Bayonetta 3 Don't Need No Nintendo Direct - New Trailer, "Censored Mode", and CE Discussion 

This was a day 4.5 years in the making, and it absolutely looks like it was worth the wait. October can't get here fast enough.

I don't mind "Naive Angel Mode", but what we really needed was "Naughty Angle Mode"

These fake victim journalists and game developers don't just want nudity or cleavage being censored. Localizations have been changing up dialogues for many western releases for petty reasons too. Which can mess with writing for characters. Give them an inch, they'll take a mile. I like that you address this

I think the naive angel mode was originally implemented so that they could put extended portions of gameplay in Nintendo Directs and other promotional material that might be used in more 'family friendly' contexts. In Bayo 1 and 2 the summons where bayonetta gets naked were mostly just QTE finishing moves after boss fights. But now in Bayo 3 there are extended portions of gameplay with the summons out, meaning Bayonetta is running around mostly naked for the whole fight. You can see this in the initial gameplay reveal last year. At the end of that Nintendo Direct Bayonetta summons a demon and keeps all of her clothes on, but in this new trailer she's running around mostly naked during the big demon kaiju battle.

Honestly I could also see the Naive Angel mode being useful in public because ya know its the Switch. Specifically if you're on a plane where you're going to have someone next to you. Sure it's still super violent, but it still helps a bit.

I have a different view on the censored mode. Knowing Platinum, I wouldn't put it past them if the existence of this mode is an excuse to make the game even more sexualised. Having a quick and simple censor allows them to cover their own ass (rather than Bayonetta's) for anyone saying its gone too far in the other direction. They could just say "Hey, there's a censored mode you can play in" and hope that puts to bed any complaints. Although, in reality, you do have to wonder if that mentality impacted anything else in the game we may never know about. Only time will tell if there isn't a concerted shift in tone and character.

Nintendo Knows how to Count to 3 Unlike Valve 😳

Consider that the "toning down" mindset was on Platinum's mind back when they were making Bayo 2, even to the point where Nintendo had to tell them to bring the sexy back and Bayo 2's outfits are far less revealing than Bayo 1. So this Naïve Angel mode may actually benefit the sexual nature in the end as Platinum may have freedom to go as nuts as they want in uncensored mode and then they just have to hide it in the censored mode. Case in point, the colossal Madama Butterfly is WAY more revealing than in Bayo 2 as well as Bayo 3's powered up forms have more revealing designs. Still I get the concern, I had it back in with Bayo 2. Something that concerns me about Bayo 3 is that some of the animations seem rather janky, at least when it comes to cutscene animations. Like in the new trailer when she first attaches her guns, her movements are pretty clunky.

This new feature is a surprise. With Bayo 2 Nintendo encouraged Platinum Games to keep Bayos essence and the more sexy the better. Fast forward to now it’s a clever idea, instead of giving no option they consider censored or uncensored as they probably want Bayonetta to be shown to a larger audience.

This is all I’ve been waiting for! Bayo 3 was the stuff of legends with so much silence after its initial reveal. There were even rumors of it being canceled, but it’s so nice to see it in full! I love that her demon is a Cheshire Cat as a nice reference to little Cereza’s favorite toy, and that the non-nudity mode is called “Naive Angel Mode”, that’s hilarious! Finally a mode I can use when I play a Bayonetta game around kids lol jk! I don’t see the point of it since Bayo games have a ton more things that are adult, but it’s optional. The action looks amazing as always! All and all, I can’t wait!

Figured I'd see a bunch of folks complaining about the censored mode. I can understand the concerns for censorship becoming more common, but, since this is purely optional, I just see it as a way to give players more choices. It would absolutely be a problem if the censorship was forced, like what Sony was doing for anime games for no reason. I do agree with ChiGuy's criticisms of it overall, it seems performative and an odd choice for a series like Bayonetta that seems to flaunt its sexuality (I wouldn't really know since I haven't played the games myself). Nonetheless, I'm glad he brought up that this does indeed have some value and isn't entirely made for...I guess SJW feminazi game journalists or whatever else people call them nowadays? Unfortunately don't really have much to say about the actual game. It does seem like fun, maybe I'll get the physical version of the first game to see if I'm into the series.

Honestly I plan on playing with the mode on in a much later play through. Pretty much just because bayo’s new outfit looks pretty.

