A review of Passio's Personal Size Large Print Bible in the Modern English Version (MEV). My copy is in cherry brown imitation leather (ISBN 9781629980676).
The MEV is a relatively recent translation, having been published in 2014. Its New Testament is usually based on the Textus Receptus. (In this video, I show a few instances where it translates a different text.) The MEV appears to avoid the use of modern gender inclusive language.
This edition features a sewn binding, approximately 30 gsm paper, a large (12 point) font, line-matched text, and the words of Christ in red ink. The Bible's page edges are coated with rose gold foil, and its single red satin ribbon is a quarter of an inch wide.
It is a portable Bible, measuring 8 13/16 x 5 3/4 x 1 9/16 inches in dimensions.

Some folks on here wonder why the MEV over the NKJV, so I’ll give a few here: 1. Easier to read than the NKJV (both in sentence structure and updated wording. 2. Includes all of the same verses that the TR-based translations do. 3. Follows along well with Critical Text translations like the ESV, CSB, NASB, etc. 4. I originally wanted the notes that the NKJV version has, but have since changed my mind as it clutters the page somewhat and confuses newer believers. 5. Sticks closer to the KJV in wording than the NKJV. -Having said that, both versions are excellent to use. The original purpose of the MEV was to be a more modern update of the KJV for troops (as one may read in the preface, and also more modern than the NKJV (which can be inferred from the marketing).

The problem with the MEV is critical text folks will likely not adopt it, preferring the ESV, NIV, etc. We see this with the CSB and other newer translations, they have a huge uphill battle against the incumbents. TR-preferred tends to align neatly with KJV-only. Those that are TR-preferred but are OK with new translations are perfectly happy with the NKJV.

Great Bible, great translation. I've given away quite a few of the paperback versions to people who have been KJV but are open to having a second translation to use. Few of the ESV, NIV, etc users will gravitate to the MEV but that's OK. Hoping they get that second edition published at some point. I would love to switch our church over to the MEV down the road.

Grant, Thank you for another excellent review, and thanks also to your viewers' valuable contributions! This review has set me thinking again! Until the cultural decline began to set up exponentially, there was a real "public" problem of having a text that was TR/KJV but more modernised as
@alex-qe8qn
@alex-qe8qn 2 года назад
....as with MEV. Now, however, I find that matters are radically changed. We no longer have such "public" needs, and serious Bible students are gathering and studying in smaller numbers. Paradoxically, I have found that two editions have greatly benefitted such Bible study : the Trinitarian Bible Society's AV/KJV Westminster Reference Bible, and Thomas Nelson's NKJV Open Bible. Even "ordinary" students, but being motivated to study the Scriptures, have greatly enjoyed and profited from these two Bibles. Mind you, I agree that we could do with more marginal notes; and I have urged both publishers in that direction! If only they would produce a joint parallel Bible...but I guess that pigs are going to fly over before that happens!

Thank you for the review! My thinline reference edition doesn't have the list of translators, so I will need to visit a friend who has the edition you reviewed, and take some photos :-) Your list of variations has re-enforced my belief that the MEV was rushed, and minor mistakes were made. (I still like it as a translation, though!) There was supposed to be a 2019 update to the MEV, but maybe due to the events of the last two years, this update has not made it to general release.

Haven't read this one much, but I'm not sure if I see the relevance of this translation. I would have liked to see a Majority Text edition without the capitalised pronouns for diety and of course in all black letters and if they have references, where the references should be in the centre column. There does seem to a bit of departure from TR even though it states it follows the TR in the preface. The reason for prefaces it to give the reader a clear view of the translation process, not to say one thing and do differently. There are a few what I call "near" Bibles like the NKJV and the ESV. Had the NKJV translation team chosen to use the Majority Text instead of the TR and not capitalised pronouns for diety, and kept the footnotes and be more bold and robust in them, it would be, in my opinion at least, the Byzantine text standard. Had the ESV used more of the Septuagint and Deas Sea Scrolls, especially where the Hebrew in the Masoretic Text is not certain or unclear, and where the NT writers make quotes or allusions to the Septuagint, or at least been more consistent with their footnotes where there is textual variants between the Masoretic Text, the LXX, DSS and other ancient manuscripts, I think it would be the standout version among the modern critical texts. All in all, of all the English translations out there, of which thee are many, I much prefer the ESV and NKJV over all the rest. I for one think there are enough English translations of the Bible for publishers to now rather than coming up with a new one, to focusing on the reading public. Those people who are actually going to be buying the Bibles they have published. What I mean is, there are too many editions where you can't read them or don't want to read them because of poor printing, ghosting, terrible paper quality or bad fonts and type setting etc. Focus on the readers, make red letter editons for people who like that sort of thing and black letter versions for people like me. Spending time in crafting better Bibles for better reading experiences should be the goal of Bible publishing rather than making a new one. By the way I prefer the chart with the space in it, it gives a real impression of how free the NLT really is.
@RGrantJones
@RGrantJones 2 года назад
Thanks for the detailed comment, Edward! You and I agree on many points. The MEV is new to me, too, and although I'm not opposed to new translations, I have difficulty seeing what niche it fits into. It seems to me that the MEV is very close to the NKJV, but perhaps the fact that the MEV lacks the NKJV's textual notes make it more appealing to TR purists. I saw a video in which Michael Brown recommend the MEV over the NKJV, but he didn't explain his reasons. Thanks also for letting me know which chart you prefer. That's two in favor of the copy with the blank space.
@edwardgraham9443
@edwardgraham9443 2 года назад
@@RGrantJones It does depart from the TR is quite a few places, but the TR purists are an odd bunch. They dislike the NKJV because of its notes, yet its the notes that makes the NKJV such a good translation to have. What is wrong in notes? They show where there are variants between the TR and other modem critical texts which I believe should have been a gold thing. If the TR is what you prefer then the NKJV's notes would help show you where the critical texts differ and allow you to decide on the different options. But I guest they just say TR and nothing else.

@edwardgraham9443
@edwardgraham9443 2 года назад
@@gilbertculloden87 I'm not sure what they are at. The NKJV is a TR text yet they rivile it. The problem I have with the TR is that it's actually in a league of its own. It differs from the Majority Text in many places and has verses that other Majority and Byzantine text don't have. Also in my research I see where there are more than one different TR texts. Even Erasmus text aren't the same in all its editions, yet somehow it is elevated above all other manuscripts. I love the NKJV and I have nothing against the KJV other than that it proves difficult to read at times for me and there verses that aren't supported by either the majority of other Byzantine texts or the critical texts. I for one think it's a good idea to have a Bible from both manuscript family, to aid in better understanding of the Bible. The ESV and the NKJV are my preferred translations, the NASB 95 is good but I can't seem to get into the 2020 text. It just doesn't suit me at all. Same with the CSB. I much prefer essentially literal translations so that might be why I can't warm to the CBS and the NASB 2020 is a literal translation, I'm not fond of it either.
