There will always be animals on boats, whether you want them there or not. To live on a boat means living with nature: on land in the sea and in the air. Some are friendlier than others and will make your life better. Some won’t...
Sailors over the centuries have often gone to sea with animals. As ratters or to eat, but also as pets. With wives, children and dear ones left behind, monkeys, cats, dogs and birds became the companions of those old sailors.

Schipperke's, the little black Belgian barge dogs, are often thought of as good boat dogs. Yes, they get top points for guarding, plus a bonus of being afraid of the water, so rarely jump ship except by accident and quite trainable to use a litterbox (ours needed only two days of training with treats and done). However, they are very dominant, so young kids on board are treated as chew toys (I would often get up in the morning to find my young boys all sleeping on the floor with the schipperke happily sleeping on one of their beds, resting majestically on his claimed pillow). They are also notoriously short lived, due to hanging if left on a leash when they try to jump, choking on absolutely anything they can get in their mouths when ashore (I got so tired of fishing dead frogs, crab shells, rocks out of his throat, or drowning because they freak out in a storm and jump over...and swim terribly). They also will eat anything if given the chance, favourite objects being teak steps and every figure eight on every line aboard. Now we have cats, both our boat and one son on his own sailboat now. Much calmer and far easier to manage, except when they treat the stern arch as a jungle gym. Your comment on cats being easier to travel with is also spot on! Dogs are often threatened with impounding or euthanasia, cats rarely get more than a shrug.

Geckos are fabulous. Their other name is chickchacks. We have them at home here in aus too. Their poo can look like mouse droppings but has a white tip. Weird I’m not sure why but they tend to live behind our pictures on the wall.

In the evenings there are a bunch of pelicans that go fishing near the boat. And they seem very successful too. And in the morning while drinking my tea I often see birds passing by, usually on paddle boards :)

Great hearing from you, guys. I guess the ideal would be a cat and a tokay (sp.?) but I figure they would not be compatable in which the cat would prevail, yes? I still have this dream that much like Millie in Turkey a kitten will wander onto Esper and into your lives. All best as always.

Tokays are quite fierce and large; I have no doubt they'd hold their own against most cats.

Yes, it's something similar to Phifertex. That effect is a mismatch of shutter speed and frame rate. Earlier podcasts don't display this effect as I'm able to record in a low frame rate/shutter speed ratio, but later podcasts are recorded on an action camera, for which I have no ND filters so have to increase the shutter speed. I thought I'd go into detail on my reply what with you being an obsessive scientist 😉

We call the micro-ants “sugar ants” here. I’ve had success using off the shelf ant bait/poison stations from Amazon. They are miraculously resilient tho.

Omg... our cat fell overboard after 3 years of living aboard. We actually heard the splash and it was dark. We were running around like mad men trying to find her but she found the sugar scoops and simply climbed back aboard like it was old hat ! Lucky or an experienced cat ? She spends maybe 5% of her time alone, so we have no idea of what mischief she has gotten up to when we are ashore.

I remember exactly the moment Millie first went in. It was nighttime at anchor in Turkey. Jamie duved in to get her, but she was so fast anf got herself up on the swimming platform! After that we always hung a thick carpet of rope over the back for her to climb up. So glad to know yours was OK. 💛🙏 Liz🐾

Terrariums.. But you only pretend to forget to make me comment, didn't you? 😆 They sell rat poison in Indo that makes the rats go out to light and die in the open, and also they don't rot but dry out. Scary poison. Better use the cage.

The only problem with the cage is that you then have to introduce them to free diving, which isn't very pleasant. Not a nice way to go 😢

No, boric acid is very mild, I use it as an eye bath. It's also tucked away in the places secretive cockroaches like, so unlikely to be near a cat. 🙏🪳☺️ Liz

Cockroaches!Ughh. First problem they fly, second problem they are dirty, third problem they love moist wood and cardboard, fourth problem they breed profusely, fifth problem their droppings taste disgusting leaving you wanting to take your whole mouth out to give a thorough scrub with harsh chemicals. Only positive is that a good surface spray will get the lot in one go, as a rule. Environmental damage be damned…..I use surface spray, as long as they die well before I do, that is good. I was sort of thinking of Hermit Crabs….for a few minutes. I wouldn’t hesitate to have a fish tank, I could get quite creative with that. I could dedicate one port window in the saloon in place of the books I never read. I’d live for the day when someone on the dock spotted fish swimming across the window, on the inside of the boat. You didn’t cover monkeys or pet rocks. There is one guy in the marina here who has a dog, but also Bonsai plants. Most people with boats when it comes to pets settle for another human, however problematic they tend to be.

Cockroaches... bleaughrgh! Horrible things! We mentioned monkeys in passing but only as pests, not pets. In Krabi, a marina built in among the mangroves, a troop of around 50 moneys would descend on the marina every afternoon. Local workers learned to keep their packed lunches hidden but if they could find a way into the boats on the hard, they would. Aggressive too.

Unfortunatly we couldn't watch this because of the nauseating imaging behind you - that screen or water or whatever it is simply unwathable. It is like have a blinking strobe light. Your videos used to not have that effect. Not sure if it is a new lense or camera...but I am sure you must see it too, right? Our family watches you on a large Samsung TV and we all had to skip it a few times now.