As long as the censored mode is completely optional I really don't care and I will certainly not be playing with that turned on. I do find it funny with the censored mode name being called "Naive Angel Mode" as fans of the series will know that the angels are technically the bad guys :-)

I remember my excited reaction seeing this game announced at the game awards five years back. It's been a long time coming but it looks great and I can't wait for october. Not sure when the next direct will be since multiple games are going to be released now until the end of the year, but I don't think there's a reason to have one right now.

Never played a Bayonetta game, I don't know, doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'll dive in, I love good hack n slash action.

John you do realise that the Japanese collectors set for Bayonetta 2 for switch in Japan had the physical version for the original game? This September just marks the first time that a physical version of the original is being made available for switch in the west. Which again is different to what happened with the Wii U, as most of us in Europe were able to get the original separately, as part of a double pack and as part of an exclusive collectors edition. I’ve got both European collectors editions for Bayonetta 2, really looking forward to hopefully getting a copy of the collectors edition for Bayonetta 3. I’m also secretly hoping right now that we may get a Bayonetta 3 Switch system with the same design language as the Splatoon 3 system that’s getting released later this year I still think there’s time for a Bayonetta 3 Direct, maybe sometime in September?

Kamiya just said in Twitter that Nintendo never brought up any suggestions of nudity regarding Bayonetta. He also brought up how they asked for Bayo's Link costume to be even more revealing. Are you really going to keep fear mongering over possible internal censorship.

It's possible that the naive angel mode was something they added so they could have an easier time showing the game during Directs or in commercials.

I just saw the trailer yesterday with my little brother, and MAN am I ever hyped for Bayonetta 3! When I first played the Bayonetta 2 demo on the Wii U seven to eight years ago, I was astonished and incredibly impress for how it is as prior to this, the only real Hack N' Slash game that I played was The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Darksiders 2 and Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2. After playing Bayonetta 2 for the first time it become one of my favorite games of all time alongside Sonic Adventure, Metroid Prime and many other due to its fast-paced combat, balance difficulty, fluid and fun gameplay, smooth controls, interesting (tho somewhat flawed) story and fantastic boss battles, I played it so many times it not even funny, I might try to get the first Bayonetta game (maybe for the Wii U) later. As of me writing this comment, we have four months of waiting to get this game, and judge from how it's on October 28, as well as us trying to save money for me and my family to move, it's possible that I might have to wait until Christmas, but who knows. Anyways, I am SO excited for Bayonetta 3, it's been 5 years since its trailers, and I cannot wait to see what Bayonetta 3 has in store for us in the future. ;)

yeah, i was at gamestop today cause i wanted the bayonetta funko pop box thing lol. preordered and asked if there were any other versions of the game like a collectors version (i had not seen the seperate announcement) and sure enough, trinity masquerade.

I think we will definitely get a mini direct for Pokemon scarlet and violet because we only had the two trailers and it will release later this year but will be surprised if they do the same thing they did for Bayonetta 3

I'd probably switch back and forth between modes just because I really like Bayonetta's new outfit.

why would an optional nudity toggle change the entire tone of a game? thats fear mongering. it is a rated M game for adults. believe it or not, some adults don’t care to see nudity in their media. just be happy its not mandatory. hearing it was totally optional was like a breath of fresh air for me.

Just a quick comment regarding "Naive Angel" Mode, I know the whole concept of thinking you can increase sales by throwing in this censored mode sounds perfectly silly to you and me. But see...that's because you and I aren't JAPANESE. Because here's the thing. This occurred to me just last night. I have figured it out. I'm reasonably certain I know the primary reason this Mode was thrown in... It's to give Japanese Switch owners the opportunity to play the game on their commute to work, and not worry about being judged. No, seriously...think about it. Unlike the rest of the world, which appreciates the Switch for its dual-functionality, Japan really only uses it primarily as a handheld device. And since we all know that, deep down, Nintendo REALLY only cares about the Japanese market (everywhere else is just gravy to them), this sounds like a thing they'd do to buff up sales and interest from Japanese players...possibly even those who maybe DO want to try their hand at a Bayonetta game, but are afraid to take it out in public, lest they risk being labeled by their so-called "polite society". At least...that's just MY thinking on it.

