I love this album, and I'm *obsessed* by the song "not enough violence". It's textbook 80's goth/alt rock, yeah, but he does it sooooo good. Nails it completely. Gotta love the weird guy. It feels like heresy to compare him to Zappa, but it's not that far off, honestly.

Because there can't be anything "post" about pop because pop never declines in popularity, hence the name. Post punk and post Rock both developed after the genres they originated from started to decline in mainstream popularity

you are all being a know it all that don't seem to know what you are talking about. Pop is a broad term that can be ANYTHING that is arranged well with catchy memorable melodies and good changes that someone could sing along with or get stuck in the mind. Has nothing to do with being popular.

Post generally means it's like x genre but with inclusion of some other aspect associated with another genre. Of course there's no real meaning to post, it's just what people came up with after the fact. It's a catch all term and can easily be applied to pop

Not really, I've seen a lot of people praising this record for the most part except Tiny Mix Tapes....but they also gave the new Christopher Owens record 5 out of 5 so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Pom Pom is easily one of the best albums of the year though! Incredible stuff.

Simon Mitchell Not to get into too much of a debate here, but that's just a lot of hip hop in general really...so I see where you're coming from but also TMT as well. I think RTJ2 is one of the best hip hop albums of the year, but it does have it's fair share of misogynistic lyrics...even though that "dick in her mouth all day" track tries to take away some of that male aggressive tone by including Gangsta Boo's verse...it is still a little on the nose I guess. Then again, I enjoy Lil B too so what do I know? =/

pom pom provides everything I love about music in one listening experience: big hooks, colorful sounds, sweet love songs, amazing grooves, gloriously jarring weirdness, absurdist humor... there's something on here for everyone. He's a genius in his ability to synthesize influences from his encyclopedic knowledge of pop music and transform them into a new modern blend. Whenever I'm confused about my identity/art, I put on "White Freckles". As soon I as I hear that first "she got them at the tanning salon", I feel centered; he's so confident in the eccentricity of his sonic persona and it's incredibly inspiring. Of all the artists who've received the Zappa comparison, Ariel takes the cake in my book!

Lipstick is actually a old song. It was called shower me in lipstick & it's from a album album, that you sadly can't get anymore. The version on Pom Pom is 100 times better then the old version. I believe there was another song on this album that was on another old song of his. It was mostly just a sample, but I'm pretty sure lipstick is the only song that was old. I think negative Ed was the old song that was sampled.

Your first two minutes of this review are pretty much exactly how I've felt about Ariel since 'Here Today' (except that I didn't like that nor 'Mature Themes'). Been listening to him since ~2003-4 and the newer records bored me. Nice to hear that he's back to being playful and weird and interesting. I'll be getting this on the strength of this review! love this album. who cares what pink says in the papers. many truly great artists are idiosyncratic and inscrutable. although in contrast to pink, zappa was a class act politically and in discourse (despite the portion of his work that is arguably sexist or homophobic), i think pink is inevitably more post modern, and as a result more likely to indulge in irreverence and manipulation as opposed to sincerity or conviction. i won't argue with the fact that on the surface and based on what he's said that he seems like a pretentious jackass. but i love this album. i'd like him to make more albums like this. im willing to forgive the fact that he said something stupid because i appreciate the way he deals with concepts with the gloves off. this is what i believe artists are supposed to be like.

Nice seeing the Jean Michel Jarre album in the background. His work on Oxygene and Equinoxe seems to forshadow a lot of electronic acts like Aphex Twin and Autechre, and he isn't talked about enough these days. Consider one of those albums for a classic review, perhaps?

great review, with you 100%. Unlike the previous album, Ariel kind of "delivers" the whole Ariel-Pink thing masterfully and coherently on this one and makes it both accessible and interesting. It's full of energy, great songwriting, sounds like a best of album.

so I'm totally digging this album, and I get a real sense of authenticity from it. I went into this album knowing nothing about Ariel Pink and when I looked at some videos from this album, it almost ruined the sound for me. the sound makes me think about neon lights and rolling vertical bars on a CRT TV, and the videos just look like modern hipster non-sense. the disconnect between the music and the visuals hurt my head. would it have been too obvious if he went with a nostalgic style in his videos? i honestly would have preferred that. needless to say, I will be enjoying this chef d'oeuvre as far removed from his videos as possible. thanks for bringing this great album to my attention, Anthony :^)

Pom Pom is so diverse that I can go to it for just a couple songs and then depart. In a mood, pick a few songs. Love it. Just wonder what can follow it.

This is probably my favorite Ariel Pink album, Round and Round and Symphony of the Nymph where my 2 favorites from the previous records, on this one I'm going to have to give it to Black Ballerina.

AP is a changed man this year. That seems to be the case every year, right? His new sound definitely holds onto his past, but jumps a bit more forward with some cleaner recording and instrumentation. The past two albums, with all this cleaned up and rather straight-ahead repertoire, make me wonder if he'll ever go back to cassette.

So Captain Mantano, So I'm this old guy who doesn't listen to popular music of any genre, though, was listenin' to a Public Radio interview of John Vanderslice of Tiny Telephone, he mention Ariel Pink so youtubed name and found your review. It was thoroughly engaging intelligent, articulate and generous to the Ariel Pink.I listened to it all

I've been listening to this album almost every day since it came out. I can't get enough, it just keeps getting better with each repeated listen. Ariel Pink is a fucking brilliant songwriter.
