My partner, Dorie Pride, and I sang with Tony Newley in the late seventies in Las Vegas, Tahoe, Reno, Florida and Long Island, NY. I adored him. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.

I grew up loving a lot of songs that I eventually found out were written by Anthony Newley. And then I found out he grew up in Hackney and went to Italia Conti, same school as my daughter, but she went early 90s. I was fascinated by the man. So talented. It bought a tear to my eye to find out he wasn't happy deep down. Breaks my heart. He was phenomenal.

I loved Anthony Newley. A talent like his comes along very rarely. He was a genius. I can definitely understand why Joan Collins was so heartbroken when their marriage broke down. Anthony Newley is a very hard act to follow, no doubt about it. I always felt that behind the laughs and the jokes, there was a sadness deep inside him, which I felt gave him a certain vulnerability. Thank you for reminding us of a truly gifted and incredible Man. We won't see his like again, sadly.

Thank you for this wonderful series on Anthony Newley. The first time I saw him perform was on the Ed Sullivan show in 1965 singing "Who Can I Turn To" dressed for the appropriate theater production , The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd. His voice, mannerisms and handsome face won me over. I was only 12. There was a child like innocence and vulnerability he possessed. He was brilliant, and the songs he and Leslie Bricusse wrote were extraordinary. I believe growing up and not knowing his father until many years later affected him and his songs. Thank goodness he had a wonderful mom who raised him herself. I was heartbroken when I read he had cancer. All these years later, I still love him . Love you, Anthony.😇😇😇

Hi Michele. I'm glad to enjoyed this short tribute series to Tony. He was truly one of a kind. I have many uploads on my channel. One of my all time favourite's is the (1960 The Most Promising Newcomer) This TV special went out live and really show's the variety of Tony's Talents. I can see at the begining of this show, why he was offered the lead role in the movie "Alfie" if you haven't seen this show before the link is as follows. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c8voLx9ek2k.htmlsi=USchsNQw-RLAiwmU Kindest regards Kenny

Please Note; I was very upset to find when I uploaded this video that there was a 3 minute section of Tony performing, ’The Good Old Bad Old Days” RU-vid made a claim on behalf of "Bowie: The Man Who Changed the World" (This is Ridiculous) I have been informed that if I didn’t remove this section various countries such as the UK will not be able to view this upload. I had to let Y/T trim/Butcher 3 minutes from the video, which they have done. Along with the narration, It really was an interesting part of the story. I could have started a dispute but that would take 4 weeks to resolve, therefore not allowing me to air this video on the anniversary of Tony's passing. I apologise for this but it was out of my control.

@Nospater You’re so right about algorithms very bizarre. I’m not sure Tony was upset about Bowie my guess he didn’t know who he was (Really) When Bowie was starting out Tony would have been working flat out in the US and by the time he was successful the Newley Bowie connections had faded. We did have a conversation in the nineties where Tony mentioned a singer and after a few minutes I realised it was Bowie. I mention in my Blog the time Tony phoned me to ask who Morrissey was, I told him and asked why, he told me he had been asked to present him an Ivor Novello Award as he was a fan a dedicated a song to him. Tony attended the award and did the presentation, if you see the video he still had no idea. He often surprised me with some strange questions. He also phoned me to ask what Eastenders was as he had been offered a part I told him and he loved the short time he was in the show especially as Barbra Windsor an old friend was also in the program, he was offered a full contract but at the same time found out he to unwell to take on a long term contract Kindest regards Kenny

So many omissions especially his truly great performance in the “Small World of Sammy Lee” as well as his performances in the Green Room at the Cafe Royal Regent Street London. Yes, Tony was a very complex man with a dark side however, he was a major talent and the UK can be proud that he was one of their own.

Hi Stephen I do agree with you, there are many omissions, but with such huge amount of material to choose from it’s almost impossible to to include everything. I have however uploaded on my channel some 20 other Newley videos with some rare footage also showing the many side of Anthony Newley. I hope you get the time to see some of my other uploads. One of my favourites, which shows his amazing early diverse talent is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c8voLx9ek2k.html Kindest regards Kenny.

@@denton115 Thank you for the feedback Kenny I believe my initial response was out of frustration that Newley’s talent has not been given it’s full recognition (possibly even a posthumous knighthood). I was never lucky/privileged to see him live however, there are many stand out pieces for me and as previously stated The Small World of Sammy Lee is one of them. Besides being a very good film with acting of superb class namely Robert Stephen’s Newley’s part fits him like a glove and if someone hasn’t check out the musical score as well as the cinematography which is first class. Finally as I could wax lyrical about Tony for hours However, I saw about 10 years ago in a very small pub theatre in Kensington London “The Roar” it truly fascinated me as the ensemble players especially the main ones were great and I had no trouble imagining Newley in the role of the downtrodden little chap once again - although I always thought that Norman Wisdom must have also been splendid in the role but as we know that didn’t quite work out. Well I content myself in playing A.N’s albums every day. I especially enjoy After Today and even although slated a few from “Heronimous”. Oh! yes I just remembered I did see Tony live in “The Good Old Bad Old Days” at the Prince of Wales Theatre London. I also remember a friend in my youth who worked for a PR or film company as a runner and did a lot of duties for Tony. Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. Thanks again.
@denton115
@denton115 Год назад
@@stephenvincent4989 Hi Stephen Thank you for your reply. Sorry for the delay in answer you, I have had the flu type bug that has been doing the rounds. I think a posthumous knighthood would be well deserved but it would take something like a movie as you mentioned to to get people realise the huge amount of talent Tony had and what an influence he was to so many artists. That sounds like a great night at the pub theatre you went too and I love the idea that small groups are still working to keep Tony’s music and memory alive. I really wish the family members would do more but they do very little, but still enjoy using the Newley name, sorry if that’s sound a bit harsh. But Sacha’s book book I think really damaged Tony’s name. He talks about his terrible early years and to gain publicity for his book what he accused Newley of was unforgivable. I would just add, I cut his comments out of my recent uploads, but it was interesting that when he talks about Heronimous, he says “I don’t really remember too much about it I was so young I just remember my mother keeping me out of the sun.” Mmmm. Anyway, like yourself I could go on and on about Mr. Newley. Kind regards Kenny, keeping the memory alive.

@@denton115 Yes, I too would like to add my thanks to you for the sterling work you are doing to keep Anthony Newley out there front and centre. Hi Fay. For some strange reason, even though I had used this whole clip before in another video, this time RU-vid edited out the middle section, which had some interesting narration saying it was a David Bowie peice of music. If I didn't agree to their edit they would have deleted the whole video. I could have started a dispute but I wanted this upload to been shown on the 14th of April last year.
