Are you a mind reader? I have this exact setup but with iNav on but getting waypoint missions to have the wing fly around the field on its own loaded onto the F405W is a pita so I've been wondering the last few weeks how easy/difficult it would be to put Ardupilot on it and use that instead, I'd love to have the ability to send the wing up, put it in mission mode and have it fly figure of eights round for half an hour while being chased by quads then land by itself when the battery drops to s certain point, and I think Ardupilot can do all that, so you must be able to read minds as this is the exact series I was hoping you'd do lol.

Lee, I started out this RC/drone hobby with a Pixhawk and Mission Planner and have never gone the iNav route, so I am not iNav savvy. I am actually using a Matek F405-VTOL FC board, not the F405-Wing . . . in prepration for that series to start. However, do I need to flash the flash the Matek FC with arduplane using iNav, or once I download arduplane_with_bl.hex to my computer, can I flash the Matek FC with Mission Planner . . . instead of iNav? The Matek documentation does state that F405 VTOL board comes preloaded with iNav. I am hoping that flashing the FC board with arduplane using Mission Planner will just erase the pre-installed iNav, but I don't want to brick the board. Do you have any advise?

Great video. Very helpful But I am facing some issues, Every time I try to update using windows 10 pc or flash arduplane firmware on Matek f405 wing FC, INAV fails and show the log "failed to open serial port" I have tried impulse RC driver fixer and zadig, still I unable to flash the arduplane firmware. Please suggest what could be done to solve this issue.

I don't use Windows 10 here, I'd recommend searching for that error in the Betaflight forums as I know others will have solved it already and the issues with drivers and Win10 will have been seen with the larger BF user base... best of luck!

hello please i need help. I have the latest version of ardupilot on a Matek 405 wing with a buzzer that has a built-in battery and the three connection cables, but I can't get it to work, it only beeps when the board has no power, I have it set to Channel 8 and if I put it on the plate instead buzzer does not beep, and if I put it on servo output 8 it beeps all the time. What am I doing wrong?

I have a Kakute F4 V2 controller and I am thinking of loading ArduCopter on it and developing a 8-10" quad possibly for long range use. Are there any show stoppers with the Kakute and ArduCopter?

I'm currently setting up a Kakute F4 V2 on a ArduRover project.. no issues so far with it. GPS, Telemetrie, RX Reciever all work fine witht the Kakute.

On my mission planner, for rc configuration, none of the bars are moving. I checked that receiver is absolutely connected (constant green light), transmitter is connected (mode 2), battery disconnected, yet the green bars arent moving. Can you please help fix that? using a Matek H743, TBS Tango 2 transmitter

That is one of the things I'm planning to look at once it's flying. There are loads of spare UARTS here so it shouldn't be too tricky (he says - touching wood for goo luck!)

hello, I'm finishing my first wing (ZOHD orbit) with the FC MATEK F405-WING, but as soon as I plug it the beeper starts beeping, the motor also and never stops beeping. I've double checked the connections and they seem ok. I'm using a DJI air unit with DJI controller, it works ok, but the beeper keeps beeping... Any ideas about the why annoying beeping? Flash with INAV 5.1.0 P.S. - the wing is a second hand buying thank you

Will you be doing a video like this with either the f405 wing v2 or the f405- vtol? I ask because I hear the pin assignment has been changed to be proper now. I suppose you could just do the parts of the video which are relevant and have changed from this video.

hello, i bought a f405wing with r9 mini ota card plug all correctly. but the servos are jitter and have latency its impossible to flight have you an issue ? maybe 0.5 second to response ...

@@Painless360 i try too calibrate the ESC in Mission Planner of Arduplane (FC.F35 lightning) In The ESc calibrate TAB (window) at the bottom i cannot change ESC settings ,ESC type etc.. ?? and when i hit button ESc calibration then the error appears ..set param error..etc !.... Update. maybe i found something my channel mapping seems wrong i will put throttle on channel three.. and try again.! OK Motor is running now .. thank you

my esc has 3 wires, this thing has S1/gnd or S2/gnd. can someone explain this please.

Check out the wiring diagram for the FC on the Matek website. They are for the GND (black usually) and Signal (white usually) wires. If your ESC has a red wire too - dont connect it.

Hello, noob question sorry... The Ardupilot gps config runs the RX to TX3 on the FC but Matek says the VTX needs that TX3 pin. How did you install your VTX? Thanks, Great vids

Ideally you need to perform the compass calibration in the are you intend to fly in away from any sources of interference...

Hi Lee, do you have a video series for getting started with Ardupilot on a inav board, something like the matek ones which seem to have targets for both inav and Ardupilot? I have a 650 size quad currently running the old DJI Naza lite FC, I want to try Ardupilot on it because they say that's better than inav for multirotors. Wondering if you have a video on this or a series?

This series you've commented on (and one other on an Omnibus board) are the two on the channel. Both for planes but the setup once flashed is the same as the Pixhawk 2020 series... Best of luck

I just noticed in your video that when your in mission planner you chose com 3 in dropbox, I don't have any com port options in that same dropbox, I've tried 2 different PC windows 7 pro and windows 10. Any advise will be appreciated

The COM port will be whatever the ones appears as on your computer. It will probably be a different number. Check out the PixHawk 2020 series for up to date building tips and tricks..

Hi Lee, I hope you are doing well. I have tested F405 on a wing and worked fine but having great difficulty getting ride of Red EKF status. In Ardupilot documentation they mention FS_EKF_Thresh parameter but I am unable to find this in Config. tab on MP. Any idea how to fix red EKF status? In the EKF status window "Velocity_horiz_off" and "Pos_horiz_abs off" are red. BTW, I don't have compass installed, just GPS. Thanks

I'm not sure. I always use a Compass in Ardupilot.. Search in the full parameter list to see if its in there. From what I've found online it's an issue with low number of detected GPS sats. Let me know if you get it working... Happy flying and best of luck...

