Blood Sugar Experiment - Fruits Bad for Blood Sugar? Part 2!

I'm back with another blood sugar experiment! I'm testing to see this: which fruit is bad for blood sugar? Which fruit is best for blood sugar? Which fruit can I eat with insulin resistance? Let's go!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

I do enjoy your videos. I wanted to know what happened since you haven't posted in awhile. Only recently started to watch your videos. I am 62, not diabetic but monitor my blood sugar to see how foods affect me. The worst food for me is white flour, so I have almost cut that out completely. Also stopped sugars and refined foods. Have fruits , maybe 1 a day or so. Also noticed that a a little rice that has been refrigerated has very limited impact on my blood glucose.I love rice! Thank you. You have somewhat influenced me in this whole blood sugar monitoring thing. I am always anxious when I am going to take a BG test. lolzz

Straight to the point 👍 I'm surprised at the results given all the different opinions on fruit: on keto fruit is evil, but body builders eat it as snacks to lower their body fat %. And then you have Robert Lustig, who in fairness said that the fibers in fruit binds up the fructose and that is what prevents it from "killing you immediately!!!". It's exhausting trying to get to the truth, and everybody has a book to sell me.

Its the fiber in the fruit that must prevent the spike, eating an orange vs drinking orange juice. People drink way too much fruit juices and think they are doing something good for themselves.
@Hertz2laugh
@Hertz2laugh 6 месяцев назад
No, it's the fact that the kind of sugar in fruit is fructose, not glucose. Unlike glucose, fructose goes straight to the liver instead of the blood. Eating fruit contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
@EA-ck4so
@EA-ck4so 6 месяцев назад
That is what I used to think. But how to explain that a banana she tested in one of her previous videos spiked her blood sugar so much? The banana was large and slighly overriped. I am wondering if in an overriped fruit the ratio of fructose to glucose changes?. @Hertz2laugh

Great informative video! As you do, I don't eat fruit by itself, I either have them in a bowl with coconut milk and nuts. Other fruits like mangos, I eat them like Mexican people do (they add lime juice, salt and flaky chillies) When I eat mangos by itself my glucose, goes to the roof. By adding an acid element, it really cuts the spike on my blood glucose.

One thing to consider with fruit is that it usually contains a mix of glucose (which will raise blood sugar) and fructose (which should not impact blood sugar at all). Higher fructose fruits will not raise blood glucose as much as one might think just based on how sweet they taste.

Hi I am a New Sub who appreciates your approach to testing the glucose results of foods. I also had gestational diabetes with my first/only child that revealed insulin resistance. I was about 40 year old when it was dx, I am now 60 yo and my a1c has climbed by about 10 full points in these last 20 years. I am not very active but have noticed that exercise absolutely benefits my glucose levels. I have also moved more to a low carb approach where I eat 50-100 total carbs per day - I know my glucose would improve on a fully keto or carnivore diet. If you are willing to share, I would love your exercise program us. "what I eat in a day ... Week" etc would also be interesting to know.

Fruit sugar includes about half fructose and this complicates the finger stick measurement Finger stick blood tests: Typically measure glucose levels only. They don't directly measure fructose. Fructose first goes to the liver, where it promotes the synthesis of fat . Therefore, a finger stick may not give you a true measure of what the sugar in fruit eventually does to your body.

The fiber and polyphenols block any adverse affects from fructose. Also when calories are controlled for studies show no difference between liver fat with glucose and fructose

I just found your channel, and Im glad I did. Question: did you do the experiment with "resistance starches"? Is when you cook rice or potatoes or pasta, then you store them in the regfrigerator for at least a day. Then you heat them up and eat them.... and supposedly, it won't affect your blood sugar numbers... Or if you haven't done that experiment yet, could you do it?

So he decided to eat 5 bananas again and measure every 30 minutes and you saw a spike at 30 followed by a crash before recovering back to baseline. Could be an interesting option to measure every 30 minutes for the first 2 hours and once more on the 3rd. I know it’s a lot of pricking but might be more insightful.

But when you tested for both the orange, strawberries and grapes, you started off with fasting blood sugars BELOW 86. On the prior fruit testing video, your fasting blood sugars were above 86. If you read Dr. Gabriel Cousens's book called, "There is a Cure for Diabetes" he goes into great detail why keeping fasting blood sugars below 86 are so important! So if you can find a free pdf, read it. Then go ahead and test these same fruits again when one day you find your fasting is above 86, in the 90's like in the prior video. I don't think the activity of doing household chores and getting kids to school would cause your glucose to be higher after a night of fasting. I suspect the body responds with higher blood sugar or insulin from being more acidic, caused by being stressed, dehydrated or also from being in the full or new moon phase, or when you're feeling run down or sick. Try to drink at least a cup of water every hour in the morning before breaking your fast and doing these tests. If after eating I really want to lessen the effect of the spike in blood sugar, I used to get on the rebounder and after only 5 min of gentle rebounding, with both feet flat on the mat, my blood sugar would immediately go down almost 30 points every single time. It was a joy! ( But i injured my knee from too long rebounding sessions, cuz more is better, right? so i can no longer rebound and now exercise is a big pain.)

