In 2004, the Chiba Lotte Marines were nearly merged with another team as NPB attempted to restructure itself.
In 2005, the Marines took the Central League champion Hanshin Tigers and absolutely dismembered them on the national stage. Here's how it happened.

Quick thing, I messed up talking about the Marines place in the standings in 2004. I forgot to change the winning percentages and games back when I copied over the template. Whoops. The W-L-T records are correct tho. Sorry.

22:34 Props to Hanshin for trying to prevent every run and *playing the infield in*, down by 8, but that is some next-level desperation...

It just kinda adds to the "wtf is Okada doing?" element of this series. Man just got tactically spanked.

After watching this I totally understand the belief in the Colonel Sanders curse. Definitely has some Cubs/Red Sox vibes(prior to them both winning recently) or even Mets vibes. I truely feel for Tigers fans after watching this. Absolutely brutal series. As a lifelong spoiled Yankees fan this brings back memories of the nightmare 2004 ALCS (also happy to see Shane Spencer continued his career in NPB) Sometimes teams just get hot at the right time like that. I hope the Tigers win a Japan series soon. There fans deserve it.

Jeez Louise if you still have issues with that Hanshin video you’re still working on, that story you mentioned about half the Ouendan being banned for life sounds so fascinating that almost needs to be a priority.

It's definitely on the list, but it would largely be an adaptation of an article from the Marines' English bogger at the time, I feel like I'd have to get the go-ahead from her before I make it.

"A lot of this was thanks to the Buffaloes tanking after losing Ralph Bryant and Hideo Nomo" Hahahaha, soooo true. As a Kintetsu Buffaloes fan, I really appreciate the perspective of that team that you've brought to light in your videos, and everything is just ... right on the money. Great work, man.

Even as a Yankee fan I always liked Bobby. He was like that crazy Italian uncle that some how was put in charge of a baseball team.

To answer your question on why Kataoka-senshu and not Shane Spencer, righty-lefty matchup. So much for that advantage.

Hey Gaijin, Just wanted to say I'm really loving your work so far having found your channel a little while ago. As it happens you and I make similar types of videos, and we're both working to bring a lot of NPB content to youtube in English. That being the case I thought I'd reach out see if maybe you ever wanted to work together on a video at some point! If that's something you'd be interested in let me know! Either way keep up the good work :) looking forward to more content.

Hey man, love your all your work (esp. with the history of all the NPB teams) but I think this may be my favorite of all the ones you've done. It invokes similar vibes with Secret Base's "The Worst" series and I feel could slot in as the next installment seamlessly with some minor stylistic adjustments. Keep up with what you're doing, you're one of the reasons why I have an appreciation of Japanese baseball and its history.

love the content! just curious, where do yu get all these old NPB games? I'd love to watch some old games considering it's kinda hard to watch modern NPB in the states, and I'd like to take in more NPB history

Full game footage is very hard to come by. It depends on how militant a broadcaster is about copyright. For instance, for this video I had full access to Game 1 and Game 2, but I only had highlights for Games 3 and 4. If you're interested, Here's Game 1: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kIMTR2V95XA.html&t and Game 2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wGpd_jxIfVs.html&t

I appreciate the English NPB content, but I think I need to point out that "gaijin" is not really a good translation of "foreigner" in Japanese. It's frequently abused by far-right racist groups in Japan, and a whole lot of foreigners in Japan (and Japanese) find it offensive....
@GaijinBaseball
@GaijinBaseball 2 года назад
I understand that connotation does exist, but in my expereince watching NPB games, the announcers use it and the more proper term "gaikokujin" interchangably. While I have Japanese family members by marraige, I myself am not remotely Japanese, nor am I of asian descent. I am basically your textbook definition of the word, and I'm owning it. My branding is what it is. It's too late to change that now.

@@GaijinBaseball Honestly I have rarely if ever heard an announcer refer to a player as a "gaijin". It's always "gaikokujin senshu" or slightly more impolite "suketto". But only one of the two. Would be quite rude for a TV announcer to use "gaijin" given the xenophobic tone.

Dan Serafini has been charged with murder of his Father-In-Law and attempted murder of the Mother-In-Law as well. I don’t think he has gone to trail yet. Crazy.