@@Painless360 Hello Lee, So this is what I learned from the Ardupilot support team: Arduplane FW does not have FS_EKF_Thresh parameters nor GPS_HDOP_XX. Only ArduCopter FW carries these parameters. I also discovered by chance that the Chibios (BL) carries various communication protocols such as communication to serial devices (OSD, Yaapu, Radio, etc). How I discovered all this? I had updated my Pixhawk with Arduplane FW along with Chibios from ArduCopter. And once I did that all my serial devices stopped functioning. I tried changing parameters and nothing worked. So I went back uploaded ArduCopter FW and Chibios, ensured everything works and than uploaded Ardplane FW without Chibios. And it worked perfectly. Now I can turn off some of the errors I was getting in EKF on Pixhawk. I have yet to try this on Matek F405 :)

isn`t there an ardu configurator so that u can flash ardu software into the firmware with it? or u can flash anything using i nav configurator ?

The firmware flasher can be use dto push any firmware onto a device In DFU mode. They don't care if you load it locally.. Happy flying!

I honestly wouldn't. Get yourself an SBUS Rx, it will work a lot better..

I can't get my throttle to work. In radio calibration it shows my throttle input fine and lets me set limits. Then in the next menu, servo channels, the throttle on channel one won't move. Other servos are working. What gives?

On my 4th flight I connected in the field to Q ground control on my phone. I changed one flight mode. Then about 2 minutes into the flight I had a brown out and luckily just a light crash. Now my esc won't fully initialize and my F405 won't connect to Mission Planner or QGC. I switched esc and no luck. Any ideas as to what I can do?

I re-flashed the firmware and can now connect to MP. The new ESC still wont initialize. It just beeps continuously. Any ideas?

Hey! Thank you so much for all of the information and help that your vidoes offer, it is much appreciated! Now, this ardupilot problem has me and all of my flying friends (some of whom relatively experienced with ardupilot) absolutely stumped. My motor simply won't spin. I have tried all of the ESC protocols in ardupilot and no matter which I choose the esc will never give the two flight controller initialization beeps. It gives the first 3 bootup beeps and I know the ESC is working because it was originally setup as an aileron output in ardupilot so it spun up the motor whenever the plane was moved. As soon as I changed it to a motor output through mission planner, it just doesn't work. I am using a Spedix BLHeli s esc with a matek F405 wing running the latest version of arduplane. Please let me know if you have any ideas! Again, thanks!

Some ESCs will not initialise if the PWM value doesn't do below a certain point. I'd suspect that the low throttle (THR_MIN) to a little lower to see how that goes. ardupilot.org/copter/docs/set-motor-range.html should help.

@@Painless360 Thanks for the reply and I suspected that may have been your answer as the default setting appears to work in most instances. I had the hardware setup in INAV and working fine after I found out that the output from the Openlrsng Rx was a NON inverted output and with advice from Matek got it working on the R2 pin next to the SBUS pin see my video here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0dvt9C9-ISY.html Now exactly the same hardware and wiring will not work with Arduplane and I am thinking it has to be a setting problem as PPM works just fine but nothing with SBUS.

@@Painless360 Thanks I did view your video and am progressing nicely thru this now and have all but "LOGGING" problem cleared to get ARM. I have tried two different no brand SD cards so far one 16gb and one 4gb and still problematic will try some others and see what happens although some of the guys in the RC group are speculating that the SD card slot could be suspect on some boards too!

Plug in the USB cable while holding the DFU button and flash with the 'no reboot' option selected.. best of luck

DFU switch on the FC will always get it back into bootloader mode.. Best of luck

So far it's very nice board. I wanted to know if a usb telemetry module work with this board and how it's possible to connect into it for us that we are not having these DX9 radios. (i am using a FS-i6) and for now i am trying to not step up because i am kinda bugged restricted.

@@Painless360 Sorry for the miss understanding. What i meant was how to connect the 3DR modules like the Holybro 3DR 433Mhz. Because on my case i am using a non-telemetry radio on my sailplane and i have a set of 3DR modules sitting on my bench. :)

Component placement is critical for the CG as there isn't much space to move the battery around if you use the strap.

@@Painless360 i was thinking about gluing Velcro on the wooden battery tray and extend the Velcro strap so it passes through the hole that is closest to the front and the one that is closest to the back so i can adjust the battery position. This would help to bring the CG forward, but not back (which is more likely the problem when using and HD cam on the nose). Looking forward to see your solution :)

It depends on how familiar you are with things like Betaflight. See my flight controller software comparison video from a few months ago to see what the benefits of each are.. I have build series for all of them..

Thanks again , I finally got my f405 flashed with inav thanks to you, but on last step , ardupilot will not connect I get messages mavlink not detected, nothing changes as I tilt and spin board, please advise.

What troubleshooting have you already done? Com ports? Making sure Mission Planner is set to 115,200? Reinstalling the latest MP?.......

I've did some troubleshooting,I have the 115200 set, reinstalled latest version of MP and using port 3 on p.c.. still no go when I click connect it just times out. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I'd delete the device from device manager and connect it again -sounds like a driver issue. Best of luck!

Quick note - before you get too far the Bootloader will need to be changed. There is a problem with the one used in this video and I've a video out on Tuesday that talks about it. You can see that video now in the playlist - it's No. 3..

Lee I remember I clicked the "STABLE" version during this video so in part 3 you're saying I need to click on "STABLE 3.9.7"? I just wanted to make sure. The most up to date one I see is "STABLE 3.9.8" so as of today there is no fix yet. Also are you able to put a speed sensor on this FC AND have your GPS/Compass installed as well?
