Bayonetta's Original Voice Actress Calls on Fans to Boycott Bayonetta 3 

This is one of those videos that desperately needs a follow up really quickly after all the information that's come out.

I've said this in other places, will say it here too. I need more information and context before I can cast judgement. This feels too sudden for me, plus I don't like the fact she threw shade at the replacement VA. There are a few things that seems a bit off to me. I do hope she's actually telling the truth. UPDATE: This comment aged like fine wine... Holy Shit...

I'm not too sure how it works, but apparently voice actors get roughly a few hundred dollars per session depending on how they're paid. Hellena Taylor was offered a flat rate, and if I'm understanding correctly, that means she would only be getting $4,000 no matter how much or how little work she would do. This would also mean she wouldn't get anymore money even after the game started selling. I'm not sure if that applies to any royalties but needless to say that offer feels a little off, if not outright disrespectful. Keep in mind, she got this offer, *AFTER*, she directly contacted Hideki Kamiya, and that either Sega or Nintendo are the ones providing funding. Either Kamiya is being a jerk, or Nintendo and/or Sega have pulled funding which makes it difficult for PG to properly pay her. On top of this, we only have one side of the story and we should wait for more details before jumping to conclusions.

What seems most likely to me is that they gave Taylor a lowball offer that they knew she wouldn’t accept so that they could get someone else like Jennifer instead. If that’s the case, I feel like their initial statement about Taylor’s absence makes some sense, as they wouldn’t want to indicate that they didn’t intend to work with Taylor outright. Like you said though, without solid evidence I don’t think we can make an accurate conclusion. At the same time, I don’t believe this negative press will make a significant dent in the sales, as Twitter “boycotts” rarely seem to translate to significant sales decreases.

This might be controversial, but I'd like to wait for the full story (something doesn't feel right about it). I remember drama with Mick Gordon and his soundtrack for Doom Eternal and how it ended. Still keeping my preorder and hope it will get resolved.

I did some digging and it sounds like voice actors typically make less than 4000 for voice acting in a single game. Hellena taylor is also not exactly a well known or highly demanded voice actor so from what I can tell 4000 was not necessarily a bad deal. Granted I think bayo 3 does have more voice work than your typical game but from what I can tell 4000 may of actually been a good deal...I'd love to hear someone who is actually familiar with voice acting in games comment on this

I think she made a bad call. I get that things have been rough but she still had that role in her resume. She could have pursued more work and demanded more with the Bayonetta name under her belt. However now not only has she probably ruined all of her chances of working in the industry again. She's potentially ruined her life by breaking an nda for a boycott that isn't going to work. I think she should have weighed things more thoroughly, despite it all if she hadn't done this I think she could have pulled through and persevered with her career. Now....I'm kinda scared for her honestly.

Bayonetta games are NOT dialog heavy games. The dialog happens mostly in cut scenes. With how few lines she would actually say, that $4,000 is about 2 weeks worth of recording. And other voice actors say that $4k is reasonable. She wants money for every game released, that is on her.

Nah, man... Everybody keeps overinflating Bayonetta's popularity, and Helena overestimated her value. Bayonetta had to be bailed out by Nintendo TO EVEN EXIST past part one. Helena hasn't done voiceover work in 8 years. When the trailer for 3 dropped, nobody I know noticed she had a different voice. She was offered $250/hr for 16 hours, which is higher than the Union-mandated minimum . Luckily this backfired for her in the most hilarious way. She's been exposed as petty and vindictive, and thanks to her ludicrous call on fans to boycott, Bayo 3 is now poised to outsell 1 and 2... Can't wait to get Jennifer Hale to sign my Bayonetta Funko Pop and tag Ms. Taylor in the insta post.

Apparently the average word count for most games lies somewhere between 5,000 to 10,000 words, and that's across all characters and other text and apparently the average rate ranges from roughly $2 per word for a high end professional to $0.50 per word as a less seasoned talent, and around $210 per hour if you're a part of the Screen Actor's Guild which if you divide 4k by you get about 19 hours which I believe she has said in the past that all of her sessions totaled around 16-20 hours for Bayo 2 so 4,000 seems to be a fair rate for this sort of thing. The thing that strikes me as odd is that she's demanding a boycott over a single role, from what I can see she hasn't worked in much outside of Bayonetta in the last few years so it makes me wonder why she hasn't acted in more I mean just look at Kyle McCarley (voice of 9S and Gatekeeper) he's fucking everywhere, by my understanding that's how most voice talents stay afloat they take many roles and with the background she touts and the work we've all heard her do I see no reason that she shouldn't be in way more stuff, makes me think it might be some other factor playing into this that neither side has stated.

