yeah the turbine single pusher was for a military prototype that didn't get traction - pun intended - and it was not OEM supported, but it did perform well. Other problem is the extremely weak pressurization which really wasn't worth the trouble or expense [3.5psi?]. I was so disappointed to hear. but they are cheap.

When I was 14 I saw a sky master at the Nort Bend Oregon Airport and thought it was very cool. A mechanic was working on the rear engine. At age 24 as a A&P working on the rear engine of a 337 I realized that mechanic I saw was having a bad day!

Very nice over all walk-around and review. (The Best I have watched in a long time) I have owned all of the Skymasters, 336 up to P337s, even an O2 with over 10,000 hours of safe fun flying, many were over-water, jungles, hot missions, mountains, airshows or open water (they always brought me home). The TSIO550s with IR sensors and loaded hard points were the funnest to fly., along with the Adams A500. Please Keep up the with the good work General Sky

I’ve got a 74 with the gear door mod, best mod for a 337. We have the cargo pod, which the book states only a 3mph penalty. Even with only 4 people it’s worth it to have the extra space for chocks and steps.

I suspect that the Cessna Skymaster is probably the best performing twin-engined aircraft…..two engines with the drag of te engine’s nacelle, no yaw-tendencies during engine-out, no torque factor……great design……thighs that were designed in the 60’s and 70’s are the best design.
@DeadstickAdventures
@DeadstickAdventures 7 месяцев назад
Would be much better performing if they squeezed in an extra 50hp on each engine! Good design though for sure. Thanks for commenting. :)

I actually learned to fly in a 65 model the guy was teaching me for free I might add, he kept it meticulous. We had all kinds of nicknames for suck and blow, suck me blow you some I can’t remember but it was a great plane. Although we did lose the rear engine once let me tell you, you better be fast in getting that prop feathered especially if it’s the front engine.

WOW! I have never learned as much about any one aircraft as I did about the Skymaster in this video. I've loved the look of the Skymaster for 20+ years, and I've read a lot about them, but I didn't know half of the things in this video. I didn't know about the coupling between the electric trim and the flap settings. Is that true for all Skymaster models? The STC to remove the clamshell doors is amazing! I think I've seen Skymasters flying where you could see the wheels in the back; I guess they had that mod. I don't know why every single Skymaster doesn't have that. Wow! (well, cost, I suppose). Thank you so much for this incredibly thorough video!

She’s a good bus hey mate. Question for you: how many hours could you spend out over the water at a maximum?
@TWR132
@TWR132 2 года назад
@@DeadstickAdventures SOO and XTA with the tip tanks can go out for 8.5 hours burning 60l/hr and have a very reasonable fuel reserve left. I've heard of others pulling the engines right back and conserving even more fuel, but I never had to do that.

Maintained a pressurized model for years. Extremely complicated, expensive, noisy vibrating machine. We used to refer to it as the chafe master as the rear engine baffles were always worn. Overheating was a major problem even in a mild climate. Cool airplane.

Hahaha ‘the chafe monster’ 😂 Disappointing to hear how expensive it was to maintain. It’s a shame because they are a very interesting and attention grabbing aircraft!

I laughed when the RU-vidr said the rear engine was the “cool” (I.e. sweet) engine, when, as you say, it is historically the hot running engine…and hence, the engine that usually doesn’t make it to TBO. Still, as with all runts of the little, the Skymaster has a rabid fan club.
@9HighFlyer9
@9HighFlyer9 8 месяцев назад
About 20 years ago I was pretty close to purchasing a 337. Front engine had about 100hrs on a factory overhaul. Rear was 500 from hitting tbo. Living in Phoenix I didn't want to tempt fate with that rear engine overheating. Looking back that overhaul cost sounds almost cheap now. I ended up partners in a '99 182S. Boring but reliable.

Wasn't the PT6 version a one off STC for the Navy? I would have liked to see a GE H75 but it is not avail as a pusher engine due to thrust bearing design.

@skippmclovan1135

Did the very earliest 336 version of the Skymaster have the best TO and sea-level initial climb-out performance due to it's more compact fuselage and lesser weight? Certainly the earliest version of the venerable C150 with the 'continuous line' fuselage aerodynamics, was also the lightest, and therefore presented the best power to weight ratio of all the 0-200 C150's, translating to higher TO and sea-level climb-out performance, when compared against the progressively heavier 'Omniview' higher drag versions.

Amazing how many interesting aircraft Cessna designed and built in the heyday of GA, not a new design in over 40 years and only 3 single engine models in production and all are fixed gear. At some point these legacy planes will time out, and the only used aircraft available in 30-40 years from now will be from Cirrus!
