A Soviet defector reported that a USSR navy base commander once used up a whole year's worth of grey anti-rust paint to "freshen up" the cliffs leading to his base in order to appeal to a visiting official. And the same commander cut down several hundred trees from a forest nearby, and then stuck them into "post holes" along the road leading to the base, for the same visiting official. Of course the trees were dead at that point, but since they were evergreens, of course they lasted long enough until the official left. Typical Potemkin village tactics.

There are a lot of stories from people who served in the soviet army, about painting the grass around their base, before important visits. Also, my uncle was a truck driver at the time. All the drivers would go and dump the remaining fuel by the forests at the end of every work day, because the amount of work you've done was measured by the amount of fuel you've used. Imagine them using lead based paint... The camo netting might actually achieve something by creating shade, retaining moisture and giving small plants a chance to start growing. The netting should be made of something that breaks down over the span of a few years though, and it should be done in a area where there is actually a chance of something growing, instead of some desert or rocky cliff side.

Ironically leaves are pretty dark so spreading their color everywhere will worsen the reflectivity/albedo, meaning more sunlight gets absorbed, making the already unbearably hot barren landscape even hotter. Usually the water vapor and shade caused by natural vegetation will more than make up for this and even reduce temperature significantly. But not if everything is dead plastic and paint, then it does the opposite.

Looks like it was a swamp before, which was dried and ground raised. 95% of such nets and painting I see on construction cites. Construction company wants to make a place appealing to customers, because they sell all apartments way before anything is finished and greenified. Obviously it is just temporary thing. I went for a walk in Finland. I picked and ate blueberries, lingonberries, raspberries and some redcurrants. If I would go further I would find buckthornberries and cloudberries, and lots of mushrooms. I dont touch the mushrooms because I dont recognize them, but they are clean enough to eat too and this is still the city, just a little way from the University campus. My friend who is a chemistry student says you can safely drink from forest streams when you are further from the city, and children go to catch fish with nets in the little river behind the houses. This is the right way to live, I tell you. Oh, and the city planted apple trees in the park for people to enjoy. You can just, have an apple.

@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
@Kronin Yes, it sounds like that, if you say it like that. That means, that if you say something, that is something you say, whether it is true or not. What you say is true to every country in the world, you just say it in a way it sounds different. Except USA. You cant pick berries in forest in USA, because picking berries is illegal. Also mushrooms. Actually walking in forest is illegal in, so thats kinda bad.
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
@Kronin Anyway, out of curiosity, when was the last time you just walked in a forest, ate the berries, listened to the wind, or just the silence? Put your feet in the cold water of a stream? When was the last time you were scared to be outside? What was the last time you saw children walk to school by themselves? When has the police treated you like you were important? When have you talked to your countrys leaders, face to face, as equals? When was the last time one of your leaders voluntarily resigned or gave up power, not because they did something, but were put in position where they COULD have done something, like, insider trading? When have you found out that the police are not allowed to demand your papers unless they have enough suspicion of a crime to actually bring you in for questioning? When have you realised that it should be unnecessary and illegal for a police to pull a gun unless they are actually being attacked, but if they ARE attacked, the most common number of bullets fired to incapacitate an assailant should be one? Yes, one bullet. Also, when have you last realised that when you are watching advertisements, you are working to pay for whatever it is you are watching, because, its not actually free, and if someone is not paying for it, and ALL of it, then you dont get it at all? And most importantly, when was the time you realised that politicians work for you, are payed with your money, and they actually have to do things that the people want, instead of the other way? That a country can never be free, because its either the people or the country, but one has to be in charge?
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
@Kronin Theres only one difference in the processes. One has given up its rights, while the other has improved them. They are opposites, going completely different directions. Also, a few years ago? I try to go every day, even if just for 20 minutes. You need to take better care of yourself, exercise a bit.
@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
@Kronin Just trying to understand your thinking. I gave examples of the differences, how one side has succeeded and other has failed, and you called it "no difference" and "highlighting your point". Maybe you didnt understand, that I was doing a case by case comparison of things that work in Finland and do not in USA. Freedoms people have in Finland, but not in USA. Problems people face in USA, but not in Finland, or to a very minimal amount in comparison. Maybe there was just lacking the thought that some of these things are even possible, such as that its normal and expected that 7 year olds walk a mile to school by themselves as its incomprehensible in the experience of an average american.

I've personally seen this up close and personal when, in a fancy Chinese restaurant, we told the waiter that a water glass was dirty, he simply wiped it off with his dirty apron and then told us it was clean now. If you do wrong or dont do right, you get punished and dont get your rewards. Except, everyone is stealing a little bit from the load, and whats left is not enough to do things properly. And you dont get rewarded for doing things properly, because the mission statement is badly done on purpose, so everyone can skim a little bit of money. So even if you care, theres nothing you can do. i really really love how you go from showing them literally painting the gras green to using it as a metaphor for all their shady cover up jobs.

The story of a evil human painting plants green to trick people has got to be somewhere in Chinese literature. It sounds like some cliche ancient wise tale.

I feel like the netting has a basis as a good idea. If you put saplings of plants with vines or plants that like to dig into rock, on a net, and throw it over the side of a cliff or something, then you just spray it down with water every couple days until the plants have established themselves, double points for using organic fabric in the netting so it can biodegrade or be absorbed as nutrients for thr plants.

I don't know how long they've been doing this kind of thing, but I was there in '92 and I can tell you they were spray painting the grass green even then. (At that time it was because the Asian Games committee was coming to Beijing so this was their big plan to impress. They shut down all industry in the city for 3 days too to get rid of the smog. It actually worked a bit. For a couple days the skies were clear.)

Me too! I happened to be in Beijing 10 years ago at the tail end of a big annual commie convention. All the skies were bright blue it was amazing. Then the CCP convention ended and they turned on all the coal factories again the thick gummy smog came rolling in and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face after literally 24 hours.

I'm no botanist, but if you pain the grass green with god knows what chemicals (you know it's probably toxic), doesn't that cause a feedback effect so even when the grass can grow when it's watered it can't because it can't get photosynthesis?

Actually, the green we see is the less used color. The real problem here is that plants breath! So this is killing it by sealing all the pores. And oil paint usually are toxic to everything, so you are also killing the roots that would be able to germinate new leafs when good conditions returns...
@dwavenminer
@dwavenminer Год назад
By the color it looks like the paint is probably copper oxide based...which in that large amounts will kill the grass and other plants...
