I feel like the dream sequence where we see brianna's dad dying had something to do with candyman, maybe he was running away from candyman by taking his own life or maybe he took his own life in fear of turning into another candyman , that sequence was never explained and should've been explored further, maybe she has a direct link to candyman that she either knows about but wont say or simply doesnt know yet. Supposedly there's a rumor going around that if you look closely in certain scenes there are 12 candyman appearances subtly lurking in the background, i remember seeing at least 10 in the film.

Elliot. This was a worst case scenario for me. I couldn't have disliked this movie more. Directing was solid, but the story, writing, and performances were so bland, boring, and generic, I just couldn't believe it. And the biggest sin of all for any horror movie, especially of this caliber, it just wasn't scary. I love the first so much and this honestly hurt me a little. Your review is very fair and you are the GOAT of reviewing movies, so well done here man!

I agree 100% with your review of the film. I felt the build up to the 3rd act was promising an epic, haunting and powerful ending but it fell so flat. I think my gripe with it is the transition to the 3rd act felt as if there were scenes cut out and missing. It just went from slow tension building to batshit crazy with no explanation and poorly executed. It really does feel like its missing 10 minutes of footage at the end. The last scene is effectively awesome but at that point, you hope it continues but the credits rolled and I was a bit sad. The original is so terrifying and the ending is soul stirring and powerful, its hard not to compare. I really hope theres a directors cut!!

Even with some pacing and development issues, this actually builds on and improves on the lore from the 1992 film, and the Candyman character himself. Just like Dr. Sleep expanded the lore from the original Shining. I also think they are some key points in the credit sequence that some may have missed.

People understood the message the filmmakers were trying to get across with the end credits. It just didn’t mesh well with the theme of the film. Especially with the lead character. The other Candymen were victims of racism in some way (racist mobs, police) but Anthony was not. He was a victim of the Candyman. Even the guy William who *SPOILER ALERT* goes crazy and saws off Anthony’s hand and replaces it with a hook is black so how is the new Candyman a victim of racism? It just didn’t blend overall

I generally GAF about Helen. When her friend was killed off, you cared because they spent time showing you that friendship. I know you're not supposed to like Anthony he's enormously attention driven. But give us someone to care about or else the artistry of the film, the kills etc feel wasted. I'll probably rewatch because of the camera work, puppet flashback scenes are impressive but it would've been nice to get some emotional depth from some of these characters. Also, we never hear Candyman talk or see much of him either which is dissappointing.

Recently just watched the original for the first time and loved it. Its now one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I like this movie, but it frustrates me because it has so much potential and just misses the mark. I feel like the twist with the laundromat at the end was completely unnecessary, and the whole move could have benefited from an extra half hour to flesh stuff out. I felt there were plot lines hinted at and discarded (white girl in the library, Brianna's father) and the movie kind of just forgets about its Candyman Sherman.
@ToastyBunsMcGee

Spoilers* Pros: I absolutely love what they do with the idea of what Candyman is. This movie absolutely succeeds in expanding on the lore that was set up in the first one. Focusing on Candyman being the personification of generational trauma was a brilliant move. The first one touches on these things, but this one goes all in and I love it. Cinematography and music are also top notch. I love how the film opens up with the upside down shots of Chicago. The first one, focusing on a white woman experiencing the realities that black people experience on a daily basis, opens with shots looking down on Chicago. This one, focusing on Candyman and what that means, opens with shots looking up where you can’t even see the tops of buildings. Cons: The ending was absolutely rushed, in my opinion. Maybe they were supposed to have a certain runtime? Idk, that’s the only way I can explain it. It definitely needed a little more of Burke and his story. I would’ve also liked to see more of Anthony’s Candyman.

