It’s a consequence of social media and the evolution of styles previously being reactionary to normative limitation. In the 20th century people would mostly dress a certain way, and that would be heavily promoted in movies and television, which would be regionally limited in their exposure, and which would further reinforce these “norms”. Then new fashions would emerge partly as a reaction to that. That was based on a limited model of information dissemination. Then the internet comes along, and social media follows not too far behind. Within two decades, there IS no more limit on information dissemination. With that, the reinforcement of style conformity goes out the window, as does a historicism of style. It can be any “decade” to the extent that you can expose yourself to a particular decade through the internet any time you want. You don’t have to be beholden to contemporary fashion simply because there is no such thing as “contemporary” anymore. This is what makes woke conformity so fascinating to me, because it does come from trauma, but it’s as if due to that trauma the woke folks want to perpetuate a conformity they no longer have to endure. It’s a reliving of trauma through perpetuation. Ironically, it’s the closest we’ve come to having a *new* conformity in 21st century America!

I was born in late '89, basically 1990, and I feel the same way. We are the forgotten generation, but we were also the luckiest. We grew up in basically the most perfect time in human history to be a kid worry free and enjoy life, and we are the bridge between older generations and those born after 99. I think the closer you got to 99, the less lucky you are. The party was over with 9/11, but the wild west of the internet and early chat rooms was awesome and we were on the forefront of using a new technology. Social media really was a huge change to the world's culture, and it's popularity lead to the monetization of the internet, and gentrification of culture. Everything is the same everywhere now, and that's all children born after 2000 will ever know.

yeah, those are the last people that saw the end of social hierarchies of the schools of the past. Nerds, jocks, the prep girls, anime fans, pokemon fans, goths and emos were all still there and separeted each other. Now they grew up tried to morph into one social group and pretend they all get along and understand each other. Phones ended this separated social group hierarchy that people neturally put themselves into. Everyone is so focused on trying to get along and are pretending to be woke, that they all forgot they fucking hate each other, and this animosity is now boiling over in marriages and relatonships that don't work. I was in marching band and I knew my place in the social hierarchy and I hated the pokemon kids in highschool. Pokemon kids were at the bottom of the ladder.
