An update on the check engine light (CEL) issue with my Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special, and the experience I had with the dealer - Moto Corsa in Gillingham (who appear to have called in the receivers).

I'm completely unsurprised they've gone belly up. They sound like once they've got your money they don't give a dam. The motorcycling consumer is better off with a business like this gone. I hope you end up satisfied with your bike.

these types of Dealers are the reason why MotoGuzzi is so underrated, it's not fair for Guzzi because they are one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in Europe and they are still all completely build in Italy, they have a wonderful heritage and amazing machines to own.

I've had my eyes on them for quite sometime now but for me it's the lack of their dealer network. The closest dealers in my area are over 2 hrs away in one direction. I can haul the bike myself for service but it's totally not convenient by any means. We have the Japanese covered here but most everything else is a long ways out... BMW, Indian, Royal Enfield, Ducati are all over 2 hrs, we do have H-D an hour away which is relocating closer to about 30 min. We do have a new Triumph dealer in the area but it's not a very good one, next closet is 2 hrs. I currently ride a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the only problems I've had was water in the fuel twice which had to have been pumped in from the fuel stations, both times I experienced it was the next ride after filling up so it couldn't have had enough time for the water to seperate out of the ethanol fuel. I try to run non-ethanol when I can along with fuel treatment and so far I haven't had any more issues. From the research I've done is that it can take months for the water to seperate out causing issues. I still use the ethanol fuel occasionally which over here is E10 or 10% ethanol which Kawasaki does say I can use.

I can sympathize with you. I live in the U.S. and have ridden for over forty years. In some cases I've learned the hard way, but now, when I purchase a new bike I first make sure the dealer is solid. Good luck with your Guzzi.

Things go wrong sometimes, it happens. The difference between a good dealer and a bad dealer is how they deal with it. I bought a car which had a supercharger failure on the way home. It was collected the next morning, taken to the repair shop of my choice, paid in full plus they arranged for me to have a loan car. That's good service. I also nearly bought a V7 from Moto Corsa, they're pretty local to me. The salesman seemed pretty uninterested so I bought a Triumph T100 instead

I bought a V7 ten years ago, after a few months the speedo stopped working then the E.C.U packed up and it not would not start. The dealer I bought it from did not want to repair it so I rang Moto Guzzi in Italy. They took my details and said Guzzu U.K would be in touch and would contact me, which they did. A courier with a van picked my bike up and took it to Wigan to be repaired which they duly did and I got a lift down to pick the bike up. All done free of charge. A lovely bike to ride but I would never buy another.

Sorry to hear about your woes, a dealership going under even caught out the Missenden Flyer. Dealers of all flavours can be hit and miss, 13:10 my nearest Honda dealer were utterly hopeless (large Northern dealer who prefer to race bikes than deal with road bike users) and yet I found all three Moto Guzzi dealers (all 40 miles from me!) to be very helpful and I bought a V85TT from one of them to replace my Honda. However, not had any warranty issues so can't comment on that.

Hi, just bought a 2022, 'returned', V7 Special with 250 miles on the clock, due to engine 'warning light'. Yes, the light is on/off/flashing much of the time but I was 'assured' that it was simply an ECU problem (i.e. - incorrect programming message & not the engine). I was also assured that the recall, free fix, was imminent and not to worry about riding the bike. Have now done c.300 miles with the warning light on, off, flashing and every other variant...bike running fine...just a case of modern gubbins not being as reliable as the cost reflects ! Luvin' the bike regardless. Waited almost 50 years to buy what feels like a fifty year old Guzzi. ( for originality, it puts Triumph well in the shade😪 ) Luckily, the dealer seems to be thriving too.🙂👍

I was very interested in your post as I had a similar situation at the end of last year. I bought a new Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 and after a few weeks it kept cutting out when I changed from 4th to 3rd gear. The dealer couldn’t fix the issue despite several attempts so I insisted on my money back (as per your comment about consumer rights). I was really lucky because they refunded me just a few weeks before they went bust. It certainly put me off the Husqvarna/KTM brand and has made me more cautious of where I buy a bike from.

