In this review, I'm going to take a look at another beer from the North Coast Brewing Company (‪@northcoastbrewing5050‬), and it's their Brother Thelonious. This is what they're calling a Belgian-style Abbey Ale, and it's also known as a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. I've had this one a few times before, but it's been many years since I last had it, so I thought it'd be a good time to give it a proper review. Let's see how it is!
Commercial Description:
With all the interest in Belgian ales and in the monasteries that brew them, it's time to remind the world that here in the U.S. we have a Monk of our own. Jazz legend Thelonious Monk is the inspiration for North Coast Brewing's Belgian-style Abbey Ale. With an ABV of over 9%, this strong dark ale is rich and robust. Available in a handsome 750 ml bottle with crown and capsule finish or 12 oz. 4-Packs. The label features the Jazz master himself, a portrait by California artist Eric Grbich.
Pertinent Information:

It's been awhile since I've had this one, and I see this everywhere. Love the Old Rasputin. I'll have to revisit it. Cheers!

Definitely do so, Rodney! Such a good beer, and while it's not as popular as Old Rasputin or Old Stock Ale, it's damn tasty for what it is. Would love to see your thoughts! Cheers, man!

Do it, Billy! Such a good beer, and I wish this was fresh, but it is what it is. BTW, awesome beer mail you sent Kyle's way! Love it! Hope things are much cooler for you, buddy! Cheers!

Cool Shirt. I appreciate when brewers call something a "X-Style" beer. A lot of beers can truly only be brewed in certain areas or by certain people and it shows they respect the history of the style. I tried this about 12 years ago, before I was able to rate it on untappd, so I have no idea what I though of it. Your pallet and descriptions always amaze me. I need to revisit this beer.

I'm with you. There's a handful of styles where that comes into play, so I always appreciate them saying "X-style whatever." This is a great beer, but this bottle was a bit oxidized, so I didn't love it as much as I normally do. It's a shame so many classic beers (and breweries) are drying up on the shelves by me. So tough to find a relatively fresh beer like this by me. As for my palate and descriptors, it's just one of those things where after 2000+ reviews, I've learned to convey my thoughts on camera somewhat decently. I still pale in comparison to so many, and I always joke around that my palate is trash. I don't take myself seriously, so it doesn't matter as much to me, haha! Appreciate the kind words, Anderson! I'd love to see a review of this one from you! Cheers, brother!

Scrimshaw, from them, is one of my favorite pilsners. It’s too bad you have trouble finding their main offerings but if you can, it would make a pretty good one for August shelvies.

I always remember liking Scrimshaw, but haven't had it in a long while. Last time I saw a bottle of it, I think it was like a year old. If I happen upon a relatively fresh bottle or can, I'll definitely review it. There's one or two other places I can check for North Coast stuff. I checked their beer finder on the website, and there's only one place within 100 miles that it shows it's available ... and it's in Pennsylvania (about 90 minutes away). Appreciate the suggestion, Steven! Cheers!

Had this last month. Wow one of the best Belgian brews I’ve had in quite awhile and possibly one of the best of this year. Loooved this one especially cuz my love for jazz and north coast always puts on. Cheers 🍻 great bottle art also.

It's definitely great, especially coming from an American brewery. This specific bottle was good, but had a bit of oxidation. The label is great, for sure. Cheers, man!

~~~ I recently enjoyed their Belgian Golden Ale Pranqster. It quite refreshing but you can't have more than one on a hot Florida day. Haven't had the Brother in a few years. I do remember enjoying it. Nice review. CHEERS !!! )))))))))))
Thanks, Gregory! Never had the PranQster. In fact, I've never seen it around here. Not a huge Belgian Golden/Pale Ale guy, but I'd totally try it. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Hope it's not too hot down there, brother! Cheers!
That sucks! People talk crap about weather in Buffalo, but the Summer is usually quite nice -- and very manageable -- while the Winters are overblown. Love the weather around here, haha! You know how it is considering you're from Ohio.
According to their beer finder this is at a store in my area but its at a place I never go to so thats probably why I havent seen it. Can't say I'll be heading to that store to see if its indeed there. Most of the stores in my area that showed up have the Old Rasputin and a couple have the Red Seal Ale according to the beer finder. None say they have all 3 or even 2 of the 3. Kinda strange I think but it makes sense.
Yeah, not sure this is a beer I'd specifically seek out, but if you happen upon it at a random beer store, I'd give it a go. Weird that Old Rasputin and Red Seal Ale are the two beers in your area. Haven't seen the latter in a long time, haha! Cheers, man!
