The ending was so great when Dae Han approaches Tommy and he says, "to save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor within, your brother too was a great fighter and I deeply regret your loss and I offer myself as your brother".
When Dae Han approached Tommy and he says, "to save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor within, your brother too was a great fighter and I deeply regret your loss and I offer myself as your brother" meant he was truly remorseful for his actions against Tommy and his family all those years earlier. Tommy hugging and forgiving him released all the anger that they both were and had been experiencing for years.
I cant reckon how many times I had cried like a little girl while watching this movie, this scene more specifically. I cried...I cried..I cried...and till today I still have the same feeling about....same compassion so as much as a strong wake up call feeling towards people and what they do to us. Embracing someone who hurt you bad as a brother is not for everyone. The background score used in this film makes you cry !! Masterpiece film !!! whos with me?
I'm 50 today and this movie still touch me as it was when I was a teenager. I love the skill of both men but the end was unexpected. It taught me in life that there is a time when we need to just hold back, and let it go. Revenge is sweet but mercy and compassion is so much sweeter. What a movie, perhaps the best fight amd the best storyline I have ever watched.
Hahaha, me too, well 49. This movie had a huge impact on my as a teen. Watched this movie with my kids 4 years ago, and got back into martial arts because of it. Why I ever stopped I don't know.
Man, this movie just hits. You can't really explain why it's so good. It's just magic. Everything in the last 20 years has been such trash, and I don't know why. It's not the internet, it's not society, people want good movies like this no matter how ridiculous they seem. It's almost like they want to demoralize us or something. Man what a bleak future.
The Rhee Brothers are Awesome! Great scene. Forever embedded in my memory. That part where Tommy wants to avenge his brother but didn't is still so emotional for me.
what makes it sad is dae han was hoping tommy would finish him off. he had no way of defending himself, he was just standing up because he knew what he did to tommy's brother was wrong and was hoping tommy would get revenge, such was dae han's guilt.
“To save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor with it…..I deeply regret your loss and offer myself, as your brother.” A line that always brings a tear or two
I am now 40 yrs old, but why do I still cry over this? I remember when we used to watch this as a whole family. My dad was really into kung fu movies. Damn! How time flies! I'm 40?! Holy shi+!
Definitely my favorite scene of the movie. While all the other fights were ok, the techniques demonstrated by these two were amazing. 20 yrs. later, it still holds up.
The flashback scene of Dae Han killing Tommy Lee's brother, the sad music in the background and Tommy Lee's intense, laser focused stare towards Dae Han gives me shivers every time. have this DVD still.
Best of the Best was Karate Kid for grown-ups, Dae Han gave us chills as kids in the 80s, all the times we fell flat on our asses trying to emulate the jumping side-kick-to-back-spin-kick he pulls in the beginning. When he joins the good guys fighting in BotB 2 it was like seeing Darth Vader joining the Rebels.
The way James Earl Jones can predict the Koreans move and counter with the ridge hand was magnificent but the emotion that Erick roberts shows combined with the crying and almost crying in EVERY single scene he’s in is unprecedented. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Eric Roberts was pathetic, crying and yelling all the time, a horrible example of overacting, besides, guy has no clue about martial arts, let alone TKD. James Earl Jones is a fine actor, but no clue about martial arts neither, you can tell in almost every scene, should have prepared them better for their roles. Kudos to Philipp Rhee and the Koreans, bad ass performances.
The fact that Dae Han knew he didn't deserve the medal was enough to get me choked up....but his words to Tommy Lee combined with that damn sad music made my eyes downpour with tears.
Such an underrated and overlooked film that doesn't get the appropriate appreciation it deserves... Such a beautiful display of martial arts in the literal "All American Underdog Story". Strong powerful meaningful Ending and all around amazing Film 🎥.
I love how the Rhee brothers are soo close, they know/love each other. Only way the epic fight scenes between them is possible at the end of the movie. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Damn man. So nostalgic. I used to cry even as a kid at this scene. I wish they would have put the part where dae han talks to him. Even as a grown man this scene still makes me tear up a little.
Loved this scene. You can really see how well the two "work" together. They both know how to receive each other's kicks with maximum effect ... they're brothers after all so their "feel" for one another is better.