I’d been patiently awaiting an update, but I’m disappointed to hear you’re getting treated so poorly. Dealer networks and competency appear to be the biggest issue with Guzzi. Makes me rethink my impending switch from Ducati. 10+ years of ownership and while it’s not like I’ve never had an issue, I’ve never lost faith in any of my dealers. Really hoping things get sorted for you and that you can enjoy new bike ownership…this sounds like an absolute nightmare.

The parent company Piaggio are failing to provide decent service even to dealers. A dealer near me parted company with Piaggio a few years ago as it was costing them too much especially in terms of their own reputation. Warranty claims that were quite valid were being rejected outright by Piaggio and with a long-standing, hard won reputation to uphold, this family firm were covering the cost themselves instead. But it became too much and they had to let the brand go. A real shame
@PhilipBallGarry

Interesting! We had a test ride on a V7 850 about a year ago. Unfortunately it had several gremlins including random and spurious display issues. These manifested as nonsense values for mpg, max speed etc. It also had a misfire (which I know yours hasn't got). We took it back and were going to give it another go after the dealer had gone over it. He rang a couple of days later to say that one of the spark plug leads had been arcing and this was constantly spiking the ECU. They had swapped both leads and this had cured the issue completely. We never got chance to revisit this ourselves but I thought I'd mention it in case it was helpful for your diagnosis 🤗

I bought a used Moto Guzzi Norge , it had a full service history from Moto Corsa. However, it was apparent that the services had not been carried out properly, or even at all. The rear shock and swinging arm were in the service schedule to be regreased etc. The swingarm had never been off the bike from new, and was seized. Took loads of time and effort to remove , which then required a new swinging arm. Never trusted them, they had a good reputation, but I am amazed by this .

My deepest sympathies. I’ve had some 16 bikes over the years Hondas,Suzuki,Kawasaki, 2 BMW GS,a Triumph Tiger Trail 750(‘82). Not owned a Yamaha,Ducati (only base grade mechanical ability so I avoided those). Honestly if I had the money a Guzzi V85tt would be top of my list. Lovely bike and big fan of the twin/shaft drive set up. Brilliant consumer protection laws we should have in Australia but we don’t. I would have lost patience after that manager David had failed in his duty and gone to the Exeter dealer as well as making a nuisance of myself with Guzzi until they fixed the situation with the bike permanently. I did that with Mazda Australia and the local dealer over a diesel particulant filter problem that was going to cost me over $13,000 dollars. Eventually it cost me $1,500. You have to be very persistent (not overly aggressive) with these issues. No I am not giving up or going away until you fix the problem and look after me. I will pursue every legitimate option open to me.

At 2,000 miles and I haven't had even one niggle with my 850 special, but see that some people have, so on the constant lookout :) The handling is superb and the brakes are more than adequate (depends what you are comparing to). The gearbox takes some getting used to with that elusive neutral when really hot and the goose 'cluck' when changing on the first three gears, but in all other respects it is really smooth. Having a pillion onboard is a cinch, don't even feel them, which is important for me. Overall, it's a definite keeper.

CG, I think a CEL on a brandy new bike is acceptable. Clearly, it's a software problem. Clearing the code & fixing the misreading sensor are 2 very different things. Dealers get educated by Corporate (because they've seen lots more) & I'm sure there's a way to fix it. But, 3 years for a MOT is forever in ownership time. Try to relax & enjoy the bike... it will be fixed! (Probably by the Exeter dealer!) Congrats on your new bike! May it provide years of trouble free bimbling.

This is precisely why I didn't pull the trigger on a V85TT. Lack of nationwide dealers, and the general attitude and atmosphere there when I did find one. I remember feeling the same at 2 KTM dealerships last year. With a relatively new model and a brand not known to be top for reliability you need a good efficient dealer network. I just fancied a change after all these years but in the end I decided to stick with tried and tested Honda. Wherever I go in the world I know I can easily get parts and everyone can work on them.

I can say that my V85TT has been trouble free in 2.5 years and 4500 miles. Though, I have one of the early ones which is Euro 4, and the new bikes, including the V7 are Euro 5. As I understand it, these stricter emissions standards are hard to meet with old air-cooled engines, and it looks like the system is a bit sensitive. I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with the electrics though.

