One thing I love about this show is the build up to the simple line of “London” it’s delivered like London might as-well be the land of Mordor or the Death Star. Fitting considering the time period and the slow burn build up of western society taking the world.

If this is set in the 1600s, the fire of Japan we see here and the Great Fire of London weren't far apart from each other. No true cause for each fire has really been disclosed so I bet Mizu will cause it in Season 2.

I kinda love they let Mizu be the worst. She’s responsible for the great fire of Miereki just to try and kill Fowler. It’s claimed that fire killed 100,000 people. That plus all the countless samurai she offed just to get to him. A slow burn if you’ll excuse the pun as in the first episode she was somewhat restrained and held herself back from killing. Really shows how the path of revenge destroys everything. I don’t know if there’s any coming back from this. You can even see in her expression a brief realization at what she’s done. I hope they address in season two if the lives lost in her quest were worth her revenge,

@@Mi-Jung_Kim-tq2bl It’s not about innocence or guilt. Revenge is self motivated. At any point Mizu could make the choice to stop. She even did as a part of her character arc. By continuing to pursue Fowler and the other white men at all costs, she’s also chosen to destroy anything or anyone in her way regardless. By making that choice, and continuing to in every step she takes towards it, every death as a consequence of that was avoidable, whether it’s the innocent people dying it that fire she caused, assassin after her life, or samurai just doing their job. You could make arguments for each individual killing, but that’s also not really the point. Much like Kratos destroying Olympus at some point you have to ask if the revenge was actually worth the cost in lives lost. Most samurai she killed likely had families who are just as justified to seek her out for revenge thus perpetuating a cycle of carnage. I really respect the show for not pulling punches on this too. There’s often temptation to make the protagonist seem like a hero, but Mizu clearly is not.
It's a weird line though. I get wanting to be critical of the actions of Europeans in history but the "That's your white half showing" comment is weird; as if the series hasn't shown Japanese people being cruel, brutal, bigoted and untrustworthy throughout the entire show.
@BingleFlimp I think what it’s trying to imply is that white colonizers were known for killing and burning everything in their paths for the sake of conquest. Japanese were also bad during this time with their xenophobia, but the British were ruthless with their rape and murder all across the world.
Absolutely loved how he kept on calling Mizus eyes pretty until the end. It's very likely she will be seen as a unique beauty in london. Cant wait for season 2
Kenneth Branagh did incredible movies, believe me, there's even better stuff of him to watch. It's like calling Christopher Lee's voice acting in the last unicorn the highlight of his entire career.
Honestly, Fowler is perfect for this series. His motive for shooting the Shogun in the face? He didn't respect him. It's iconic. The Japanese hate him for that race, and love him for the money he brings in. Not one of them had any idea how he suffered under the English. Not one of them knew he wasn't a Christian. Fowler learned every Japanese art , and decided he despises them all. Thematically, there's no way he isn't Mizu's father, and lying to buy himself time. Their character arc is identical.

Well, I got good news for you: There *is* going to be a second season! And from what I read from one article, the husband-and-wife creators are hoping to have four seasons *at minimum!* Granted, I don’t know when the next season will come out or anything like that, nor am I sure what kind of story they’re going to ultimately tell that will need at least four seasons, but it’s exciting nonetheless!

taking in consideration how season 1 focused only on Fowler, i can see season 2 focusing on Skeffington and season 3 on Routely. Season 2 will probable be focused on London, which makes me wonder if the secondary characters from the first season will still be relevant in some way, or will the series focus on Mizu, Fowler and a new group of characters in London? is also interesting because Mizu will need help to move around, she don't speak the language, she don't know the culture or land, and now fireguns will be a bigger problem. So we have a situation were Fowler become a ally and help her or she need new allies. it will probable see Mizu behavior in a society that is most white people, and where her blue eyes are not what make her different, see how she feel about her "other half" I can easily see Skeffington as a rich businessman that go to japan to build a local structure for his business and once this structure was complete he returned to London. i suspect that Routely will be "the father" the show give to much focus on her blue eyes. so i can see him as the final antagonist in season 3, the question is how they make Japan relevant again, they need Routely going back to japan or something like that, Maybe as a politician trying to start diplomatic talks or something like that?