Well, bayo 2 did tone down a lot of the sexyness Bayo 1 had so I don't doubt they'll do it to an extent here too. TECHNICALLY you have the Naive Angel mode in Bayo 1 and 2, all you need is select a clothing that is not umbran by design, those kimonos for example. But yeah, of course they are thinking about friendly games because they work for Nintendo, there's always a chance that Nintendo wanted these features to be there and that changed a bit of their design, but frankly, as long as they make Bayo 3 more fun to play than Bayo 2 (Which has a lot of good things but a lot of annoying things too), and the story is better and a good evolution from them, then I'm happy.

If I had to guess, we'll possibly get a Bayonetta 3 Direct in September after the general September direct. Maybe it'll even be announced in that direct

I'm pretty sure they decided not to put this trailer in a Direct is so they could show the partial nudity and language that Nintendo doesn't want in regular Directs

Im positive the only reason Xenoblade 3 SP.ED was Nintendo Store only is because of the game being shipped earlier than the full physical edition because the game was pushed forward. Still in the UK pre orders havnt even opened yet and its out in a few weeks... its confusing as hell... btw. The Bayo 3 SP.ED is already up for pre order. Much easier to get than Xeno 3

How hilarious would it be if Naïve Angel Mode was placed behind an unlock and forced you to play the superior lewd version first? I'm personally ok with this option because I sometimes take my Switch to work for when I have breaks and sometimes there are young kids that come by. I don't want to have to deal with parents bitching and whinging that the random man who doesn't get paid enough to deal with this wasn't playing a game suitable for their unsupervised child. But you're right. Nobody who is demanding this will buy the game anyway.

actually bayonetta 1 was released physically on switch, it was just limited to a special edition they barely advertised and usually nintendo bs only made like 50 of them and never made anymore, I know this i tried to get it and failed, so the physical release of 1 almost compensates for that for me

I don’t know whether it’s the art style or colour choices, but Bayonetta 2 looks a little better than this new one. I’m not complaining though. This is a day one purchase for me.

I always say as an Xbox fan I liked it the Wii U it's strange because I like Xbox more than Nintendo but I do like Nintendo and even I like to do Wii U it's weird that you did not and other big Nintendo fans

I think they did this because of Smash Bros. Bayonetta being in Smash exposed her to a larger audience so they're hoping they'll get some of them to try this game out and Smash had a much lower age rating than Bayonetta typically does. I still think it's a stupid idea though.

I'm probably going to be playing with the mode on. It would not have been a dealbreaker if it weren't there, but I'd honestly just prefer my games to not be this sexualized. I get that it's part of the appeal, but for the same reason that I groan at fanservice in anime, I think that being able to just toggle it off will enhance my experience. The Bayonetta games look fun and creative, and I'd play it even without it, but this 'is' something I do appreciate. It's not that I can't handle cleavage, but I just feel it's all a bit unnecessary. Again, I get its part of the appeal, it just doesn't appeal to me.

Its sad that sexual content has to be the big outlier in terms of over the top mature content. People just dislike seeing skin for some reason on females but never complain about males. Blood and violence never get this treatment and I find that stuff more traumatizing than seeing some sexual content

This might be a Disliked opinion but Hear me out, Some nintendo don't have this censorship as heavy as other platforms. But if something like this was a Mode you can switch on for very Revealing mature games doesn't degrade the experience the experience as long as you can turn it off right? Cause a small amount of people are going to be very angry about it so...That was just my thought.

As they have mentioned, yes, this naïve angel is optional. So I have no issues with it. If anything, and really I think this should have been brought up, is the name of the mode. They called it "Naïve Angel." I honestly believe they called it that to make *fun* of people who *are* buying the game *purely* because they want to play a censored version. Rather tongue-n-cheek of them, aint it? In reality, yeah I'd probably enable that mode if my young step sister or my even younger half brother were visiting my house and saw me playing Bayo 3. Family and all that. So I appreciate that it exists for me to play it nearby them if they happen to be around.

I am so pumped for this game! I kinda wish that Naive Angel mode didn't even exist. PEople that complain about that kind of thing shouldn't be playing anything other than E rated games. Dude, no offense, but you kinda sound like a whiner with this one. I mean give Platinum somewhat of a break, they want to sell as many copies as they can. I think they deserve to make it a little more toned down and give the option for at least a somewhat bigger mass appeal to audiences. It doesn't hurt to give the option to people who want it, lol it's not going to hurt those who want the sexual aspects more highlighted, I personal think it's a thoughtful addition.