You should know. I have a V7 850 Centenario that I bought in July 2021. When working it is an excellent, characterful, roadster. It failed 3 months later in September 2021 due to an ignition problem that involved the stator. The bike was returned to the dealer in September 2021 and was not returned to me until May 2022 !!!!. Until it completely failed the indications that I had that something was amiss was the very occasional backfire and starting hesitancy some mornings. I had a test ride on the Moto Corsa demo bike back in May and was in a position to pay cash if it was all that I hoped it would be. Whilst to his credit, the salesman allowed me a test ride, he had an extremely condescending attitude and mocked my query as to whether a centrestand was available. Why would anyone want a centrestand? Well I do all my own servicing normally (never been able to afford a new bike before) and also change my own tyres, so a centrestand is pretty useful! 'Lifetime warranty sir, you only have to bring it to use for servicing!' Long story short, I was put off buying anything from them even though there was no hint at the time they were in trouble and managed to find a nearly new V7 as a private sale. Took it back to SP Motorcycles in Exeter (supplying dealer) and I too found them to be decent and straight-up guys like you.

I asked to attend the creditors meeting and was told the chances of getting my deposit back were low. At the same time I have my Spada with MotoCorsa classics for engine work. So that was a bit of a worry, but I have been told that it is safe and I will get it back repaired. In May at 13K miles I had the same fault as you, ECL on. The PADS (Piaggio's diagnostic software) reported a O2 sensor error and a miss fire. MotoCorsa reset it and so far in 3000 miles not had a problem. Not surprised to hear yours has issues with spuriously detecting a misfire, as the fuel mapping doesn't appear to be the best on the V7 850s. Mine doesn't throw up an engine light, but it frequently misfires on fixed throttle settings. Not too bad on the straights, but a bit disconcerting when going around roundabouts. The engine misses and the bike drops into the turn. It sounds like Moto Guzzi need to issue a fuel map/electronics update as soon as possible.

Good service has gone the way of the Dodo. The biggest issue with piaggio group bikes is the dealer network and support. I have to drive nearly an hour to my nearest dealer. Of which Aprilia and Moto Guzzi are only a small part of the dealership. I asked them to order me a quickshifter and IMU for my Tuono and they did not know what it was. I knew more about the bikes than them. Also when it comes to the service. If Bob they guy that works on the Aprilia's is away. You get some guy that has never worked on a Aprilia doing the service. Even Bob only works on one Aprilia a month. If you know what I mean. I would think they would take a engine light seriously. I mean it's alright thinking its software. What if something else happens to the motor while the light is on?. You won't even know and you will damage the engine. Would that they even cover the warranty if you rode it with the light on in that situation?

Well bought a Moto Guzzi… with electronic engine control. On the way home from the dealer a warning light and code showed up. Now I paid $699 shipping charge and $599 dealer prep along with tax and license of $499 the a dealer paperwork fee of $450, too. All of which seemed more or less erroneous depending on these items. On the light that showed up well calling up two dealers resulted in different causation stories and need for payment statements. So drove home and cleared it myself… a two minute job, and; one of those minutes was the web search and discovery of explanation. The only other issue was a low oil warning for which I only needed to add oil for, which as I stopped at a Loves Truck Stop when it happened as I “just rolled in”! So without a clue of what oil was used and no motorcycle oil available I bought a little oil change kit consisting of a cardboard box stuffed with absorbent and a plastic bag to drain the oil… then filled up with some Shell T5 10w-30… the same used by nearly every over the road heavy duty Diesel engine maker as first fill and break-in lube. Then proceeded home to figure if I should keep running the T5 or water 1000 miles and switch to T6 15w-40 or something less readily available, but not before going into the McDonalds to dispose of my bag, have a Coke and pie. Then checking Loves store bought a extra spare power supply battery and magnetic phone mount for my cell phone, so not to get lost anymore. And, the magnetic cellphone mount worked perfectly and did not let my phone go flying off the bike when at 85mph I was hit with an unexpected side wind gust driving though W Virginia’s mountain troll road… still collecting tolls every 4.5 miles of $4.25 ever since 1954… won’t they ever get it paid off some day