One of, if not THE greatest and most underrated karate films of the 80s/90s. I used to compete in full contact on the European circuits (Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do) and this film is pretty representative of ‘proper’ full contact karate at the time. unfortunately, it’s a lot different now, with the ‘contact’ not being so much and a lot more restrictions in place
I gotta give it up to these two brothers I my opinion they had the hardest roles of all no matter what they were able to complete this movie and still show that brotherly love for each other thank you Mr. Phillip and Mr. Simon Rhee
my favourite martial arts film ever. very emotional and im very glad im not the only one who cried.i love the team camaraderie spirit and supporting one another. they start of with differences then become a family unit. love how tommy forgave dae han. great moment. JESUS WOULD BE PROUD! eric roberts also played a very good role as the loving father..... i cried at the hospital scene too! its a shame they dont make fils like they used to. anyone agree?
Still my favourite martial arts film. I hold 3 black belts and always get so frustrated when I see a lot of martial art films and the technical side is always not quite right but this film is just so bang on the money. I watched it so many times and I never tire of this scene
good old days of 80's and 90's when you can see the whole body movement when actor does nice kicks. These days they zoom in so much that i don't know what the heck is going on and I can't really enjoy watching those beautiful kicks that may look easy but takes years to master. I did taekowndo on and off for about 10 yrs and not all the kicks may be useful in real fight but I love watching and doing that double front and back kick that daehan did at 1:40.
Even though they are brothers in real life' it is very emotional at the end of them embracing each other as more then rivals but as brothers' that's one've the reason I love this movie!
The double kick that Dae Han did at 1:42 is something I've always wanted to accomplish. When I was actively training in my youth, I spent about 3 months steadily practising it, but unfortunately, my muscle memory never clicked and I couldn't perform that beautiful technique. And now that I have physical health issues, this kick will now just be a fantasy for me.
It's just amazing how at 6:32 both the coach and Alex saw Tommy's power build up for whar would be a lethal blow...they could sense that a killing shot was what was about to happen.
The first time I saw this I was 14 and it was on late night cable on a Saturday night. The end surprised me and I cryed my eyes out. This movie is a hidden gem for martial arts movie lovers...
Shame it didn't show the ending where the Korean team put their medals over the Americans heads in acknowledgement that their win was only technical and Tommy could've won it if he'd been willing to really damage Dae Han. That was a pretty original ending for an American martial arts film, which are very rarely, if ever about magnanimity. Even better is the bit where Dae Han walks up to Tommy and tells him that he grieves for the loss of Tommy's brother and offers himself as a surrogate. Real emotional stuff.
Dae Han never grieved once about killing Tommy's brother. He was smirking at Tommy most of the time. And a guy with a guilty conscience doesn't laugh as he illegally hits his opponent multiple times. The part of the movie where he apologizes was totally contrived & unrealistic. Dae Han was a cold-blooded bastard.
@@rocketraccoon1976 Have you ever seen a bully get put in his place?? It either changes the man or makes him more angry. As there is a yin and yang in everybody. Or in other terms a rude awakening.
i love this fight scene, was in high school when i first seen it, still chokes me up like a little girl.though especially when they hand over their medals
Funny is I never cried when I was young till I got older and my empathy went through the roof of understanding Tommy's pain fear anger and why he held back, vengeance was in his hands and did something more powerful restraint the hardest despline for us martial artist. Movie is sorely underrated. A must have in the martial arts archive. Much to Phillip and Simon. 😥😥 The technical kicks were perfection. Can't stand some movies with weak sloppy kicks not this one. Them feet were smooth a boxers jab. Goose bumps.
great movie, very inspiring i study taekwondo right now and this movie makes me wanna train harder so i can go to the olympics... Philip Rhee rocks hard
Amazing you still doing teakwondo? that film was got me into teakwondo and as teenager if yoir still in touch with that guy tell him thanks from RU-vid x
I was torn watching this scene growing up. Part of me said finish the fight. He killed your big brother and made your mother cry. While the other half said Tommy don't do it man. David wouldn't want you to become a killer it's not worth it.
Yah, and Dae Han’s (Simon Rhee) ironically one of the consultants for the show _Cobra Kai_ (Ironic because Tommy Lee/Philip Rhee is the one who wrote, directed & produced All of the _Best of the Best_ films... my favorite is _Best of the Best 2_ largely because of Travis Brinkley’s Everlast Boxing trunks made into pants...