I loved that they connected baby Anthony into this story. However, that was it for me. Great acting & directing, but the story lost me. I really didn’t understand the point of adding in another “Candyman” story. I get the social commentary and the anger of unjust killings. Yet, when I watched the original Candyman, I felt his rage was not only about his unjust killing but also the fact that his murder/story was forgotten for some time. It is one thing to cruelly kill me. It is another thing when no one pays for my murder, & then I am easily forgotten because of my killer. Candyman was killed and then discarded, all because he was black. Candyman wanted to be remembered. He wanted his pain to echo off of people telling his story. He wanted to be feared. His strength was in his revenge, in the cruelty of his murder; his strength was within the bee stings and the hook. He fed off of being the ultimate urban legend. I feel like the original Candyman wouldn’t want to share his story with anybody else’s pain. His pain was enough! I did like that they made Anthony an artist, similar to the original Candyman’s occupation before he was murdered. Nice touch there. I miss the Sweet to the Sweets graffiti, and the walls within walls feel of the high-rise projects. I understand the low rises are all that’s left, but the high rises were the perfect backdrop of this story. A place full of pain and violence built on Candyman’s ashes/death site, was just perfect! I miss the storytelling that was so haunting in the original film. Candyman is storytelling within a story. Even though I liked the puppets; nothing beats the conversation with the janitor lady telling the murder of Ruthie Jean, & the young boy telling the story of a young boy’s murder in the bathroom. Real horror within their storytelling from excellent actors! That was missed. Many ppl complain about the hypocrisy of Candyman killing black ppl after his unjust killing. Many like that he didn’t kill many or any black ppl in this film. I understand the hypocrisy of the legend of Candyman. With the social commentary, it can get lost that this is a horror film. Yes, he was unjustly killed by white ppl. However Candyman, like many villains who seek revenge, become consumed by revenge and rage. In this consumption is where they lose their righteousness and ultimately kill victims who are truly innocent. It makes the character/villain right & wrong at the same time. You understand their rage, yet you also understand they are the boogeyman and need to go! I am disappointed in the film but I can appreciate it at the same time . I also didn’t understand the point of telling the story of Anthony’s girlfriend’s father. They mentioned it a few times but then It lost the point to me 🥴

@goddessgodivah
@goddessgodivah 2 года назад
@@MovieFiles there will most likely be a sequel. They are entitled to create their own version of Candyman…I wasn’t a fan of Rob Zombie’s Halloween. You see other Halloween films were made after that with the original characters back, or at least Jamie Lee Curtis. The same I believe is happening with Child’s Play. People are getting a hold of the concept/theme & making it their own; while the original content makers are fighting to keep telling the story the original way. I will support the sequel. I just believe there was something terrorizing about a man being unjustly killed, a poor neighborhood being built on his gravesite/death location; and then he terrorizes the poor inhabitants who can’t afford to leave. That is true horror; to fear elements of your environment and the elements of the supernatural; and you have to live in it because you have nowhere else to go. That was the social commentary within the original. How they are trying to accomplish it in this new film, lost me 🤷🏽‍♀️

Unpopular opinion ... I think it was overhyped garbage . I just said this on another reviewers page as well . I found it dull , predictable , and offensive . This movie felt like a parody of the original ( which is still a classic ) . I was offended at the way this movie actually attempted to tie in the topic of racial injustice and police brutality into some horror film without actually delving deeper into those topics . They made Candyman into some sort of sadistic Superman for oppressed black folks . NO THANK YOU !!! The first film slightly touches on those same issues without it seeming forced . This was a pretentious film about a struggling artist . No more , No less . I yearn for the day that hollywood starts greenlighting stories about average , everyday black people and stop highlighting these extreme versions of us . We're either portrayed as rich Artists , Doctors , and Lawyers or Pimps , Gangbangers , and Hookers . Can I please see a film about a teacher , mailman , or UPS driver that has a crush on a Waitress , Teacher , or Beautician and have it NOT be a comedy ??? Great Review . Sorry for the rant ❤😂

I really loved this movie and wanted it to be longer. I didn’t know why Candyman didn’t kill everyone around when the mirror thing happened, like the girl in the stall that had headphones, or even Brianna and Anthony when they were playing in the mirror in the beginning. @@sorethumbs379 not always true. Actually, many black reviewers and viewers have gave poor and mediocre reviews for this film who loved the original candyman. You're making it a racial issue with assumptions. Many people have said it missed the mark of execution then was rushed in several ways with poor writing and used a social justice agenda instead of a strong story line. Many people of color have said they didn't like many things including the social commentary.

@@sorethumbs379 I'm not uncomfortable at all. Candyman the original was one of my favorite horror movies. Keep your political bullshit agendas out of it and quit making your social warrior justice commentary attacking strangers who have an opinion which differs from yours. I've seen you troll the same nonsense in all the threads on other reviewers channels. It's obvious by your comments and name hiding behind a screen that you like to create conflict to appear important.

It was a decent film, it definitely felt like a sequel more than a reboot but easy to follow along for anyone that hasn't seen the OG films. It needed more gore, we got a few kills but would've liked for the kill scenes to be extended . The set up and lore of candyman was good, the underlying story of gentrification and history of black men being mistreated by white people for centuries , going back to slavery was needed in this film, the performance by the main character yahya abdul mateen playing anthony was good. They picked the right guy to carry the torch of candyman . Would have liked to see tony todd alot more in this film . as well as virginia madsen's character helen. But hoping maybe they bring them both back for another sequel.

