89, which is traditionally rated one of the mildest razors, and I even agree. It is mild. However, accidents can happen, and it looked like somebody had punched me into the mouth: Blood all over it. I tried an ammonium alum bloc (ammonium is usually stingier than potassium), and it was both painful and useless. I had to use a couple of pads to absorb the blood before it had coagulated. This cut, although very gory, healed within a month. In retrospect, I think alum might interfere with the healing of larger cuts. A tiny nick, as small as a grain of salt, can be fixed with an alum bloc. The skin pulls tight and the nick is gone. But it doesn't work well for larger cuts because the blood doesn't get a chance to clot.

I also enjoy shaving with a safety razor instead of a cartridge razor witch are way too expensive to buy. I can get a better shave with my Parker 99R and a good shaving cream or soap.

Hey dude! I like the fact that you tried a Parker razor “ underrated “ I can sand you one the 3 pieces of them so if you would make a video with it you could keep it kind of thing lol. Hey Sinatra the way my beard grows along the jaws is sideways toward my chin. So your cross grain pass is against the grain for me. I shave down and up for my 2nd pass but it still don't knock it down enough for the against pass. How should I go about it?

The beginning bit was from GoodFeather's ... right? Anyway SinatraLennon I was going through some of my Dad's old stuff and came across a Fat Boy 1960 Gillette in the original plastic box. I used an online site to track the serial number. There was also an original Trac II handle and a Schick Injector razor - with no blades. Have you ever tried using the Schick Injector? I was reading that it's been around since the 1920's and was inspired by a gun/magazine system. I could send you the one I have which is likely a 1960's era model.

Well I just found a Van der Hagen kit at HEB for $7.50..... I agree w you regarding M 34; and all the "experts" recommending it annoys me as I too wasted money on it. Same way they say Fatip is dangerous and I find it perfect.

May I suggest flexing your skin? I just got a pretty bad cut on my chin because my skin got caught up between the razor and the guard. It instantly closed with the alumn block, but I won't risk it again by not flexing the skin!

I was not happy with the Merkur either.I bought an Edwin Jagger, much better. Didn't like the handle but got a great knurled SS handle from West Coast Shaving. And then came Rockwell! Got the Parker because I wanted a butterfly to satisfy my curiosity. Not bad. I now have both the Rockwell 6C(gunmetal) and the 6S. I am considering getting a Karve in brass because I like the look and it has excellent reviews. I never expected that this would become a hobby! Do I need an intervention?

I'm new again to the game of safety razors, I used the old plastic Wilkinson Sword Classic and now I own the new metal Wilkinson Sword Classic, funny, both are called classic. So do you recommend to use a new blade for every shave? When I used the old plastic classic, I didn't and the blades were all right for more than one shave. It's not my plan to use a new blade for every shave. I amazoned 100 blades from russia for a low price with good Amazon reviews even for more than one shave. They are called Astra platinum-classic and rumor says they also make those blades for Gillette UK with a different print. 100 Blades for 8,49€, around 9USD. Here we have a store called Globus that is a bit like Walmart, but they're not all over Germany.

To any of the shaving experts reading this please answer this dumb question. If I do 3 passes in one shave, does that counts as 3 shaves per blade or 1 shave per blade? What I m trying to ask is that no.of passes equal no. of shaves or 3 passes equal one shave per blade? Thank you