Taylor really using a Kamikaze tactic here to get some money because if this boycott works there really won't be any more Bayonetta for her or anyone else to voice over, an even if it does, I doubt PG or Nintendo will want to work with her ever again. That said, for the players I think it's a bit silly to boycott PG when there are bigger companies out there doing worse things and ppl really considering to screw a real game instead of the predatory excuses for virtual casinos out there ran by abusers

Not only super unprofessional calling for a boycott, but her comments about "hale will never really be bayonetta" were super toxic and directed a huge hate mob toward the new VA. She's the voice now, why shouldn't she sign merch etc as bayonetta? If there is a bayo4 or a new smash she's in, it will be Hale. She IS Bayonetta now. I hope you do a video on how Bayonetta 3 sales spiked after such a controversy, Jennifer Hale commenting on the whole situation, and a previous interview of Taylor commenting on how much time she spend recording for Bayonetta's 1 and 2. As well as Taylor not really doing anything since 2014 and much prior.

Honestly, I always go back to that classic example of the original voice actor for Frank west in the Dead Rising games where the 4th Dead Rising game, they just got him out for some reason, and a lot of people were not happy with it.

I am playing Lands of Lore at the moment. From what I could re-collect, Patrick Stewart was paid almost $3k for a couple of hours of work in 1993. She was offered $4k for the whole Bayonnetta 3 game in 2022... yeah, that seems to be in bad faith. Hopefully she can bounce from this.

Very interesting. If it's a established franchise, in my opinion, the pay should start at $10k and move up from there. Possibly a contract where you start with $4k and get a percentage bonus depending on sales. For a strong running IP, everyone deserves to be paid fairly no matter the position. We all know how much the guys on top are getting. Spread the success, boost morale, reward hard work.

I want to be on her side here. I really do. Especially as a long-time fan of the series for nearly a decade now who's been waiting on a third game since it was first announced in 2017. But there's so much that doesn't line up in these videos, and that I cannot agree with. 1. Considering the first game was considered not financially successfully and needed Nintendo's help in order to even get a sequel (which only sold 1 million copies only once the Switch version released three years later), I have a VERY hard time believing this franchise has made $450 million *without* merchandise. Not even close. It would half to be $150 million AT MOST. 2. If they really turned down Taylor to have a lower cost, why go with a name as big as Jennifer Hale? Wouldn't she cost them more? That suggests to me there's more than financials that are involved here. 3. The way she talked about Jennifer Hale just grinds my gears. As iconic as Hellena's voice is, she did *not* create the character. There were so many other people involved in the design and portrayal of this character. So throwing a fellow voice actor under the bus and saying "she has no right to say she is the voice of Bayonetta" and "has no right to sign merchandise as Bayonetta" is absolutely unacceptable. Hale is Bayonetta now, whether she likes it or not. I know she says before that she has no hard feelings towards Hale, but those statements contradict each other, don't you think? She clearly didn't know what was going on. 4. So, Mrs. Taylor... you realize there's hundreds of people who've been pouring their heart and soul into this game for the past half decade, right? Are you saying that I should set aside their job security and funds to boycott a game that I've been waiting for since 2017, just because you declined a financial offer? That doesn't seem fair to me. 5. If she really has no hard feelings towards anyone involved, why call for a boycott? Why not just state your story, leave it at that, and let the internet decide where to go from there? And why release this *two weeks* before release? Especially if she's breaking NDA regardless. There has to be more to this than she's letting on. I know this is asking too much of the internet, especially for Twitter, but PLEASE wait for the full story before making any decisions here. I could be wrong on all these fronts, but even if everything that she's saying here is 100% correct, I'm still buying this game, and I have no regrets. And there's no reason to criticize that, just like I have no reason to criticize anyone who is boycotting this game. EDIT: Also, the games sales have actually gone *up* since these videos went out. There's stuff about Helena's several videos that set off red flags in my mind First being the fact she gunned straight for how successful Bayonetta was, her VA experience (which is like high C/low B tier) and how much she was pocketing. Mind you, her union let's her work at will, so it's not like she has any kinda obligation to take that job for that pay, and can negotiate for higher or outright leave, which she seemingly did leave Second, the fact she waited for so long to make it known, despite the NDA, and the game is a week and a half away, I find it very hard to believe that this just so happened to be the exact moment she could speak on it. If she truly cared, she would've said something several months ago, back when the game first got it's first proper trailer, and even showed screenshots or some kinda evidence to back her up (doubly so since she's claimed to 'not be afraid' of the NDA) And finally, the fact she made a passive aggressive jab at Jennifer for taking over. She didn't name her outright, but definitely had some beef with her, saying she has no right to be called Bayonetta, and sign merchandise, when Helena just left the role wide open. I'm sorry, you can't bitch about someone getting the job you actively turned down Not saying PG was in the right, especially with how Hideki reacted, but I can't see this as anything else than just salty that she didn't get what she thought she deserved, and is looking to talk some shit for vengeance. Like you said, we don't have a lot, so it's hard to say, but it's really hard to not see it like that