Long story short after a lot of testing at Teasdales and communication with Italy it needed a new map from Guzzi in Italy which seems to have sorted it (it's now done another 1000 miles). I also spoke to Kevin at Brighton Moto from whom I bought the bike (he was the only dealer who could get me a Centenario in summer 2021) and he confirmed a lot of testing between Thirsk and Italy on my bike's online service record and that Piaggio Group bikes tend to use the same core engine management system across the range mapped differently for each model. The T3, T4 and T5 still are a thing, and the more dedicated people would even put a Griso-engine into a T frame. The perks? Cut out all "sensors" and "feelers" indicating "misfires" or other unnecessary crap and concentrate on performance. @@stevec6427 Had to change the ECU two times on one of my more modern bikes (BMW X bike, fourth owner) within one year of ownership. One bloody soldering oxidizing or one drip of water on the wrong place and everything goes to shit, You need a tow truck or a friend coming to pluck You from the road because that problem turns the bike into a paperweight. I now have an ECU in it which I am (legally) not allowed to have in Germany because it is freely programmable - there is no "good" original one though because they stopped support (bike is from 2007) and the aftermarket solution, despite "illegal", is the only way to keep the thing on the road because every used one has the same issues - it's pathetic. That does not happen with "real" mechanical carb-bikes. You gotta have a general understanding of the ways ICE machines are working, and You'll need some tools, OK, but You don't have to be a fully equipped computer soldering specialist for repairing a carb, a camshaft or a primary chain which You can (and I did) repair basically on the roadside. Delicate electronics with a short shelflife and no resilience versus water, roadsalt or vibrations are the natural enemy of otherwise undestroyable internal combustion machinery. Even Diesel engines were ruined with electronics these days, while a Diesel doesn't even need a battery or a spark to run basically for ever without any maintenance than an oil change now and then. The idea of "reliable electronics" is a funny one, let me tell You so much. You do not go on a journey with electronics in Your car/truck/motorbike. The standard of motorcycle dealerships in the UK is poor to atrocious. Nor is it always down to the dealers: recently Ducati UK decided to stop the only dealer in the North East between Yorkshire and Scotland from selling Ducati (seemingly because Ducati want dealerships to be exclusive, and not sell other brands) without having a replacement dealer to take over for this large area of the country. This left all the Ducati owners like myself in Newcastle who need servicing or fancy a new bike to ride all the way across the country to the west coast Carlise dealership. Not going to happen: I don' t pay Ducati prices and Ducati servicing costs to be inconvenienced so badly, so I fired off a complaint to Ducati on their website. Here's where it gets interesting and indicative of the malaise being very much UK centric. I received a very courteous, very concerned telephone call from a very nice lady about my complaint. She was calling from Bolgna, Italy. Furthermore, Ducati were concerned some jobsworth 'suit' at Ducati UK had made such a stupid decision, and apologised for the poor customer service from Ducati UK, and advised me they would contact Ducati UK and I would hear from them shortly. That's more like it, I thought, a manufacturer who values their customers. I looked forward to hearing from Ducati UK. Sure enough, about 2 days later I received not a nice, apologetic call, but instead a brief, lacklustre email from a secretary at Ducati UK, not even a customer manager or anything, to the effect a new dealership would be happening, but they couldn't give me a date when. Simply abysmal. And this is Ducati UK, the top HQ, the beacon, the standard their dealerships are inspired by lol!

Guzzis are great bikes. Dont worry about that light. If bike starts and runs ok just ignore it. Its more likely a bad earth fault or dirty connection at clocks. Check spark plug metal terminal caps are screwed on tight, they've a habit of slackening off. Just run the bike and light will almost certainly go out eventually. I used to have 6 guzzis up to 2 years ago. Due to getting on in years I sold the 3 large ones and have kept the smaller 750s. Now and again the management light comes on for a bit then goes out. As I said if bike starts and runs OK there is no issue to worry about. Most dealers are clueless about bikes not just guzzis. They're simple machines and DIY friendly. Get involved with machine and learn. You'll never go near a dealer again.

