When she asked me, I said, "No. I don't like Beyonce. I don't own a single Beyonce album. I've never downloaded a single Beyonce song. If a Beyonce song came on the radio, I would change the station." The conversation came to an abrupt stop with a record scratch. Everyone in the room looked at me as if I had told them that I bayonet puppies in my spare time. "I like Dio and Ozzy and Iron Maiden and Van Halen. I don't like Beyonce. Not my kind of music." I'm not very popular at work. Like I give a shit.

My husband who has horrifically bad taste in music made me watch some live show on DVD that Beyoncé did years ago and at one point she did a retrospective of the shit she sang with Destiny's Child and she told this self-aggrandizing story about watching Michael Jackson perform and how it inspired her to impose her aggressive method of over-singing every word to the world. Now, I regularly break out into imitations of it when he's doing everyday things like pumping gas or cooking and I lapse into a random retrospective of a shopping trip to Target.