The minerals in my computer have probably been mined with labor that has been treated immorally and most products I own I imagine have done horrible stories somewhere in the making or selling it. I love Bayonetta and I was fine with Jenn, in fact, she can voice bayo very well but like a top-quality younger peppy bayo but I grew up with Helena I love the games .shes is the mature soul of Bayonetta, Hideki and platinum crew made the body, muscle, nerves, and skeleton and very well but they're trying to make a soul that they never made. This whole situation puts me in such a bind. Because on the one hand, I totally get where she's coming from, and if anything of what she said is true, it's totally disgusting that platinum games did this to her. But on the other hand, I really really want to play this game, but I probably won't be able to now out of principle and it really sucks because I love this kind of game and I love the games platinum makes.

Yes, Platinum's being greedy here, but I will not boycott over this alone. It's not fair to the hundreds of other people who clearly worked very hard on this game. The trailers alone already show this game is going to be a huge labor of love, one that's been belated for so long (remember it was ANNOUNCED in 2017) to be refined to near perfection. This IS a niche series, and I want to make sure it does well financially so we can get more high quality action spectacle action games like it. Expertly crafted single player experiences without predatory BS in them. These things are becoming a bit of a dying breed lately. Yes, it seems Platinum made a disrespectfully low offer for the role, but the VA was not forced to work under those conditions. She turned it down, as is her right. I do think companies should value their talent more, especially outside Japan. And even if Hale does a phenomenal job, the product will be lesser without Taylor's voice. But that's just one role of hundreds that go into a game. It's not enough to kill my desire to play this game and financially endorse other games like it.

The timeing, the fact she doesn’t specify hours or negotiations, the fact they got bigger actors in this project who are all staying, and she hasn’t really done anything in years like her last role is in 2014. Sean Chiplock said on Twitter he got $3k from Nintendo for his work on Breath of the Wild (he voiced Revali, Teba and the Great Deku Tree). He may not be as known as Hellena, but Zelda is Nintendo's biggest IP. This seems also very low, so I have no problem believing Taylor got offered $4k for a lesser known third party IP

I feel like this story has potential to reveal itself in the same way Terrence Howard got replaced with Don Cheadle. We're given an idea, but we likely won't see further elaboration until some years for now.

This is very similar to what is happening with VFX workers in the movies. The same inequality that affects everything in the world is affecting video games. A few earn a lot, but most of us are just workers who do it for coins...

I'm getting 2 now. To counter one person who legit boycotts (and to have an unopened collectors edition; I'll open the regular copy I have now preordered) because I can't stand the sorts of people who pull this crap tbh. There are countless artists, voice actors, programmers, animators etc etc who poured hours upon hours into the project for years. Why should one voice actor call for, essentially if it was a successful boycott; the end of bayonetta assuming sales were poor and they never did another entry to the series. It is disproportionate. Also everyone is just a hypocrite if they still haven't boycotted countless studio's at this point. Ubisoft, activision blizzard, probs loads I'm forgetting. But all the sexual misconduct stuff in particular I'm referencing. Theres so many moving parts and people involved in making games, who abide by the NDAs, theres likely loads of grievances we never hear about... regarding people feeling taken for granted, mistreated etc. And finally we don't know the full story, all the facts etc. We are going off very little. If you legit going to boycott with all of this in mind, I doubt you were ever that much of a fan of the IP to begin with., or you are just virtue signalling and never intended to buy it in the first place. People don't like being told to boycott something. People don't like being told what they should and shouldn't buy with their own money. This is already backfiring because people like me exist who will buy an extra copy to basically say @$@% you, I won't do what you tell me... or buy one copy of the game when they otherwise wouldn't have. Human psychology. A huge amount of the population now hates anything resembling cancel culture. A boycott of the game is trying to cancel the game, really.

