I've got a special place in my heart for the 3V 4.6s. Specifically your car and Four Eyes car. You two guaranteed own two of the best S197s on RU-vid (IMO). I own one, and the one thing I can say is the best about the 3Vs is the sound. I LOVE the sound! One of the best sounding car models out there for sure. Also, the car is a great example of a muscle car, especially if you're equipped with 4.10 gears and a manual transmission, you really get that old school muscle feel! Unfortunately, with all the problems my car has (and a lot of other people as well, auto or manual, high mileage or low mileage), this car just isn't worth the money to me. Now DON'T GET ME WRONG... if you are able to find and buy a low mileage, single owner car that has been babied and garage kept, all maintenance kept up, you're in luck, and you'll have yourself a great car. But even so, I've met a couple people that had transmissions go out, misfiring problems without any codes, or throttle bodies going bad under 75K miles. With these cars it's really a gamble on buying one that isn't broken from factory. You either get a good one or you get a bad one. I unfortunately got a bad one. But it's a 4 owner car that's been through 5 states, beaten the shit out of (clearly by the previous owners absolute idiocy) with 173K miles on the dash now. I should be grateful it still runs. Sadly, I find it REALLY hard to justify putting thousands of dollars into the car to fix it, especially when it's coming up on 200,000 miles and these cars don't make it past 250,000. I'm looking at a $1000 transmission rebuild (still drivable, even raceable, but really shitty feeling of a transmission with a bad 3rd gear), $700 timing kit (recommended to be replaced around 175K miles), $500 clutch kit, absolute shit brakes that nearly kill me in desperate need of upgrade which is roughly $500, $300 set of fuel injectors, and $300 cold air intake because mine continues to give me problems. Also short throw shifter is $300, but that is not a necessity, just a want for daily driveability because the stock shifter for the TR-3650 is seriously sloppy, clunky, and a terrible experience to drive with. But not a necessity per say so let's scratch that off. To get to the point, if I want to get my car back to the 3V glory, back to running strong, back to being fun for goodness sake, I'm looking at over $3000. And I still owe $5000 on my loan because I idiotically decided to finance a car that had 159K miles on it (at the time of purchase) with all the problems it had lol. So $9000 car, already spent $1000 in maintenance and repairs so far, need to spend $3000 to get it back to normal, I'm at $13000 for a car that barely makes 290 WHP (after CAI, exhaust and tune) and most 1st Gen 5.0s are going for around $15K. I simply can't justify that. I could've put my $2500 down payment on a 5.0 and got 380WHP STOCK, more reliable, less mileage, less problems, better interior, 6th gear, better brakes, still shitty transmissions. But what can ya do? Yes I would be paying an extra $200 a month on car payments and an extra $100 on insurance, but hell at least I'm putting it towards that and not repair costs.... SHIT, this is a REALLY long, almost useless comment, and I feel like I kinda just vented my problems and hate for MY specific car, but man oh man. I LOVE these 3Vs, but with my lifestyle, this car ain't for me. There's so many better options out there for slightly more money. If I had thousands of dollars to put into this car, I would buy a used low mileage engine, a T-56, build the engine, supercharge that bitch and I would own one of the baddest, best cars out there, but I'm not rich and that's not a realistic expectation lol. I'll just sit down and watch your videos and enjoy that 3V content from behind the computer. Thank you 😂
It's a long comment but you summarize the dilemma that us 3v owners all face. Well said, it just means you have a good head on your shoulders understanding how expensive it is to build one of these cars and how much needs to be done with them. At the end of the day you pour thousands of dollars into a depreciating asset. Financially it doesn't make sense, but maybe for those brief moments driving that machine that you built it's worth it🤙🤙
@@CamMarz people that build these don’t do it for cost efficiency, they do it because they love it. Because of the love for the 3V. Because of their passion for cars and love for what they created. I respect all those people. That’s why we’re all car people isn’t it? For the joy cars bring us? I just wish it was a little bit less expensive of a hobby lol.
