In 1952, the Mainichi Orions tried to win one game in a underhanded way, and it kicked off a heated rivalry that's still going strong 70 years later.

Wild how prevalent huge fights and general batshit action was prevalent in sports throughout the world in the 70s and 80s, from the brawls in Major League Baseball and NPB to Hooliganism in association football throughout the world.

If you read stories from ex npb players, they will tell you horror stories with fans, hiroshima, hanshin, chunichi fans have been known culprits back in the day Ive seen footage of players chasing umpires with a bat, even seen footage of shoving and kicking of umpires

Their current location, Saitama and Chiba are natural rival cities too. Both being equal sized suburbs of Tokyo. Saitama has a bigger population, but Chiba has a coastline, and Disneyland. But nowadays, Softbank dominance and Lions incompetence has calmed it down a bit I think.

Funny how roles can flip over the course of a rivalry the way they did in this one. It's also crazy to me how the Lions and Marines basically had the closest thing to a European football derby in baseball. This reminds me a lot of the Sevilla-Real Betis derby in La Liga during the mid to late 2000s where players, fans, managers, and even ownership were at each other's throats and wanted to start fist fights inside and outside of the stadium over the slightest sideways call. That's also a rivalry that died down, but that came as a result of the untimely passing of Sevilla player Antonio Puerta due to a heart attack caused by ACM and both teams coming together out of mourning rather than the head of Spain's police saying to the league "stop the riots or else." Excellent video as always Gaijin Baseball. Love your stuff.

I just found this channel a few weeks ago! It has been incredible!! I can’t believe how well edited it all is, how in depth and detailed! Me and my wife (Japanese) are huge die hard Chiba Lotte Marines fans! I’ve been a fan for many years and this year I’m 4th year in the fan club with a Gold membership! My wife has live in Makuhari all her life and even as a kid went to the 2005 Nippon Series Game 1 vs Tigers that finished early in the 7th due to fog! We found this video fascinating! She has always hated the Lions but never realized it was this deep! Thank you so much for all your hard work!! I’ll definitely keep watching more videos! Also, do you live in Japan?

Don't live there (yet), been a few times, I've always been fascinated with the history of Japanese baseball and the more stories I found, the more I've wanted to tell them. Glad to know you enjoyed it!

Amazing video. You make it sooo funny. Another topic would be that heavy fighting years in NBP like the 1968 Tigers-Giants fight when a Gaijin pitcher (Bacque) simply went nuts with one of Oh’s trainers.

If you watch One Outs, one of the matches between Lycaons (Lions) and Mariners shows a similar strategy of delaying the game untill it gets cancelled

Another great video as always Imo 1952 carp escaping merger would be an interesting video to do If you look at seibu fans nowadays you cannot imagine their team once had rowdy fans!

I'm just agog that the Lions wore their sponsor name on the backs of their home jerseys, and the city name on the backs of their visitors shirts. like, did Taiheiyo Club just not know how to run a ball club?
@GaijinBaseball
@GaijinBaseball Год назад
Bro do not get me started on the incompetence that was the FBC era. Post-Black Mist the Lions couldn't afford to be picky. Taiheiyo Club (or Pacific Club) was a chain of golf courses on Kyushu, and they were the only ones willing to give the Lions money for sponsorship. They get worse too, after NPB forced them to stop that nonsense in 1976, they used an American Football style jersey with a big number on the front instead of "Taiheiyo Club" because Taiheiyo Club wanted to back out. They reverted back to the main unis mid season, and those finally had the player's name on the back. The Crown-Lighter era jerseys were normal, but still came with the caviat that the only company in Fukuoka willing to sponsor the team was a f***ing lighter company that was on the verge of going out of business. They went out of business in 1981. Like I said, the FBC era was a mess.

Wow! I had no idea the rivalry between these two teams was that intense. Query--How exactly were you able to get the standings going into the incidents in question?
@GaijinBaseball

I use 2689web.com There you can find the box score of every NPB or JPBL game ever played, barring the current season
@Tubewings

@@GaijinBaseball I've been to that site. I just can't seem to find specific standings for certain dates. Do they even hat that, or do you have to figure out the standings manually?
@GaijinBaseball

@@Tubewings I just did it manually The urls for the pages a super simple so I flipped between pages real quick

I would think Rakuten Eagles/Orix Buffaloes would be a rivalry considering the original Eagles team where castoffs from the Orix/Kintetsu merger.