Question for you dear, as long as if you are keeping your carbs as low as possible and counting, does it still matter the type of carbs you eat on a given day?
@RK-tf8pq
@RK-tf8pq 6 месяцев назад
Which type of carbs you eat has significant effect. For example, whole grain flour and refined flour from the same grain has different blood glucose response. Even fiber is a type of carb, but it does not raise blood sugar, in fact, it blunts the glucose response of other foods. Carbs are not inherently bad (glucose is our body’s preferred fuel), the issue is how high the blood sugar goes. If you eat more protein than needed, excess protein is metabolized to carb, so even without eating carbs, one can get metabolic increase in total carb load. Only thing is that the conversion from excess protein to carb is a slow process, so the blood sugar increase is not noticeable (similar to eating whole carbs such as vegetables and some fruits, where blood glucose increase is not noticeable or is quite small). My diet is based mostly on whole grains, vegetables (vegetables are mainly carbs), beans, fruits, and some nuts and seeds, which is a predominantly carb-based diet, and I have an excellent health (that is my diet since birth and I am not very young). In fact, scientifically whole food plant based diet (which happens to be high in high fiber carbs) has shown to actually reverse insulin resistance in diabetics (as per NIH studies). That diet has also shown to reverse plaque buildup in the arteries as per studies done at Cleveland Clinic and at the university of California at San Francisco, and also brought people off medications. Carbs got a bad reputation because most of the carbs in the modern diet are refined carbs, which, of course, are not good. A study was done at Stanford University, and found that most people on a keto diet were not in ketosis, since the diet also contains excess amount of protein (which converts to carbs), and it is difficult to raise the fat percentage beyond certain level without having excess protein.
@Michal_Sobczyk
@Michal_Sobczyk 6 месяцев назад
@@RK-tf8pq 1) Glucose is not a preferred source of energy, it's just one of the sources. 2) Fiber, as you stated is a type of carb but it's not digested like other food but fermented, the same as among other apes, cows, sheep etc. Main products of fermentation are fats. 3) Your high carb diet works well for diabetes becaue it minimizes the Randle cycle, the same happens on a low carb diet. The worst diet for diabetes is a balanced diet. Fat + carbs = diabetes. 4) Plaque buildup you mentioned is a result of the Randle cycle. Any diet that minimizes the Randle cycle will result in lower blood sugar, lower blood pressure, less damage to arteries and as a result less plaque. 5) A keto diet is not a high protein diet so there should be no excess protein, only the necessary amount. I assume the authors of that study defined incorrectly what a keto diet is, as it is common in research, for example there are studies that claim a diet consisting of less than 30% of "calories" from carbs is a low carb diet which is laughable. A keto diet requires less than 20g of carbs per day and a typical ratio of fat to protein is 2g : 1g. Provided that no sweeteners are used (which cause sugar problems) ketosis is achieved in 4-5 days in everyone. At the above mentioned ratios natural satiety mechanisms kick in and going above with protein would cause nausea so people stop eating. A high carb diet on the other hand doesn't produce proper satiety mechanisms and requires constant refeeding during the day so without discipline people overeat.
@RK-tf8pq
@RK-tf8pq 6 месяцев назад
@@Michal_Sobczyk A high carb diet produces satiety if it is whole carb with a lot of fiber and has good quality of beans and other starchy foods with good fiber level. On such a diet, it is easy to get full before you get enough calories. I only eat two meals a day of high carb diet (breakfast and dinner) and don’t get hungry. With regard to protein, the daily body requirements for an average person is about 56 grams (that includes most part of bell curve, meaning actual requirement for most people is even lower), and above that it would be converted to glucose. It is quite difficult to get to such a low level of protein on a keto diet, because one cannot get enough calories unless they increase fat, which increases fat to protein ratio, and makes it more difficult to sustain. The authors of the study took keto dieters from across the country, and looked at their fat and protein content, they themselves did not define it. With regard to plaque reduction, there is only one diet that has scientifically shown to do so, and that is whole food plant based diet. The data with actual imaging evidence of plaque reduction were published in the prestigious journals like Nature and New England Journal of Medicine. Glucose is a preferred source of energy, because as long as glucose is available, it is used first, not other sources. And when other sources are used (when glucose is not available to meet the need), as soon as you consume glucose and get it to blood stream, other sources are not utilized.

Hello, if you're asking if you can eat low carb all day and then eat 30g of milk chocolate or ice cream, then I'd say yes it matters what type of carb you are eating. Different carbs have a different impact on your body and blood sugar. I don't always practice what I preach for sure, but whole grains, whole starchy vegetables, legumes would be the carb of choice for me!

@@thegoodenoughmama yes, awesome. Consider doing 10 days of water only fasting, drinking only pure water and nothing more. Than refeed slowly, and show us if and how it effects IR. Also show us your sugar during WFing, refeeding, and a month after refeeeding. A long term project but worth the patience. The main idea is to check if not prolong (and 10d is not a prolong) WFing improves insulin sensitivity and how long it stays improved if it does

I do not understand your motive behind these claims?????!!!!! Either you need to change your doctor or you probably enjoying the publicity from your RU-vid presentation which DOESN'T reflect your TRUE statues of your blood sugar level! Thanks for sharing your opinion. For your information, I was diagnosed with insulin resistance from a reproductive endocrinologist, who I had to see when I had trouble conceiving. I've done multiple OGTT tests and an insulin assay test, and had gestational diabetes twice. So I most definitely have metabolic dysfunction. Your accusations about me wanting publicity are wild but I understand that you are upset and speaking from a place of not knowing my history and personal story at all.