Glad we got some recognition for Four Eyes. Im gonna be building my new 3v with 84k miles just like his, I even made my own spreadsheet to keep up like he did. i cant wait
Damn, I miss my modded 07' manual GT. Traded it for a 2016 GT and when I modded that one it didn't sound as good if you know what I mean. Somebody hit me head on in that 2016. I'm glad I survived that and now I have a modded 2012 GT. Good God I love this one! Yellow blaze on a sunny day looks great and sounds great...
FYI on the door panels... I had a friend cut some 4-way stretch marine vinyl and used some Landau HHR adhesive. The stuff doesn't move. Hope it helps at an upholstery shop!
Nice built I have 98 gt 5 speed needs paint job full tune up and after that is done I'm gonna put cams gears throttle body and change the cylinder heads if I make around 300whp I'll be happy
I have the 3v & I just put a new engine "Boss block stroked" new transmission 6 speed GT500, all the cooling mods with Afco and Vmp, & everything else u stated also. Mine is a SC Saleen. Currently being put together should be done next week. You don't want to know how much money I dropped but you have a nice ride & set up. PS Stay away from Brenspeeds B326! Lasted 2 months & threw a rod. Bad build on their part they refunded me but still cost me thousands on labor & replacing one of my heads. Hard lesson learned.
@@CamMarz That’s disappointing to hear since they are one of the few shops who still focus on the 3 valves. I’ve always dreamed of sending my 2008 to them one day.
@@GA08GT478 I'm sure they have plenty of satisfied customers as well too, you only hear the bad experiences when your on the internet for the most part🤷♂️
Hey, man. Great video. I love how you kept the exterio simple and super chsrged it conservatively. Why did you go with smaller wheels in the front and not the same size all away around?
Buy some hard plastic door panels from Coverlay! Probably the most recommended/best solution to that issue. I’ve had mine for over a year and I have zero complaints
I'm doing modern restoration to my 09, has 32k original miles on it. all it needs is hoses replaced, coolant flushed, those door pieces glued on (I really need to figure out who sells a GOOD glue and yeah I know about 3M I use that on my apholstery in my vw bug), and the rear all around the rear window should be re-painted just to save it from rusting, no rust on mine at all tho' I will have to touch up paint it or get it re-painted. I found a shop that actually will do the job after searching for a little while, most shops won't even give me an estimate.
If you scrape that crap ass foam off and clean that panel the leather will adhere to the door like its suppose to. I had the same issue in my 3V when I had it. Would recommend Gorilla glue as well lol worked for me :)
As you went through your mods, I found myself saying "I have that". I did miss the type of cams you have. I also have the 60# DeatschWerks injectors, aluminator shortblock, but pretty much everything else is similar. I do have to 5 speed, no auto for me. I have the Vortech V3 HO kit, stock pulley I think is putting out around 12psi. I got 741/663 out of it. I am running the 127650 cams, heavy springs, but keep dropping valves. First was #6, then #5 after rebuild and 800 miles. So, so far I have not had the luck you have had, it is currently broken down now, about to reassemble this month.
That's a badass build! You might need some new retainers or guides for the valves potentially, because the heavier springs can only do so much. Are you revving really high? Cause normally 3v's don't have any valve issues until they start floating past 6500
@@CamMarz cams are good to 7100-7200. The actual valve trumpet is what is breaking. Almost like piston to valve contact but the timing is spot on. Also, I am using Comp cam limiters, not the lockouts. I have spoken to Comp numerous times and no one can/will help. These cams require these springs.
@@CamMarz No doubt. The guides are super loose after I tore it down also, they were perfect when assembled. There is plenty of oil pressure, even have a gauge ON the heads to verify oil pressure at that point. ALL oil channels have/had been brushed and cleaned. Just don't know, I did a break down on my channels, check it out, maybe you will see something that I am missing that could be the problem. Thanks.
