Angelina Jordan Background + Commentary 'I Put a Spell On You' 

I don’t care about high notes, low notes, vibrato, vocal fry, .....etc. I want a singer that make me laugh, make me cry, make me happy, make me sad, make me jump up and down, and make my mind and thoughts go to places that they have never been to. I want a singer that can enter my heart and touches my soul. Angelina Jordan does that. Thank you.

If Bob Dylan is the modern day Shakespeare, Angelina's genius is comparable to a modern day Mozart.

Her grandmothers influence cannot be underestimated, she really seems to be the one who has seen and nurtured Angelina's talent. Amazing woman.

Most reactors are amazed at her ability to capture a jazz sound but I believe that she is rapt in the world of jazz when she sings this ... a higher level of understanding. I saw Jay Hawkins version of this but Angelina turns it more serious in it's intent. This is much more than musical athleticism.

Alan, your favorite part of the song, just before the "operatic ending", where she's singing "Oh, oh, oh, oh....", take note of her control. The first phrase of it is done with one breath. Likewise, many have commented on her holding the last note of the song, surprised she was able to sing it without her voice cracking or losing volume (when she sings "now") But the breath actually begins with "I'm yours...." This kind of breath control is off the charts for a child and underappreciated by many of her fans....In later versions of this song (and everything else she's done), we don't find her using the growls and screams she uses here. This is to avoid damage to her vocal chords.

I really enjoyed your commentary on the Queen of music Angelina Jordan .she is a god's gifted super special super star entertainer. She is very unique and has a very very rare talent. Angelina could sing anything and everything. You probably seen the best of best and from all the rest now we are looking at the most very best of the best and from all the rest and the rest is going to be ( HERSTORY) history. She'll go down in history as one of the greatest of all time along with the other greatest such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley just to name a few. Angelina's operatic ending is amazing and may be a kind of reference to the original. Screamin Jay Hawkins' initial goal was to become an opera singer. Hawkins cited Paul Robeson as his musical idol in interviews.

I absolutely love that there's nothing contrived about Angelina. She is no trained seal. Everything that comes out of her flows through her soul and just comes out the way it comes out with Angelina painted all over it!

The hard part, as you alluded to (maybe indirectly) is that it is difficult to find words to adequately explain/describe/ express the personal soulful/spiritual connection that Angelina generates with each individual listener. She sings to me, for me, and I feel it deeply. I don't know what you feel. It may be very different . But, ultimately, she does the same to you and to every listener. Her ability to connect, to share her interpretation of the song, is almost other worldly. Another overused word (but what can we do?) Is amazing...time and time again. I hopped on your train. It does a great service to those who have just been introduced to her or those who need some of the "gaps" filled in. I have been following her since NGT in 2013/14 and, like you, have tried to acquire as much knowledge about her as possible. When I watch other reactors and they say something like, "How old is she in this video?", I find myself saying out loud to my computer screen, "9". Or, when they start watching her video, stop it and say, "I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes..", I blurt out, "Just wait!". I look forward to your next reaction/commentary of our girl. Everyone has their own go-to statement about Angelina. Mine is: "Angelina doesn't sing songs. She sings emotions that go directly to our souls to create beauty and joy." This is Angelina's world. We just live in it!

I just came across this video, and after listening to the first 2 minutes, I subscribed. People can analyze Angelina all they want, but for me, it's 'emotions'. She draws emotions from you that a child her age should have no comprehension of, but yet she still does it. Almost every song I listen to, brings tears to my eyes for any number of reasons, and sometimes for reasons I have no understanding of. I think I've heard every song she has on RU-vid at least 50 times each, but every time, the tears still get pulled from my eyes. I look forward to your reactions.

Well, I agree that trying understanding her through “analysis” is essentially pointless. So here is my analysis. 😂 Technically, Angelina obviously has at her disposal an insanely vast array of extremely well-developed vocal skills, tricks, ornaments, devices etc. that she can call upon. She has total confidence in every one of those devices. But that’s not what makes her a great singer. In my opinion, when Angelina is performing a song, her objective is not to show off her technical skills. It is to convey the meaning, the mood, the emotion of the song. She does that by applying those devices that I talked about. They are not the end. They are the means to the end. The song is basically a painting in sound. The vocal devices in her repertoire are the paint brushes, the colors, the textures. She uses them, mixes them and combines them however she feels is necessary in order to achieve her objective which again is essentially to make us *feel* the song. And while I don’t want to put down other artists, this, in my opinion, is what separates her from others like, for example, the dude whose name starts with “D”. Again, her skills are not the end. They are not the objective of the performance. She conveys what she needs to with her voice. Yes, she has a confident stage presence, she commands her attention. But she doesnt need drama or theatrics in order to convey the emotion of the song to us. I don’t want your space to be about negative comparisons with others, but I think it’s important to illustrate the point that I’m making. I don’t think what I’m saying here is anything deeply insightful or profound. But it is the closest thing I can come up with to explain the impact she has on me. She’s not just a story teller. She creates gorgeous landscapes of sound that go far beyond a simple narrative. They go straight to the soul. Or, if you prefer, the limbic system. 😃 I’ve had a few medical issues over the past year and there are times when I was maybe a little scared, depressed, alone and isolated from my family. I discovered Angelina around the same time I was given a pair of AirPod pros. Angelina’s voice was a big part of helping me tolerate and get through some pretty rough times. And you don’t have that affect on somebody by simply telling a story or showing off your vocal tricks. The kid is nothing short of a goddamn genius and I am so glad she signed that deal with Republic Records and will have an opportunity to really share her talents, healing powers, positive messages and charitable character with a broader audience.

The end, In my mind, ANGELina's thinking... "hmmm..... I wonder, was there anything I could've done better?", or "hmmm.... is this the take we're gonna use?" Screaming Jay Hawkins version is a novelity, crossover between varietè and comedy, drama and artistic. After seing his performance, I'm even more impressed over the way a 9 yr old making this GEM of an arrangement, paying homage to the original, and still elevating it to gold.

Alan, you should probably head on over to Boris Palenovski's channel and strike up a conversation with him. I'm sure he could give you some additional insight. He's got a ton of AJ videos, when I asked him where he got them all he said he's followed AJ for quite a while and attends her concerts whenever he can. They gave him permission to post his recordings of the ones he's been to.

Of course this is a one-off performance that isn't really Angelina's style, but the fact that she is able to pull it off is remarkable. There is one thing that I keep going back to. During the sax solo, the look on her face is priceless. It's maybe half Mona Lisa smile and half Elvis sneer. I think it's fantastic.

Beyond superlative... thanks for so much homework on the grandmother. I've wanted Shackleford to keep a chart on first-timer reactions: "(1) What?!! (2) How?!! (3) This isn't possible!" You've covered these... what was your first-ever reaction? (Mine was a dead-stop, headphone check, exit video, start it again.) One other reaction: people stop. Dead in their seated-tracks. Many women reactors will eventually pick the rhythm back up, and sensually, as if "This is how I could sing this, too" - ie, with all that feeling. Males bounce around sometimes, but many of them simply stay 'still' - is if moving, flinching, might break that spell. Angelinaologists, huh? Right now, I'm still enjoying a variety of reactors over this year and a half.

Back again for another comment. We often question why Ange!ina's singing affects us so deeply. For many (most?) singers the lyrics are just words on the score. I wonder if Angelina learned how to interpret lyrics from her poet grandmother to understand the meaning of the song and then convey it to us. A very sensitive young person.
