I've seen several dynamometer tests on both cars and the results were as follows. C8 430whp - 450whp. The M4 competition's was always between 509whp - 536whp. In short, the difference in power between the two is quite large and the result was obvious from the start, since in addition to being AWD, the BMW has an advantage of more or less 60whp
@@smollkitteh1337 Not in this case. This exact comparison was done by Edmunds with similar results. Speculation is this is not a 503hp BMW, more like 600hp.
@thiosemicarbizidebenzoylal2921 I agree with that. Most of BMW cars are heat soaked before doing their testing, which results in lower hp on dyno. I had a 2015 RC350 F-sport and that thing was alright fast, with 306hp, butttttt.. when I test drove the 2018 N55 Motor M2 with 19,000 miles, holy shit, that thing was definitely not 365hp as advertised lol. Felt more like 420-430hp and 450lb torque. It's really not that bad for $40,000 used. I'm also considering the m2 competition "advertised" 405hp/406ft-lb. It's probably more like 450 or 475hp.
German auto makers do give their real horsepower numbers, they just do it in the worst possible conditions. So this M4 will make it's advertised 503 horsepower at 15,000 ft and 110 degrees with 90% humidity. What it makes elsewhere is a different story. They do this so you are guaranteed advertised horsepower no matter where you are and what conditions you are in.
Wow what a great race! Interesting to see how two very different cars (but similar on paper) perform. Man those beemers can pull… (they make more hp for sure) the way BMW tune those engines is amazing
, so I go to the fish market, buy and pay for 2 fish 🐟, when I arrive home, find 3 fish on the bag???? In this case, thank you bmw for giving me more for the money
That BMW does not have enough of a power and tq advantage to negate its roughly 250lb weight disadvantage. Point is, its definitely underrated. Its probably around 503whp not crank
. It has more than enough power to compensate for 250lbs considering that 250lbs is a decimal if were talking hp/weight ratio. It makes 0 difference in acceleration.
The weight varies depending on the configuration and packages. An M3/M4 with carbon bucket seats and carbon ceramic brakes can be considerably lighter than a fully loaded car without those. Also, it matters where the weight is distributed. C8 wheels are bigger and a few pounds heavier.
Nice comparison! It didn´t shock me at all, I expected that outcome! C8´s lower mass centre is giving it a real advantage from a both RW start. Roll race M4 walks away and M4 in Xdrive mode is not comparable at all. Despite the M4 might have more power than factory claimed but more weight than the C8, it cannot keep up in the roll... Guess at least the sound competition will be pro C8
In awd sport mode, it’s faster than the c8 in all aspects. RWD mode does not put the same power/torque down. If you want to compare RWD platforms you compare the standard comp.
As we know the German monsters BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Audi/VW never give the real numbers when it comes to horsepower and torque. Plus the transmissions are usually dual clutch with the capability to tune it to shift even quicker. Doesn’t really surprise me here. I knew this would happen
Great video! Could you make the text of the specs of the car bigger? And show both at the same time, with both sets of data following the same syntax? Would be much easier to compare that way
I mean it's only 0.5 seconds apart from the Plaid's 0-60 time, and the M3 actually does the 60ft and 0-30 better than the Plaid. A tuned M3 is faster than a Plaid. They are already in the 8s with proper setups
Not surprised today i just raced a c8 today from a 40 roll it was about 45 degrees today and from a 40 my Ats-v was making a little more boost than usual it was neck and neck all the way till like 150 then we ran into traffic! From a dig he would have had me !
@emekaiheanacho274 idk it might be closer than you think. The m4 walked from this corvette and technically on paper the corvette should've won. Since its near identical power plus being lighter. Even in RWD mode the M4 was hawking it down the runway!
@@emekaiheanacho274lol don’t be sure about that. Most 0-60 tests have them neck and neck and we know BMW are the ones that don’t overeaggerate HP. Example most dynos have the 660 hp zl1 and c7 zo6 only 70 wheel hp difference when on paper it’s supposed to be 160 crank hp more than the m3/m4 comp.