It costed about 2800 but it all depends on how you do it I installed the trans and driveshaft myself and ran the wires but I sent it to the shop to get wired and programmed with addition to adding the 13-14 shifter as well you can notice the difference right away especially with the torque and throttle response
2006 Ford Mustang Gt Convertible with Procharger supercharger with a 3.40 pulley on the supercharger,Ford racing intake manifold and 62mm throttle body with Flowmaster outlaw cat back exhaust owner here, Dude! You should really change out both the intake and throttle body. It cost me at the time 1500 from American muscle and it complements the Procharger big time! I'm getting my pony tuned in 2 weeks, so I'll have actual numbers soon.
So ran into a slight issue, I need a bigger fuel pump! Just got off the dyno and right now I'm sitting @ 439 horsepower with 432 foot pounds of torque. According to the data that we're looking at, the fuel pump is cutting out at 5800 RPMs at 10 lb of boost. So until I replace that I can't get the numbers I would really like and if I were to push it I could blow the motor up.
In retrospect, no. But it's always a good idea to have as many gauges as possible to diagnose any potential issues. Plus a boost gauge is cool to look at😂
The stock auto trans isn’t garbage they’re like the engine they can only handle so much before giving up like the stock engines connecting rods c’mon you know that
You should check out my turbo build of my 3V. Just a little street car. Nice build on your car as well. switch over to a Holley and wake that thing up for sure.
I'm jealous but at the same time I see that half the engine bay is zip tied together which sold me on the Paxton Novi 2200 setup instead, seems the ProCharger kits don't fit very well in these cars :/
How's the noise on the highway with the 3.73s? I have an auto with a paxton and I want to swap out to 3.55s or 3.73s but I drive on the interstate a lot; so I don't want to be more deaf than I already am.
My engine makes a clicking sound when I haul ass on the interstate eventually it goes away have you ever heard of this? It's done it since I bought it in November 04. Any help on what this is?
It could honestly be alot of things. More than likely its valve train related, such as the phasers, rocker arms, lifters etc... Could also be time for a timing job, like ur tensioners. An exhaust leak or maybe even a pulley too, but unlikely.
I’ve been looking for an S197 for a swap setup. I have a 2005 Thunderbird I want to throw the engine/transmission in. A mellow exhaust paired with the hot rod cams, a “cheaper” build-for the moment. I got a 5.0 in it at the moment, but if I’m being honest the 5.0 sound just isn’t “me”.
I've had them since I was NA, and I didn't really feel any difference power wise. However it feels alot better with the butterfly plates gone. It takes away that weird throttle you get sometimes.
Prices are definitely inflated right now for vehicles. If it's a private sale, that's too much. If you're buying from a dealer, that seems about what they would ask for it. The 09 iteration of these cars is arguably the best because they snuffed out most of the problems that these cars had in the earlier years of production.
Sorry to hear your transmission has given you so much trouble. I have an 06 with an auto not any problems with the transmission. I am boosting soon I'm waiting on supercharger to be built and shipped.
There's some people that never have a single issue with their autos! Which always surprises me cause I've always had so many issues with mine. What supercharger are you picking up?
@@CamMarz oh ya I'm so excited but terrified because I know I'm going to burn rubber so easy. What's it like is it hard to drive does it burn rubber in all gears?
There is a reason why people yank those out and slap in a 4r75 tranny in them lol. I also hate to say this. However tci isn't the best transmission brand either.
The crazy thing you could have found a car with most this junk already done for not much more than what you paid for this car and saved $20,000. And it was nutty to spend all that money and not upgrade the brakes and stereo. At least paint the brake calipers. Seems like he left off the cost of the painting too, so add $1000 for that. And the labour for installation.. thats probably a few thousand more.
Camaros are actually better to build better transmission and egines that make more power. A cammed fbo camaro ss is pushing 500 hp vs 370 on the mustangs
Your trans rebuilder has no idea what he’s doing. My brother is on 15psi kenne bell and w a 3200 tci stall, and the hardened input shaft w boosted shift pressure in the tcm he beats it daily and it’s held for months. My dad sprays over 300 on his also he’s fbo and his holds
