In Pokémon Gold or Silver for the Game Boy Color, there's a fairly simple exploit you can abuse to get all three starter pokemon right at the beginning of the game. This glitch involves taking advantage of the way save data is written to the game cartridge, and there's some moderately tricky timing involved, but if you mess it up, you can always try again.
First, start a new game and save your game at Elm's Lab before you choose any starter Pokemon from Professor Elm, then pick a Pokémon. In this instance I chose Chikorita. After that, play through the game like normal and meet Mr. Pokémon. He will give you AN ENTIRE EGG. Now bring that Mystery Egg back to Professor Elm (you will fight your rival on the way back, and the results of this battle are irrelevant to the glitch). After delivering the egg to Prof. Elm, his assistant will give you some Poke Balls.
Now go outside and catch any Pokemon. Once you have two Pokémon in your lineup, give a PokéBall to your starter and head to the PokéCenter. Access Bill's PC and deposit that starter WITH THE POKEBALL into Box 1. Then switch to Box 2. The game will prompt you to save your data.
When you overwrite your previous save data, the game will say "SAVING... DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER." What you want to do here is turn off the power after the O in "OFF" is displayed, but before the H in "THE" is displayed. If you timed it right, turn the power back on and continue your game. You should find yourself back at Professor Elm's Lab. Now take a different starter Pokemon.
Make your way to the Poké Center and withdraw your original starter Pokemon. Take the Poke Ball that he is holding, and go catch another Pokemon. When you do that, go back to the PC and deposit BOTH starter Pokemon into Box 1. Then switch to Box 2 and again turn the power off after the O in "OFF" but before the H in "THE" appears.
Turn the power back on, and you will once again be back in Elm's Lab. Now choose the final starter Pokemon and head to the Poke Center. Log in to Bill's PC and withdraw the first two starter Pokemon. Now you have Cyndaquil, Totodile, AND Chikorita at the very beginning of Pokemon Gold or Silver.