I wasn't planning on getting this game anyway, I'm not a big Bayonetta fan, but I want to see where this story goes before I do decide to get it if I change my mind. Really though if her story is true, then yeah, that's a really crappy thing to do to someone, let alone a well-known voice actress. That's almost like underpaying Tom Kenny when asking him to voice SpongeBob again.

I mentioned this before, but for everyone saying that Hellena shouldn't have said what she did about Jennifer Hale portraying Bayonetta, you have to keep in mind that opportunity in the voice acting industry is not given out equally and some actors throughout their careers are only known for portraying one or two iconic and well loved characters and become very possessive of them. It's the same reason why you can count the number of times on one hand that actors like Anthony Daniels and David Hayter HAVEN'T portrayed C-3P0 and Snake in media, respectively. Some actors aren't blessed to receive offers for roles every day like Jennifer is, and these actors put their everything into the few characters they get the opportunity to portray. Jennifer has portrayed hundreds of characters over the years, and for every Samus Aran, Femshep and Ashe she has played there have been far more characters she's voiced only for the paycheck and phoned in her performances. If Jennifer was offered the same amount that Hellena was offered to portray Bayonetta, Hellena knows that nobody with any dignity would accept that amount and knows Jennifer is portraying Bayonetta, the character she made iconic, only for the modest paycheck and without the love and passion she had for the character. If Jennifer was payed significantly more than Hellena was (which is most likely the case), then the issue lies with Platinumgames and the corruption within the company. Long and short of things, Hellena feels like Jennifer as a fellow voice actress who has long strove for voice actor salary equality should be on her side on this issue and feels that Jennifer taking the role of Bayonetta is her "stealing" the character that she made iconic for a quick buck. Was what she said a bit harsh? Probably, but I understand how she feels about things and wish her the best regardless.

I'm not boycotting SH!T. I'm sorry if she feels that the pay offer was low but there's no way in hell I'm not picking up Bayonetta 3. Jennifer Hale is a phenomenal voice actress and I've no doubt she'll do just as good a job. Hell she may be even better.

Even if there is more to this story I can't help but feel Platinum has handled it really badly. Say Taylor is a bitch to work with and they didn't want her back, why even make her the lowball offer? It of course wasn't going to go down well (that's the point after all) and just reflects badly on the studio. If they just wanted a new actor they could easily have told Taylor this is a new incarnation of Bayonetta and they need a new voice. That wouldn't have been dishonest and they could, as many were hoping for, give Taylor a small cameo as og milf bayonetta. That would have kept everyone sweet and wouldn't break the bank. I'm annoyed with the execs at platinum (and to a smaller extent nintendo) for not fighting to keep Taylor on board and avoid this whole mess shame this has soured the conversation around the game so close to release. Either way I doubt this is going to hurt sales, all publicity is good publicity.

Gamers nowadays have ruined the industry so much that they have normalized buying games that are unfinished as the norm. Get out of here expecting anyone to boycott like they have any discipline besides complaining online for five minutes and forgetting. Voting with your wallet is the only thing that matters, will ever matter, and gamers have made it clear that they will take anything that the industry throws out.

I’m not refusing to buy this game because of some call to arms to right the wrongs of the world. I’m not going to give $60 to charity. I just wouldn’t want to play a Bayonetta game that doesn’t have Hellena Taylor as Bayonetta. However, the fact they low key fired her and lied about it, isn’t doing them any favors to change my mind.

$4000 is decent for voice acting a game like this. She’s cocky and it’s ridiculous that she tell us to boycot Bayonetta 3. I understand that the lady in question is in a difficult situation at the moment. To be honest, it looks like her mental health is at a low point right now. That is quite sad. I know what it is to have depression and anxiety. I hope she gets well soon. ❤