People shouldn’t need to be forgiving, it’s just not acceptable to get a new bike in a dirty, broken condition. Faults do happen but this is just lack of attention, care and respect. IMO they are not fit to run a business. Beautiful bike bye the way.

Many Guzzi dealers here in Norway have dropped the brand. (Due to their financial demand that co. owners be personally liable for their stock. Many would not risk that). My closest dealer refused to continue when presented with this and switched to Suzuki. Luckily for me and my Stelvio he's willing to help me as far as he can with the bike. But he no longer has access to the Moto Guzzi service system, of course. I have to travel far to a dealer who has. This happened before the bad times with the flu and everything.

This is one of the problems with Moto Guzzi. Their bikes are really cool (I had a 2017 V7iii Special) but the dealer network can be hit or miss. I had a dealer 15 minutes from my house, but their reviews were mostly bad. There's another dealership 2 hours away from me and that one is apparently great, but who wants to ride 2 hours for service, especially when you're leaving the bike for a day or more. I ended up doing most of my own maintenance on that bike. (Fluid changes, valve clearance, etc... but I bought it used so it wasn't under warranty.)
@CGRidesMotorcycles
@CGRidesMotorcycles 2 года назад
Having a local dealer makes a huge difference - I wouldn’t want to ride 2 hours either, especially if you are ping-ponging on a warranty issue. At least they are pretty straightforward bikes to maintain, electronics excepted. My V85TT is out of warranty, so I’m thinking I might do the basics myself. Already stripped and greased the rear shock… I was quite proud of that having had no mechanical experience!

Lookimg at the reports online they went under due to a dispute over Brough Superior and the owners of Moto Corsa decided to withdraw their financial support. What you saw happens in other areas of business when they are or about to become insolvent. Their own staff were not paid and one of them has started a new company that will be trading as Moto Corsa and has the Moto Guzzi franchise trading from the same location according to reports. Hopefully if you return to them you will get a better resonse.

@@madcockney indeed it is surprising - this is business basics 101. I've been running a business for 16 years and now have a company with 37 staff, so I've done my fair share of handling problems and dealing with other shareholders. I know how I would respond to a customer facing a problem like mine, and the response I got from Moto Corsa was pretty far removed from that standard. The experience spanned many weeks, so I'm not convinced that it was the shareholders/investors stopping staff from returning calls or delivering good service. After all, as you point out, that would be a foolhardy way to run a business you're heavily invested in. I'm glad you've received good service. Sadly I haven't and I'll be voting with my feet.

Me and the Mrs have had 3 new Moto Guzzi bikes a grisso a breva which never gave us any probs what so ever and then a v7111 which was blighted by crap paintwork etc which both dealer colchester motorcycles and guzzi themselves were not interested in the slightest to solve the problem!. They just took the bike back and so I bought at the time an aprilia v4 which never gave any probs either!!. I will never ever by another new guzzi as the factory just release new bikes and fuck you if you have problems!!.

Moto Guzzi it's one of those brands that only a brand loyalist mad man would bet the house on it. Probably not even living in the factory's floor you could get proper and prompt customer support from them. That's Italian brands for you. Ducati it's gotten better but not by a whole lot. Good luck with your Guzzi nightmare and hope you learn a lesson when it comes to Italian motorcycles.

Thank you. The lesson I have mainly learned through 21 bike purchases in 15 years, is that buying bikes is a total lottery and you can have problems with any brand and any dealer. The few Italian motorcycles I have owned have been trouble-free, apart from this minor issue... and that includes a Benelli Tornado 900! Can't say the same for Honda and Kawasaki. And I had poor dealer service from BMW too.

I too have had my local Royal Enfield Kawasaki dealership go bust & only heard about from a mate who rode past on HIS Fatbob.I thought they'd move & get a email any day explaining things but nothing.Rang Royal Enfield Head Office to confirm it bust.They should be notifying customers of their predicament & offer a 3rd party garage for services instead of keeping quiet.
