Now that the Coyotes have seemingly played their last game at Gila River Arena - what’s next?
In this episode I go into the history of the Arizona Coyotes to show their rocky history on and off the ice as they head into ASU next season for the next 3-4 years! At the time of taping this episode they had yet to sign a deal on the new arena said to be built in Tempe.

it's also worth mentioning that Ellman and the Coyotes also owned Westgate, the big retail and entertainment center next door to GRA, it never met it's full potential. the parking lots on the west side of the arena were all going to be built out with residential space and offices. when the economic downturn hit in 2008, the plans were put on hold. the property went into foreclosure in 2011, and ownership was given to iStar the same year. it was later sold to to Bob Parsons, the founder of GoDaddy a couple years later in 2018. Glendale was screwed from the get go.

Obviously the Coyotes are at a crossroads like they were when they tried to build the arena in Scottsdale. If they can convince the city of Tempe to approve this one, they will instantly be right where a majority of their season ticket holders are. Not to mention the city is much bigger than Glendale, which sits in the middle of nowhere. The reason why the NHL has kept the team around after all this drama is that they truly want to see if they can succeed in a city/arena that sets them up for success. I know it’s frustrating for a lot of non-AZ fans, but this needs to happen in order to make the ultimate decision to leave or not a clear one.

Alex Meruelo, worth an estimated $14.5 BILLION, already persuaded Tempe City Council to give him what my conservative father calls a “sweetheart deal”; $500 MILLION in tax breaks over the next three decades. It’s up to Tempe Residents to make the decision through their ballots by May 16, 2023, hopefully by voting NO on Props 301, 302, and 303 to prevent the city from giving him _50% of our sales tax, 75% of our hotel bed tax, 23% of our property tax, and 100% of TWO NEW TAXES_ consisting of a Developer Imposed Surcharge, which is an up to 6% tax in Tempe’s Entertainment District, and CFD Assessments, which are from a special taxing district created to _authorize Meruelo to impose additional taxes on Tempe businesses, residents, and guests_ if these propositions are approved by voters. The deal would also allow him to move the Coyotes to another location right when his property would finally enter the tax rolls. I personally think it would be great to have the Coyotes build a new arena closer to the heart of Phoenix for all Arizonans to access and enjoy, I have fond memories of going to their games as a kid, but Tempe residents shouldn’t be screwed over so bad to make this dream a reality.

The interesting aspect coming out of the sale of the Coyotes to the League was that they kept the rights to the old Winnipeg Jets name and branding when they later sold the team to Renaissance. This is why True North were able to rename the Thrashers as the Jets when they relocated that team to Winnipeg and why the Jets can use the old Jets 1.0 logos and jerseys for specialties and throwbacks.

Watched a game there just before the pandemic. Noticed most of the fans were Canadians on winter vacation. I saw as many oiler and Toronto hats and jerseys as Arizona colours. They were just like me--obviously hockey fans who can't afford to see their own team at home but will watch an NHL game in an NHL city--even if their team isn't playing! Excellent commentary BTW. Move the Coyotes to Quebec City!

It seems the only SunBelt expansion teams (not a relocated team) that started off with building their own fanbase, kept it and stayed successful in their markets are Tampa Bay, Anaheim and San Jose. Phoenix made the playoffs their first five seasons there. So they came in competitive and the fanbase didn’t stay hot and loyal. Tampa Bay started and stayed relatively competitive but didn’t make the playoffs until their 4th season. By then they had enough stock built with their fanbase they stayed successful at the gate even in times they struggled on the ice. Winning the Stanley Cup in 04 probably helped to cement that fanbase. If Phoenix won a Stanley Cup we might have a different discussion.

It has been documented that the Coyotes were set to relocate to Winnipeg (not Seattle) if a favorable lease agreement was not made in 2010 with the city of Glendale. The NHL and True North of Winnipeg had already set the conditions for the purchase and relocation to Canada if Glendale didn't give in. So the NHL had a gun to the heads of Glendale city council. Glendale city council gave in to the NHL's demands and thus had to make very difficult decisions to reduce library services and fire services to make up the shortfall. True North went on to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers the following year. Also FYI: The Winnipeg Jets began operating in 1971 in the WHA before it merged with the NHL in 1979.

If the Tempe City Council and the Tempe Chamber of Commerce reject the Coyotes’ arena proposal, team owners Alex Meruelo and Andrew Barroway will have to sell the Coyotes to a Salt Lake City-based ownership consisting of Utah Jazz and Real Salt Lake owner Ryan Smith, actor Zac Efron, “Dancing with the Stars” alums Julianne and Derek Hough, singers Donny and Marie Osmond and former Jazz Dancer and “Let’s Make a Deal” model Tiffany Coyne for $950 million, including a relocation fee of $195 million following the 2022-23 NHL season. As a result, the Coyotes will relocate from the Phoenix area to Salt Lake City to become the Utah Coyotes and play at Vivint Arena beginning in the 2023-24 NHL season.

It just means ASU gets to put the sponsors on the ice, and the Yotes aren't allowed to have their own on the ice. Hahah. Great attendance is pretty laughable. Show me a link to record setting sellouts or if they even were in the top 20 attendance in the NHL throughout their history. Glendale backed out of the lease agreement because of their financial instability. Revenue streams weren’t working in any scenario - hence the multiple changes in ownership and bankruptcy. You pointed out 4 things out of almost 100. Seems like you have a skeleton of a rebuttal but lack any actual facts to prove the Coyotes are a success on any level. Sounds like I’m just offending your biased coyotes fandom. Show me something ANYTHING proving their success. They’re always on the bottom of attendance. This whole video shows an organization that’s in complete disarray and now they’re playing in a COLLEGE ARENA OF 4,600 SEATS!!! A successful Coyotes organization would be able to navigate all their issues to make sure they could at least stay at Gila River until their new arena THAT HASNT EVEN BEEN APPROVED YET, is built. All I spelled out in this video are all facts - ending with my opinion. I can’t fit everything in this video and I already prefaced the video saying that. Otherwise it would be an hour long.
