I'm 51 yrs old and been building performance engines and doing classic car Restorations my entire adult life and I'm always looking for good build videos but they are hard to find good ones cuz people talk too much. Just keep the progress rolling

Hmmmm... I had the same thing happen to new set of EQs one year ago. Valve seized open and then the piston hit it. It was so seized, I couldn't tap it out of the guide. The head was replaced by the seller with no further issues. Also had a terminal come out of a set of Taylor wires from Summit. They just sent me a new set and didn't want the old ones back so I got a few extra wires.

On your mopar heads you have to measure your valve guide and piston clearance they are to close for big lift cams without cutting the

But yur learning! Keep up the good work and keep uploading build videos! You're getting it! You can't go wrong with engine build videos, as long as you don't waste a bunch of time with talking about things people already know and use time lapse during the slow or boring stuff it will keep people's interest. It's when people talk too much and show a bunch of slow boring crap that people lose interest. Keep it compelling by keeping it moving

Luckily I never had a problem with my heads. Probably because the machine shop ordered them and put my valve springs and retainers on. We take all our work to them when repairing cars so I don't have much doubt that they probably went over everything. Sucks that it happened, I've never heard of this issue with these heads. You're practically running the same thing I am except for intake (M1), 2.02 valves (1.92), and true dual exhaust. Going to build exhaust but I've just been too lazy.
@MAKonz-bf8dl
@MAKonz-bf8dl 4 года назад
I had a similar thing happen to a 318 that I let sit to much. An exhaust valve stuck open, the lifter pumped up, and the piston hit the open valve. The pushrod went through the rocker, and then the lifter was thrown out and oil pressure was lost. I just had to put on a new rocker and push rod, and the valve wasn't bent! I lapped it in to be sure, but it is fine.

not only check the valve job and guides on a new store bought pair of heads, have them pressure checked as well. if they leak water into the motor after you bolt them on and run them...they are yours. don't expect the manufacturer to replace them.

If they arent stock heads, eq heads are known for having stuck valve guides, so before installing remember to reassemble the valvetrain, and clean it all
@prevost8686
@prevost8686 2 года назад
Old post but you speak the truth. One would be far better off to buy the bare EQ heads and have a competent machinist install the valve train. I found out the hard way.
@budlanctot3060
@budlanctot3060 2 года назад
For sticking a valve stem in a guide my 1st thought is dirty assembly and/or insufficient initial lube on the guide/ stem. I concur with advice to disassemble and verify clearances and clean and lube before reassembly. I don't know if you need to disassemble the short block or not. But if you don't I'd compare all the piston deck heights to make sure the rod didn't bend, too. If you do pull it apart, you need to make sure the dented piston hasn't damaged ring lands and of course check the rod for straightness.
@blueduster74

@walasiewicz
@walasiewicz 4 года назад
Whenever you buy even brand new cylinder heads, especially brand-new, you should always disassemble them and make sure the valves don't have any binding issues and move freely. Even the best companies that sell cylinder heads assemble them so quickly that they can often have a tight valve guide and if they are a little too tight they will hang up every time and create that same exact issue you experienced and that is very disheartening on a brand new engine

you can tune obd2. you cannot tune obd1. look up "megasquirt ecu". you wire the harness to your stock sensrs and can tune it yourself, or get someone else to. megasquirt 2 is a good place to start.

@@UnitedWeSlide back in the late 70's, I put a 340 4bbl intake with the carter thermo quad, a mallory dual point dristributor and a monster of a mallory coil on top of a 318 in a 71 fury 4-dr sedan. Already had duals . thats when I learned ya can't dump that much gas down a 2-bbl valved 318 head, lol. The car was a slow ass dog leaving the stop sign but it had some amazing top speed. From a rolling start it could tear up a light chevy bodied 350. Fastest I took it to was 127 mph. I had ordered a cam kit for it which would have worked but moved to another state before it came in, never got to finish what I started. Back in those days, mopar did not build a 4bbl version of the 318, they were just 'service motors'. Only way to make em hotter was either 340 heads or a cam. Or both, lol. I had built the car from scrap yard pieces. The body was and X louisanna state trooper intercepter, orginally had the 440 but it was blown, I used the motor, trans, and rearend from an old 69 that the wiring had been butchered but I kept the interceptor cooling system, charging system, suspension, etc. It was afun car.....plain jane as could be. Wish I would have finished it, it was on its way to being the perfect 'sleeper'. Oh well, days gone by......I just finished the 'plenum gasket' issue on my 98 ram 1500 with the 318 this past friday, what a difference! Fixing to order a cold air intake. Trucks nothing fancy, short bed regular cab. Got it sanded and primed and was ready to block sand and finish coat the paint when the gasket issue showed up. I have had the truck 7yrs now, paid 1500.00 from the original owner. Its showing 186K on the clock. Got my hands on some wheels and plan on putting a set of A/T's on it. Where Im at there's not much street trucks anymore, all these yahoo's putting 24's and low profile mudders, haven't figured that out yet, lol.. The truck nowhas sentimental value to me as I am a recovering lung cancer survivor and all the body work and sanding was good therapy, helped me through the chemo and radiation,(thats somerough stuff), but hey, its been 5-1/2 yrs and the doctors had give me 'about 90 days', cancers gone but I am a bit beat up from it still, but I'm still around and playing with my toys, lol......

The hemi isn't better than the magnum engines we have. The so called hemi they make now isn't really a true hemi and the valve seats fall off into the cylinders destroying the engine all together. I thought about the hemi swap but as a mechanic I see them fail too much the magnum engine is a solid power plant it just cant breath from the factory. I thought about an ls swap too going 408 next year with a rear mount turbo. My 46re just failed for the third time after being rebuilt 30k ago. if your motor has done all this you don't need to be messing with it I've built a 454 making 870hp it never had this issue

Machine shop that I purchased the complete heads from tossed them together without checking clearances in the valve guide. They were all so tight they needed to be hit out with a punch. Honed the guides, set all the clearances, and its been running great for months now. But youre right, I shouldnt be messing with any of this. Totally my fault haha.

You can't just pop aftermarket heads onto the engine without checking clearances, dude!

William Crowell clearances in the motor and everything were good. The heads came assembled. I didnt think I needed to get the heads disassembled and checked. They were supposed to be ready to go.

Dude don't put yur camera angle upside down that screws our brains all up trying to watch the video. Oh! And if you don't overheat the engine on your way home from buying it it won't crack heads or blow head gaskets! Oh! And whenever a piston comes up and kisses a valve, THE VALVE IS BENT! PERIOD!
