Great video, as usual. I am a diagnostic & interventional radiologist who evaluates many patients after gallbladder surgery. I would also like to add that your biliary system gradually expands over time after the gallbladder is removed. This allows you to hold much more bile to accomodate your next fatty meal. The bile ducts can even contract in response to a meal, releasing a bolus of the bile juices. This effectively acts as a “secondary functional gallbladder” once adapted.
@published1789

That makes sense from my personal experience. Gall bladder removed at age 15 (a long time ago now) due to not gall stones but -- the layman's explanation given to me -- having a membrane that usually provides a little support by weaving in and out around these organs be a bit tangled around the gall bladder and, effectively, interfering with it to such and extent the little ducts were scarred and blocked. I had real trouble at the beginning eating favorite teenage foods like ice cream, pizza with normally oily pepperoni, home made gravy with turkey fat (at Thanksgiving). Eventually it got easier but I still tended to avoid fats. But 35 years later, I've been on a pretty strict keto diet for about 4.5-5 months and it's working so well. I'm a bit amazed after years and years of avoiding fats -- it seems to be a question of not too many at one time, not mixed with carbs or very rich spices (i.e. salami, pepperoni), and earlier in the day working better than later ... probably quite individual. All of which boils down to ... "Don't give up, folks!"

Scott, thanks for this info! It seems to tee up with my experience. I think I am partially along the way, & explains why I still feel a reaction there to fatty foods. I also find the fat +carb mix causes a stronger response, particularly pastry.

@@marylemley5194 The surgeon will place staples on the duct from the gallbladder to the duct, and then remove the gallbladder. The main bile duct is still open and empties into the small bowel as usual. The gallbladder duct is like a tree branch, while the bile duct is the tree trunk.

Thanks for posting this video! I had my gallbladder out in 1989 and recently began a low-carb diet working toward keto. I had some digestive issues. The diet has improved my sleep. I am about four years into menopause and one of the worst changes is an intractable insomnia, resulting in dramatic weight gain and gradual loss of a very active lifestyle. I also have congestive heart failure and an aortic prosthesis. At 58, I am extremely motivated to return to my healthy lifestyle of walking, cycling and being petite. What amazes me is the lack of nutritional knowledge amongst physicians. My former doctor wanted me to go on a plant-based diet with ZERO fats--he said olive oil would kill me, whereas my cardiologist said olive oil and eating a dozen eggs a week wouldn't hurt me. I was walking eight miles a day at the time. At any rate, I am glad you addressed the gallbladder issue because it helped me stay with it. Right now I'm eating around thirty-five to forty grams of met carbs a day, which seems to be about as low as I can go without GI issues. I need the fiber. I have watched a lot of your videos! They're great. I am thinking about doing your coaching program.

I had my gallbladder removed 15 years ago. I still do carnivore and it’s working very well. If you have gallstones, I am pretty sure you just want the pain to go away and your doc says it’s gotta come out. I’d look into other options to flush out the stones and prevent them by reducing sugars and simple carbs.

FYI, as a general comment in case it helps anyone else's approach. Dr. Becky/Two Fits Docs' approach in their Keto Challenge is 1 tablespoon heavy cream + 1 tablespoon MCT oil in morning coffee. It works so much better for me than just MCT oil or MCT oil + butter. No idea how (or if) it relates to not having a gall bladder. I wonder if it's anything about how cream helps "homogenize" or blend together sauces when it is used in cooking ...? If, perhaps, it is somehow helping to make the MCT oil more digestible.

Yes ,I would like to know about this too ,I had my gallbladder removed about 8 yrs ago ever since it's been a problem after problem, I was wondering about the same regarding the diet .I've gained about 70 pounds and hardly eat do to the pain ,or lack of hunger, So know I have blood pressure and want to lose weight and wanted to try this diet ,But was worried about making my bad cholesterol high,I know I tried this diet when I was younger (adkins) becuase I needed to to lose 20 pound ,but my weight lose doctor would do weekly blood test to monitor ,cholesterol and other things ,I remember she would give me a multivitamin, chromium picolinate, and fish oil to take every day to cut the bad cholesterol down almost is what I under stood from Doctor ,But it's different when you don't have a gallbladder ,That little organ does so much for the body ,Like regulates good fats and bad fats ,The fats that we really can't absorb anymore absorb essential vitamins like A,D,E,k ,So that in it self cause so many different issues in person body. Doctors call the liver ,gallbladder, pancreas, The circle of life ,I would like to lose weight tried other diets would lose like 10 pound and nothing more then that , So yes I would like to that answers too

@robertsmyk4102
@robertsmyk4102 4 года назад
Gee! Just to be picky about it, I don't agree that the gallbladder's purpose is to concentrate bile. The gallbladder concentrates bile only because we have insufficient bile flow and this condition leads to gallstones. The body recovers most of the bile for reuse and when we don't use it, the bile remains for too long in the gallbladder and as more is added the fluids get concentrated to form gallstones. The gallbladder's job is to squirt the correct amount of fluid into the lower stomach to handle the amount of fat leaving the upper stomach.The best way to improve the flow of bile is to consume more fats (like butter and olive oil) and to eat kale. Kale tends to bind to the bile and cause it to be expelled so that new bile will flow. Ever wonder why children don't have gallbladder issues? As we age the gut accumulates bacteria that produce secondary bile which reduces the need for primary bile and because it is part of a closed loop recycling system, the primary bile remains for too long in the gallbladder.

