If you can't emotionally or financially sustain a parental lifestyle yet you choose to have kids anyway, then that's a million times more selfish and harmful compared to simply not becoming a parent.

To me people who have chose to be childfree are selfless because they are not hurting anyone especially if they know that they can't financially or emotionally or physically be able to support a child

When I was younger, many people told me I'll change my opinion regarding not wanting to have kids when I "grow up". Now I'm 35, still don't want kids and highly doubt I'll want them later. Of course, there's a chance for anything, but honestly, the more I live, the less I want to have anything related to kids in my life. Also having a cat is more than enough for me 😅

I can't believe we live in a world where we have to give reasons and arguments for not having kids. Omg. I cannot- I cannot with these people... I don't want children because.... I do NOT want... children. Ez. c: They don't need further explanation.

People who say we are selfish just haven't actually thought about it! I mean, this would only make sense if there were millions of potential babies in the sky begging us to be born and we said no 😂 Even then we would do whatever we wanted of course but i would understand the "selfish" label more. Now it just makes no sense, how am i selfish for NOT wanting to create a new person that doesn't have to exist in the first place? Just for me to feel loved or to be taken care of in old age like they do. They can't face the fact that they are extremely selfish actually.
@a.medved

I totally understand you and how you think! xD And I agree 110%! How can it ever be selfish?
@jumpinjohnnyruss

They have begun to think about it and don't like the logical implications of that line of thinking that they see on the horizon. So they say that those who disagree with them, instead, are the selfish ones.

Would like to add to the first point about selfishness. You mentioned good points about the good that childfree ppl can do. However, I would like to also push the idea that we shouldn't need to exhibit explicit good to the world to be viewed as "not selfish", instead actively choosing against children that we have no interest/means/capacity to raise, we are actively preventing harm. Recognising and actively choosing this path makes us not selfish in the least

The thing that strikes me about the fulfilment part is while if you choose to have children you may be fulfilled in the family department but all other aspects of life will fall to the wayside, at least to some degree, most likely a significant one. What about career fulfilment? Friendship? personal growth? creative endeavours? fitness goals? travel goals? self-care? hobbies? adequate rest and relaxation time? I think its fair to say that parenthood can lead to a more severe lack of fulfilment if any of these categories are cherished by said individual. Lets have that conversation. How parenthood can lead to a lack of fulfilment in the harsh light of reality.
@a.medved
@a.medved 7 месяцев назад
I agree! And yes, some might be able to have all of those things with kids aswell, mainly because the value of kids is so high! But most likely your personal goals will be set aside one way or another when having responsibilities for a kid or more.

one point people keep making to me is that there will be no one to take care of me when im old…. isn’t it far more selfish to only have children so they will be caretakers for you one day????
@a.medved
@a.medved 8 месяцев назад
Exactly!! We can't put that pressure on a child! That is not fair, it is only selfish if that is the reason to have kids!
@lovebug1180
@lovebug1180 7 месяцев назад
It's also not guaranteed that your kids will take care of you. What if they move to another state or country? What if they turn into a criminal? What if they're born with a disability? Or they hate you and want nothing to do with you? There are SO MANY things that can happen with your kids; it's a huge gamble 🙃

you mentioned something interesting that the purpose can be anything which got me thinking. no one gets upset at catholic priests for not having kids because they made a choice to be childfree by dedicating their life to the church yet when a layperson does it its selfish...? make it make sense

On the last point, I try to convince others to make the same choice. Consent matters. Making the most significant decision you could possibly make for another, and having no conceivable way (no pun intended) for them to consent to it, is what happens when people decide to have children.
@a.medved
@a.medved 8 месяцев назад
Of course consent matters! If two people want kids = consent, if two people don't want kids = consent. But if someone wants kids and the other don't, well, that is quite big of a gap between what you want in life so there it will be difficult with consent. I would not try to convince someone who wants kids to give up on that wish just because I want to be childfree, that just means we are incompatible :) Or I might misunderstand you? If I do, I apologize, please let me know :D

If they want kids don't want kids or how many kids they would like to have. People probably never really think about it not going how they want it to go

It's not that your programmed to not want kids. But you might not be programmed to want kids. Some people might not be programmed to want kids. And people who want kids might not all ways be programmed to want kids

Come to think about it if there dad left them before they was born. Or even if they are a sparm donor. If they don't have anything to do with there kids don't know them and never see them. That is still like being chaldfree
@bennewman4675
@bennewman4675 7 месяцев назад
I understand that not everyone wants kids. But sometimes that might be looked at or thought of as if it's the only reason people don't have kids. If someone can't have kids some people might guess its because they don't want kids. All so because some people can accept things it dosen't all ways have to be both of them who didn't want kids

There are already many humans on this plannet. It also show that the cultures who are "more" developed have less children. Because less children die. Better healthcare and less crimes. Friends of mine have 5 children, they love being parents! If I have none, then we are still doing well. After all, nature is about balance
@amiramaz

@@a.medvedfree choice is great and I'm glad ppl can choose to do what they want. Still it's such a basic aspect of life on earth and I wish this idea won't become more popular as time goes by, shrinking culture is a dying culture.
@a.medved
@a.medved 8 месяцев назад
@@amiramaz You are totally right, if more and more chose a childfree lifestyle, cultures will die, and ofc that is sad. But if this trend is to stop, then a lot of things in our society needs to change as well. There are so many reasons why people decides not to have kids (the society we live in today, the costs, the pressure, environment, etc etc). If we want to change this trend, then I think we need to make the idea around having kids more attractive. In today's society, that is simply not the case... and we have also seen a correlation between a decrease in childbirth with higher educational degrees. So yes, I do understand your point of view, and I appreciate the way you express yourself, I respect that, and I really do understand, and agree to a certain degree, with what you say, but at the same time, I will not live in 100 years, ofc I'm gonna chose my life here and now, and do what I can to help the way I see fit. I would for example love to adopt later on instead, or help kids in need. That is my contribution ☺ Take care of yourself

@@a.medved great accrute answer. The west does have a problem with making having children easier and more attractive. Thats a hard problem with no clear solution.
