Quick update on the Atlas 10" Metal lathe restoration project. In this exciting episode, you witness the heavy de-greasing and hand work needed to thoroughly clean the old bed and rusted ways. Most parts are cleaned in this same way.
PLEASE NOTE I'm missing some video of the taping, priming and painting of the bed; camera lens broke due to a 3 year old. Had to use pictures for final results.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

I've done the electrolysis on a few things. I enjoyed going through each part one at a time... slooooowly!

Nice video. I would use a honing stone on those ways 2 clean them before I lapped the Carriage (and Gibs) in.

Good idea. Thanks. There are a few boogers on edges that need to be knocked down too.

I restored an old atlas 10f that was completely rusted. I used electrolysis rust removal with a kiddie pool and a battery charger. All the rust and grime came off with a towel. You should give it a try! The bad rust pits on the ways just ended up being little pot holes that hold oil. The tailstock will slide like it's on an air hockey table.

"little pot holes that hold oil"? NO. They will be little pot holes that hold dirt and grit mixed with oil. Why? because they are little pots as you said and are below the way wipers and thus the way wipers can NOT remove the grit. If I had pitting that is that bad I would super clean it and then fill the pits with a metalized epoxy such as JB weld. PITS ARE BAD! ~

May I ask what color and brand paint you used? And does it match the original? I want to paint some of the parts on my newly acquired 12" and haven't been able ti find a match. Nice work!

nice job, althought it looked pretty dangerous with the electric sander near that water bucket.

Try to be careful. Taking an extra .0001 or so in certain areas from sanding can cause further issues later on in the trueness of the machine. Essentially the carriage and tailstock may not rest evenly. I'd keep this in mind with all the parts you restore.

Thanks. Doing my best as I go... only white scotch pads and some pent oil at this point..

Dave H. It's not sand paper. It a light scotch bright pad. The sander is just for agitation.

Good job but don't use a sander you will make your machine more inaccurate. Just a hairs width off of a large can make inaccurate or not much more than that. I know you know by now. A few years ago I would have done the same thing. Anyways nice lathe I hope you enjoy it. Take care...

+Micscience you're right but it was a soft nylon pad on the sander.. not paper.. hard to see in the video.

Curt Cook - everyone should now close down and remove their hot tubs?

Obviously, the concern voiced regarding your actions was wasted. I should have simply said "You are an idiot"!

Curt Cook next we should all remove our blenders from our homes since electricity and liquids don't mix.