@@FordPickUPRed in vancouver at sea level i see tuned g80 m3s and m4s run 9.8 to 10.3 all day its insane used to live in the rockies only hypercars would run mid 10 s
Actually, they are usually dead on the money on a proper dyno, not a tuner dyno which produces massively inflated figures. It's a testament to BMW engineering, the cars are always on the money in terms of power. This is what you want, precision engineering, not shonky engineering with cars making different power. The only manufacturer that seriously underrates their cars is McLaren who always quotes worst numbers, they also like BMW though reliably produce the same numbers from car to car.
I expected that outcome as someone noted the RW dyno numbers., but it didn’t sound like you were using launch control on the C8. In general your BMW driver seemed more aggressive.
Sam, funny how the comments are mostly people saying unfair race. But me, for the first time in a while.. thought it was a great race. Well done. That guy knows how to drive his vette, and you did well in the bmw.
I outran a friends 2022 M4 Competition in my modified 2006 Lotus Elise. It strange racing because I am in an archaic 6 speed manual against a all wheel drive modern vehicle. I did not blow the BMW away, but from a stand still my old school traction control would bog down terrible and I real the M4 in. I was really surprised how fast the M4 was, very impressive, but there was no real driving. The M4 just stop and gone. Me bouncing off the rev limiter a few times. Just fyi my Lotus runs mid 10’s, but a shift mistake the BMW was gone.
Another great test. However, I heard both cars reving up before taking off in the XDrive drag race. But I only heard the C8 reving up on the RWD drag race. That make a significant difference.
Doesnt sound like the c8 was being pushed. My c8 sounded more thunderous when pushed hard. Also, was the c8 a couple or convert? Launch of c8 was not good at all. Need to see the tach and speedo too. Helps remove bias....
Two different torque curves. The turbo in the bmw builds it's full torque like 2k rpms lower and quicker than the vette so I knew what the outcome would be. Power number alone aren't what would have made it equal, the way the power is built and delivered is what makes or breaks. Moral: N/A vs N/A same power ratings or Turbo vs Turbo same power ratings will be a closer race.
I sold BMW’s for 8 years, two things are true 1: BMW understates power 2: the transmissions are superb. On a side note, the AWD system shuts down and reverts all power to the rear at 100-110 mph.
@@show2imec8 Eray would dog the shit out of ANY bmw production car. Same with the c8 z06. Same with the c7 z06, same with the c7 zr1 lol. Cut the crap. 2023 M4 CSL is so slow! That it did 7:15 at the Nurburgring. When the corvette did 7:13 back in 2015 with the c7 z06 with a manual transmission by a car magazine journalist. C8 z06 ran 10.2 bone stock by Will farmer, go look it up. C8 ERAY isn’t out yet but savagegeese recorded the c8 Eray doing 2.2 0-60. Hagerty recorded a c8 Eray doing a 10.4 on non prepped surface. C7 z06 ran 10.4 by will farmer 100% stock. C7 zr1 ran high 9’s again by Will farmer (AKA professional drag racer) and again STOCK. Cut the crap.
I own a Supra, at least for a short while longer. It will be for sale soon, but as far as performance, it moves. It has HKS exhaust, but even before that, I thought it has to be making more than 400HP!
I call bs. That Corvette was shifting way too early in all the runs except for last. You could even hear the guy clicking the paddle shifters. And then the Corvette beats the BMW at the end? You guys are so gullible. 😂🤣
Them turbos suckin through them turtle nostrils show ya what it do up top, nice Vette but i would take the last year model vette with a manual an normal a v8 for the more aggressive sound
I have an M4 and although I've never raced a Corvette, I'm not sure how the M4 would do against a Z06. I'm guessing not near as well lol. Maybe an M4 with a tune could beat the Z06 but not a stock M4.
Technically you’re wrong - they both advertise crank hp. Probably different standards. The real killer is that the BMW is making way more torque down low and through the rev range.
