Watching this video and remembering that Ben Shapiro's ambition used to be writing comedy films. This guy in the background clearly pitched this as a way to make Ben more endearing and likable to younger viewers, (creepy in of itself) but in the end made a perfect example of why that's impossible. Ben has no interest in fun, creativity, or happiness; he just wants to be the smartest guy in the room. The guy who knows all the facts & what's REALLY important in life. His ideal world is one where everyone does what they're destined to do (which is their prescribed job within capitalism and religious family structure) and anyone who deviates is punished. So of course he'd hate Minecraft, which spite it's Swedish Nazi origins, is a game all about freedom. You have to go through the basic steps for survival; but once you get a house and a source of food, you're free to do whatever you want. You decide what's meaningful about the game, & pursue that as long as it interests you. But Ben lives in a world where 6,000 years ago some large old man decided what was meaningful; and his only purpose is to execute his function. His soul is empty, so the game reflects emptiness back at him.

I've long believed that play is one of the easiest ways to see a person's real self. Play is vital to every social species, and how we interact with the boundaries and rules set within it show us a lot about what we value, how we socialize, and what roles we want to take up. Playing survival games with your friends is always an interesting experience because of how people will put themselves into roles, what they'll do to keep everyone going and what they want to do when they have the ability. Some people will leap into the unknown and become explorers and boundary pushers. Some people will build and fortify. Some people will focus on farming for food and supplying people with the goods they need. It's always interesting watching people figure out the rules of the space and fit themselves into it. This, too, is fascinating. Ben isn't good at figuring out the rules himself. He can't. He doesn't try to understand the world, just judges it. He doesn't try to find his own direction, just complains about the pointlessness. He needs to be directed, he needs someone above him to drive him, he needs his hand held to understand what is what and what to do. Almost like he's obsessed with hierarchies and goals handed down from people more powerful than him. Almost like he simply can't operate unless the rules are explained to him, because he's not interested in trying to learn what they are. Almost... almost like his ideology is a crutch that supports an inherent inability to be open and learn things you didn't expect to. Almost like he's an incredibly weird dude who got shoved on stage and a spotlight shone on him because he'll say that the people with power deserve it.