It makes Mizu's past so much nore interesting now, because Fowler who has killed tons of his kids already, REMEMBERED Mizu as shown with his "little miss" comment. Likely because she was the only possible kid whose death wasn't confirmed but also ran away with a paid maid. Which begs the question of who exactly was her mother? Cause it had to be someone with money, a maid and someone notable enough for Fowler and other Japanese to pay for her death. My theory is that Mizu is the daughter of the previous administratir of Kyoto. Basically the predescessor of Akemi's father who died unexpectedly, (possibly because of Daichi's maneuvering that saw him rise) which is why the money ran out. But the question remains of who were the men sent to assasinate her in ep 2?

Honestly i saw from an artists that pointed out that her mother could possibly be The Shongun´s Wife aka the Empress from the Ito clan HAS A VERY SHARP AND STRICKING similar facial features to Mizu same for her younger son, wich brings in the real question of, what if her mother was a powerful or important figure? WHAT IF SHE ISNT REALLY DEAD and equally asked for Mizu´s execution and to never show her existance ever came to happen, what if possibly neither of her possible father´s have came to know of her existance until probably a little later and maybe requested to know where are her weabouts to eithe rpossibly hide her or kill her? Fowler specifically said that Mizu´s fake mother aka the maid who was hired to hide her, so its more possible her mother demanded to kill her as an infant while her father probably wasnt aware of her existance until later on.
I did think about it, but came to the conclusion that mizu being in london(the west in general) for nearly a decade made no sense. And she'd have learnt restraint when it came to fire. But, since I'm not the show's creator your theory may very well happen
I was checking dates out of curiosity. If the timeline lines up to history's and the last episode of this season is in 6th of March 1657 (the date of the Great Edo Fire) and we assume the trip to Britain is going to take around 9-10 months, Mizu might arrive in early-to-mid 1658, the year of of Oliver Cromwell's death and close to the ultimate downfall of Cromwell's protectorate in the middle of 1659. Coincidentally when Oliver Cromwell died there was a gigantic storm/hurricane in England, so that might as well be the climax of next season if they want something to match the fire.
Mizu in London will probably be like Samurai Jack in Aku's future. Major fish out of water dramedy vibes in hostile territory, but with less oil blood and more of the real stuff.
The way he describes him and Violet living loud makes me believe that Rowley and or Skeffington might be those kinds of villains who are cold calculating and vile it be a nice switch up from the Sadistic hedonistic Fowler to one or two more reserved psychopathic villains
I'd like it is one was a complex and close to sympathetic villain. Did shitty things in his youth and now deeply regrets it. I like moustache twirling cartoonish villains as much as the next man but a bit or moral complexity would be nice.
Mizu knows that she’s no hero and how much she is willing to sacrifice. However the fire was largely an accident as she only ment to burn the building she was in and taking Fowler out of the equation is definitely a good thing. She is absolutely an anti hero and I’m interested to if she continues to become better or worse as the show goes on.
Well that’s an interesting time in London’s history. It was a republic from 1649 to 1660 with Oliver Cromwell in charge until his death in 1658. I wonder if Mizu is going to play a part in Cromwell’s death in the next series.
When the series started and they say there were four white men at the time of Mizu’s birth it’s a reference to the four European countries trading in Japan at the time, England, Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Eventually the Japanese turned the Spanish and Portuguese away from their ports due to their incessant missionary work and growing concern of their colonialist interests in Asia especially after the conquest of the Philippines. Fears which were stoked by the English and Dutch because the English and Dutch didn’t want competition in Japan and because anglicans and mennonites don’t really proselytize. So I thought it’d be interesting if Mizu was hunting down an Englishman, a Dutchman, a Spaniard, and a Portuguese man but they’re all English
Man I am so excited for season 2. I know we will have to wait a while but with this level of execution, this show has tremendous potential going forward.