@@hpickettz34 in Australia at least and the vast majority of countries - all power numbers, and pretty much all manufacturers use crank hp (it’s a bigger number for a start and an industry standard). Some use DIN or SAE, JIS, bhp, PS etc. but fundamentally similar. Density altitude will be a bigger determinant than the difference between some of the international crank measurements. Whp is flawed as this could be measured by Mustang Dyno, dynamics, or wheel hub dyno and takes into account even more variables
C8 has advantage of mid engine. More weight on rear tires and comes with wider tires than m4 stock. Also NA motor with lower torque and less torque at lower rpm, so bmw rear tires gets blasted with way more torque and at low rpms, further giving it a hard time putting power down.
@@MikeyG003BMW does not execute traction control better than Chevrolet either. They will never put their power down as well as any high performance *gm* vehicle because their engineering does not exceed that of the Corvette racing team or Cadillac V-series performance division.
@@G-Ratedlol how dumb do you sound? The front engine M4 beats the mid engine stingray on Nurburgring, so much for your unstoppable corvette racing team. Oh yeah and so does the m4csl against the ZL1 1le on Nurburgring with less cylinders and power. Bmw engineering>
Because using RWD will disable launch control and limit the power. BMW officially said many times that RWD mode is designated for drifting only and not drag racing, but everyone is now doing a drag race with the RWD mode.
I think the production could be a little better on your videos. Maybe the camera placement or sound not really sure. Just giving honest feedback. Keep at it!
I owned a C8 Stingray and a BMW with the B58 engine, I will tell you BMW sand bag the true HP on all their engines. If BMW says 503HP, that is at the wheel not at the crank. I have first hand experience with the S58 engine, and I tell you is a beast.
FYI those M4 Comps make 520-530 hp to the wheels whereas the C8 makes 440 hp to the wheels. So the hp advantage is not slight. its big. So the BMW claim of 503 hp is 1.one wheel horse power and 2. it is understimiated for business puposes.
Yea ai suppose German engineering truly shines when compared to *base model* American engineering. Lol. Price and trim level should be considered when you’re comparing the performance of someone’s top model (M4C) amongst their lineup to someone’s base model (Stingray).
U serious? This isn't top of the line. A m5 or m8 is. Also these are the same price. A z06 with dealership markups are going for 160k same with the eRay
I have been saying it since the beginning, the base C8 should have came with 520-530hp stock out the door. The 495hp is a joke in modern cars and the small block definitely can crank out that type of power with no problem.
@@G-Rated yup, taking my whole family on trips while smoking c8’s at the same time… it’s pretty nice. Oh and the m4 comp xDrive beats the c8 on the reference road course (Nurburgring) too (7’30” vs 7’28.5”). Better bring the ZO6.
@@Bimmer_Bill Yea, we’re going to bring the ZO6 and maybe the E-Ray too just to humble you down, because everyone here knows whenever *you* say “C8” you’re actually talking about a base model Stingray ($65k sports-car) - which is the only Corvette that will lose a race to a $90k BMW. 😂
@@G-Rated lol you’re trying to compare a purpose built sports car to a family car? 🤣🤣🤣🤣wrong, 🥲🥲🥲🤣btw the m4 CSL is even faster than the track specific Camaro zl1 1le despite having 120 less horsepower. The mighty Eray runs the same 1/4 mile as a bmw m5 cs (10.6), the z06 is actually slower yet you say any bmw doesn’t match up? The m5cs is a four door family car too! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 GM cars at a joke compared to European cars on the track (name your vette and I show you a faster production euro car). Stick with corvette price point, you peasant
No need to do the M4 in RWD mode... no one actually races in that mode and it's not the same as a RWD M3/M4 racing. The Corvette did better than I thought though
@@bobbyspanino6874actually no multiple drivers have managed 10.9 stock with a c8 so it does have a little more room. But either way the m4 is sandbagging in horsepower numbers, everyone knows when you dyno an m4 it actually makes more power than bmw claims, the real crank hp numbers is around 600hp range do. This m4 will not stand a chance against the e ray corvette.
