Celestion Century Vintage neo speaker - Forgotten Masterpiece?

The Celestion Century Vintage was one of Celestion's first neo (neodymium) speakers which came in to being in the early 2000s. Although it was fantastic for saving some weight it wasn't massively popular and seemed to dissapear within ten years or so of being released... soon being replaced by the Celestion neo creamback.
These days it is having a little bit of a revival, even if only in small circles, it is started to be given more credit than it was back in the day... Even I have to admit, I appreciate it a lot more now that
The speakers are Celestion Alnico Blue, Vintage 30, Century Vintage, G12-65 (Heritage not classic series), Alnico Cream, V type, H heritage 55Hz, Classic Lead 80, Alnico Gold, H heritage 75Hz, H creamback 75, G12H Redback, M creamback 65, H anniversary, M heritage, G12T-75, Neo Creamback, Alnico Ruby, Mystery Speaker, A Type, WGS Invader 50
If you have any experience of the A type then please let us know... if there is anything you want to hear or other comparisons then please let us know.

I purchased my G12 Century Vintage (8 Ohm-50W) accidentaly, just because good price and curiosity. After that I tried a lot of different speakers, some was very good, some just nice, some I didn't liked at all. But after all of them I was continue return to Century Vintage. Still favorite 12 inch speaker.

It has a massive sound across the whole spectrum, not only in the high register, plus a nice smooth midrange honk. How can somebody not like it? It just comes in handy for basic classic guitar sounds. I am surprised it got so much hate back then, not so surprised as I recall the era (out of fashion, for sure it was).

It works great as a stand alone speaker in a combo, but to be honest if you want to mix them up in a 4 x 12 it doesn't really blend very well from what I'm hearing more and more. I really like it though.

Sounds like a fabulous speaker. I think maybe the V-Type Neo they currently make would be a lot more similar than the Neo Creamback, but I love the frequency response of the Century Vintage in this video. I just ordered a barely used one for my Marshall Haze 15 cab, to replace the G12H30 Heritage 75Hz speaker currently in it. The G12H had too much boomy low end for such a small closed back cab. The Century Vintage should help with the weight of the cab, and of course, hopefully tame down the boomy lows. I love the midrange sound, and the highs, in this video. Thanks for the excellent comparison! 🎶🔥🤘🔥🎶

I love the back on this speaker! I've listened to a lot of your speaker comparisons (they are great and very helpful, so thank you for them!), and the Century Vintage is definitely one of my favorites based on your tests. I wish it hadn't been discontinued. I don't see any listed on Reverb or eBay right now so it seems they have become hard to find.

I have 4 of these I'm thinking of selling. These speakers ride a fine line between blistering and fake sounding. If you push the gain too high they sound inorganic, though this can be said for any speaker the Century Vintage are one of the most extreme examples. I usually leave all the tone controls at noon and use the tone knob on my OD808 to add brightness and attack.

I hear what you are saying there, it does feel a smidge softer to me but that may be due to it beign an old speaker. Thanks for watching.

Sounds similar to a G12H Van halen that I have, it also sounds very close to the G12H30 Anniversary. Great sounding speaker, that said I question its versatility and the abiity to tame highs. I really liked how the Alnico blue sounded here and the G12H 55hz

The. E turn Vintage was the second Neo type speaker. The first was the G12 Century, supposedly based on a Classic Lead 80. It was loud (102 dB sensitivity) and not too bad. Had it in a Line 6 Flextone 3 amp for a long time and it was excellent. Not as popular as the Century Vintage that came after. Only sold it on last year.

I am not sure about the description of the video. As far as I know the Century Vintage was not the very first Neo from Celestion but actually the second one. I have a Century Vintage in a Fender HRD extension cab for which I removed the back panel so it is a very lightweight 1x2.

I put a Century Vintage into a Laney LC30 mk1 around 2006. Initially it felt very "stiff", a bit too precise and quick to react and a little harsh in the high-end - definitely an improvement on the stock HH speaker but still quite underwhelming. After manually wearing it in (running music through it for several hours at volume inside a sealed box) it opened up a LOT. After being subjected to a few gigs & humidity and temperature changes over the course of a year it reacted and sounded as good as any speaker I've tried. I'm still using it and love it. I'm not sure why the Neo's take more time to loosen up, even the current models are stiff from the factory.

To me it rather is the masterpiece. Even if bright, it doesn't seem any ice-picky or fizzy, at least in your recordings. On its own, it seems closest to the classic greenback IMO. Could be great especially for darker amps and better cutting through the mix. Mixes beautifully with my favourite alnico blue and H heritage 55, also alnico cream and red and the neo creamback, which could be a perfect lightweight 212. Cheers!

Does any store still have a stock of Celestion Lynchback speakers? I play high(er) gain hard rock tones and I'm looking for something for a new 4x12 with 98db efficiency or less and already have cabs with G12M's and G12M Heritages. What would be a good alternative? I looked into Creamback M65's but they are too dark for me and I don't want to mix speakers.

@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs Год назад
yeah they are quite rare... when they were available no one wanted to buy them, it seems now everyone wants them ;) I think they tend to go for around £100 on ebay, which to be honest isn;t that bad as a new neo speaker tends to be around the £150 mark.

@@ZillaCabs in your opinion is there a speaker voiced the same or similar to this one?
@levipartridge2790
@levipartridge2790 Год назад
@@chemx8247 As mentioned in a few other comments, the closest comparison sounds like the G12H Anniversary, though there's a lot of discussion and difference of opinion elsewhere on how the H Anniversary sounds before/after breaking the speaker in, and I don't know the age of the one recorded here. I can't vouch for any of that personally as I haven't had a chance to try a H Anniversary yet Technically the neo creamback was what replaced the century vintage, it sounds slightly more tamed at the top end but I'd say the mid character is very similar You can always try checking occasionally for second hand century vintages to pop up on the internet, which they do every few months. It took me 2-3 months waiting for the one I eventually bought

@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 года назад
Well if they are the stock G12T75 speaker then its most probably the cab you don't like, but check to make sure they are the same speakers. In general the 1936 is made from ply and the 1922 made from MDF so that is probably causing you the issues.