My reluctance to see the film might sound silly to some...I was so traumatized by what befell the character that Kasi Lemmons played in the original that I’m afraid the same thing will happen to Vanessa Williams’ character. Good luck to everyone else in the film. 😧

I loved everything about the movie it had no cons to me at all the people that's says it has cons went in the movie looking for the wrong stuff it was deep asf very bone chilling and I love the passing of the torch from Todd's Candyman to Anthony's Candyman and it's a story that's going to be talked about from years to come and it's going to be a other one and let's not forget here that Candyman was made a monster but in reality no he wasn't he was made a hero by the end of the movie great work and Nia Decosta is going to be something serious to deal with in Black Cinema and Horror genre Jordan Peele u got u one

I loved the movie. It’s interesting how upset some have gotten over the “social commentary” as its being put. I can take a few guesses as to why some of these people are so hateful of the movie, using other excuses to guise why. Plus, the points this movie makes relating to the “social commentary” illustrates it in a painfully personal manner, forcing the viewer to step out of the American mythology of violence and crimes against black people which, i think, is a coping mechanism used to dehumanize those who are oppressed in order to allow it to continue without guilt. AT the end, I thought “Everyone should read The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin.”

I was totally disappointed. The whole baby and Candyman story didn't make any sense. I know they tried to make it a history lesson, but that didn't really make sense either because in the original he only killed his own people(black people). If he was brutalized by another race of Folk , why not kill them? So the back history really didn't fit well. It wasn't scary at all. The first one gave me nightmares, this one was dry.

I’m honestly frustrated that a lot of people are really missing the point of this 3rd act… it literally is set up the entire movie before it to get to that point. Really ask black folks to pay attention to this movie, it’s commentary seems to be going over people’s heads because it doesn’t involve direct black trauma outside of candyman his self, which is still cathartic because he gets his revenge quickly, it is a story about how the traumas, violence, and unjust will hit their doorstep. No matter how many buildings they knock down or houses they build.

People heavily criticized the original candyman back in the 90’s, trashing the movie. Now, everybody seems to like the first candyman. Years from now, this movie is going to be the same way. They did that to the original poltergeist, and scream 2. Scream 2 is now seeming to get good reviews in 2021 and that movie was heavily trashed back then too. All this review shit don’t mean nothing at this point to me because people nick pick too much and over analyze missing and not understanding why the movie was like it was. That’s all what it is. Just don’t review it. These people still gonna make movies and still make their money. The critics shit is a sham to make coins too.

@@Uniquely_Mario I actually did not like any of the sequels, but I understand what you are saying. However, I believe this film effectively expands the lore and character of Candymen. It didn't just rehash the story from the original or sequels but opened an entirely new chapter. and possibilities for the character.

The social commentary was a bit too much for me. I enjoyed the “thats white people shit” which I enjoyed because that’s usually what I would say in certain situations. Or I guess someone as a Hispanic & I’m sure black people we all do the same but In scary situations we avoid them & say “that’s white people shit” it’s funny but it literally went on for the whole movie 😐 then the ending bothered me so much especially with the cop telling the female actress “we shot him cause we feared for our lives & comply with us or go to jail for the rest of your life” LIKE BRO HUH ?? How is that convenient to the main story & what just happened right now

My biggest fear was the fact this movie was made while Trump was still President. I knew the Social commentary was going to be off the charts. People are tired of all that crap. The movie gets released in 2021, and No One cares about how Hollywood feels about anything. This is why The Suicide Squad was so great. NO social commentary, but we still had a diverse cast that we cheered for without checking all the boxes to make sure there were enough minorities, and genders represented. I didn't care in 1992 what color Candyman was, he was awesome, and I never thought about it. I thought it was unique to have a horror character in the projects, and I don't mind the take on gentrification, because those are real things that are interesting. It's when you shove signals down our throat throughout the whole movie, when you're trying to just watch a horror movie for god's sake that can totally ruin everything. Can't wait to hear about how awful America is during Maverick that's been shelved just as long as Candyman has. The good new is I think we're past this crap going forward. With all that said the Character Candyman...Still kicks ass.

Horror does not equate jump scares or not being able to sleep after watching something...if you think that is what it is, no wonder you are not a horror fan. Horror does bridge social issues and shines lights on aspects we don't like to talk about. Candyman did that so well. Also...the bees in his mouth were real. Candyman deserves the hype.