Confirmed her father is Routly. Skeffington is sure tall but he cant be her father since Skeffington doesnt have blue eyes. The only answer why mizu is tall because her mother is also tall
That would make sense narratively, but Skeffington could still carry the recessive blue eye gene and have dark eyes. That said, I hope the show, unlike the characters, will be aware of the fact that, outside of extremely rare cases where pure-blooded Asians have blue eyes, in order for Mizu to be born with blue eyes, both of her parents should have the recessive gene. Her mother is most likely also mixed-race

I am of the mind set fowler wants to play the long game here, Skeffington and Routley might be tied to the reason behind the tudors and I suspect he served them as a way to get close enough to kill them. But something backfired, they caught on and made sure he cant leave, dousing his ambitions, now he finally gets to leave, he is like a wild beast unleashed. My suspicion he is, hes gonna get revenge on one, and be killed by the other, allowing some kind of poetic justice and setup for a bigger fish.
As much as she wants to deny it she does need him. She’s traveling to an unknown land filled with different cultures and laws. She’s going to need a guide to survive all of it but when she’s done she’ll either die or succeed.
I’m really interested to see what part of the story we’re gonna get…and if we get to see how Mizu killed Violet…when Fowler recognizes her she seems to get angrier and even cuts him off before he finishes speaking - “So, you’re the one-“?
Despite the fact that I enjoy this amazing writing, there is one thing that bothers me as I rewatch it recently. The speed of the fire spread is kinda unrealistic because while Mizu fighting with Fowler, it's impossible that they could survive in the fire that long, you know 2 or 3 minutes, normal people could die immediately. I know the writers tried their best but I think the ending could have been done better than this, but I still love this show it's made me watch it again multiple times.

I was wondering if she'll be looked at for being somewhere that's currently isolating themselves from the world. I feel it would be a better twist if her real father is actually a decent guy and not just another villain to kill.
I hope Mizu finds love again when she reaches the UK next season. Personally, I hope she falls in love with an Irishman who's about her age and is as funny and heartwarming as Jackie and Michael from Waking Ned Devine. Someone with that kind of temperament could help her come to terms with her European heritage.

But Violet was the person in charge of the opio trading, and Mizu kill Violet some point between the end of her married life and the first episode. Violet is normally a female name, and in one of Mizu's nighmare/flashback we see a scene of Mizu killing a blond woman, is very short and quick, we only see the Blond Woman making a surprise face, before she was killed by Mizu. so i know Violet was supose to be a man, that is why Mizu is hunting the white man, because they can be her father, so why kill a white woman? because 1-this woman is the one seeling opio and destroying lifes, she is also in a way responsable for her "mother" selling her out to get money for opio 2-Mizu already decide to kill the 4, she was already there, she probable only find Violet was a woman once she see Violet face to face

Good show but there was way too much plot armor for Mizu. I get it’s a bit fantastical but some of the fights and injuries she endured were a bit ridiculous. The show did an incredible job with combat the first half of the series and then dropped the ball IMO.
CobraKai is hardly the most realistic or accurate to real life fighting either. Sure there's some main character plot armor but what IP besides One Punch Man does not include it? I thought they incorporated more realism than prior samurai/kung fu animes--fighters get winded & tired while guns actually kill. She's the certifiable psychopathic Jason Voorhees of "samurai" & gone "mind over matter" with hate, revenge & anger keeping her body alive & mostly functional. Not the healthiest situation but it makes for an interesting & fun show.
I don’t understand why people complain about stuff like this when the shows goal obviously isn’t to be completely realistic.. I mean a magic meteor fell from the sky and mizu turned it into a sword did you really think the fight sequences would be entirely realistic after that? And they need to show her recovery quickly so the plot doesn’t slow down
@@vi-ys1ul Just my critique. Besides the sword it doesn’t really have a fantasy element to it. But even with fantastical combat (without superpowers), you need to keep it grounded, find the balance. I just think they put her in way too many situations where she was ambushed, stabbed, or guys 5 times her size got a hold of her. It can get to a point where you ruin the villains because they just seem inept rather than threatening. I still really liked the show, but I think a number of combat situations could have been written better.

The Japanese people in this show can be evil and terrible as well. Even Mizu is pretty evil. When she gets to Europe trust me when I say there will be good and bad Europeans. The show is too nuanced to fall into “white bad not white good”. It’s a historical drama, everyone is pretty evil compared to modern day morals. The only two morally good characters are Ringo and the sword smith.

It was obviously sarcastic and in a mocking way. Fowler is well aware of the Japanese's views on white people, and especially Mizu's own disgust and hatred for her white heritage, so it make sense for Fowler to poke at that side of her.