I spent 3 years trying to hang onto my gallbladder. I am pro holistic health and thought I could win this one. Then I had a severe attack and was hospitalised (2022) As I travel to far flung places where I would get little decent medical attention, I decided to have the inflamed gallbladder removed. I had some small stones, but the kicker was one the size of a ping pong ball! It was gross! That needed to be out rather than in - and it was hugely reducing the optimal functioning of my gall bladder. I now take a bile supplement and a digestive enzyme with most meals. Keep a check on how your bowel movements are after certain foods. It’s important to remember that you need to keep your liver happy as it’s doing the work. Hope this helps!

Hi Dr! I was diagnosed with gallstones 2 weeks ago😢...and my doctors put me on the list for a gallbladder removal surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy). In just abt 2½ months, my gallbladder will be gone forever. Tbh, I'm not happy with it😞 I'd rather take medicine or control my diet than undergo surgery if that's possible😭 But anyway, thank you for this helpful content... I can be better prepared should I decide to go ahead with the surgery (I'm still contemplating though😅)
@TaraSykes3
@TaraSykes3 4 месяца назад
I' go ahead with the removal if I were you. I knew I had gall bladder problems which my local hospital dismissed and sent me home with Gaviscon. It turned into my needing emergency surgery some weeks later and the surgeon told me he had never seen a gall bladder as bad as mine. It was putrid, lucky I lived.
@zhizanhao1051
@zhizanhao1051 4 месяца назад
@@TaraSykes3 thank you for your advice. I know that the surgery is for my own good. I just couldn't accept the fact that I'll be living the rest of my life without a gallbladder anymore. Apart from dietary changes, digestive issues, etc I wonder how it feels like living without it...what my future life would be like...am I gonna have to stay home most of the time, I'm just worried I can no longer do things I love to do such as playing sports, hiking, etc
@TaraSykes3
@TaraSykes3 4 месяца назад
Oh I see. I don't believe your doctor has explained properly to you that this is not a real life changing operation. I agree you may have to make some dietary changes, although I haven't had to do that but my two male cousins did. But as for sports, hiking etc it will make no difference at all to your being able to do all of those things, you will enjoy life just the same without a gall bladder. One thing that did surprise me was I developed gall stones eight years after my GB removal, they were extremely painful but easily removed without needing aesthetic. So please try not to worry and good luck.@@zhizanhao1051

@@biggestnaturelover its been a month and yeah certain foods like beef is a no-no for me. I tend to have abdominal cramp and diarrhea. I am ok with pork and chicken though except deep fried. Fish and seafoods aren’t a problem for me along with eating veggies. I am also ok with low fat milk and low fat cheese. If your gallstone starts bothering you, you need to see a doctor but I hope everything is good on you.

Just eat low carb, moderate protein and moderate fat. 20/40/40. Dont do any higher then 40 otherwise your liver and pancreas will suffer. dont count carbs from vegetables. ive had my appendix and gb removed and ive found this works. also make sure to take digestive enzymes and do fasting.

@@alexlabra1562 Hi, in my case, I had bouts of too much bile acid whenever I ate fatty foods. Basically my liver would dump huge amounts of bile into my intestines. Fortunately this wasn’t the case with every meal but I knew that if I ate anything fatty, then I’d have problems afterwards. What helped me was trying any supplement that was designed for diarrhea. If I recall, what worked best was a daily calcium chewable…. I found that it worked just as well as the cholestyramine that my doctor prescribed to soak up the excess bile. Also, if I knew I’d be eating fatty foods on a particular day, I’d try to also eat foods high in fiber at the same time… again to soak up the bile. This all happened a decade ago. Every once in a while today, I still have a bout of bile diarrhea but I’ve learned what triggers it. If it gets triggered, I know how to address it so I can eat whatever I want. I’ve been on the carnivore diet for the past 8 months; it’s a high fat diet so I was worried about diarrhea. Fortunately, I’ve found that butter doesn’t trigger my diarrhea, however too much cold oils and dairy does in fact set it off. You just have to experiment on what foods work for you and which don’t.
