This feels like a horror movie script that accidentally ended up in the wrong bin.

I'm convinced this screenplay was cobbled together from the author's childhood journals or comics. This screenplay basically comes across as an adolescent boy's power fantasy. He's (supposedly) smarter and better than all the adults around him, to the point of being demeaning to everyone, including if not especially his mother. He gets to be the badass vigilante assassin using his impeccable rube-goldberg-like planning (which probably sounded clever in his journal but falls apart once you apply real-world adult reasoning). He gets to save the damsel in distress--who doesn't even have a say in how she is rescued. And, on top of that, he also gets to indulge in the "people will really miss you when you're dead" fantasy. Seriously, every narcissistic, melodramatic impulse of early adolescence is being indulged here.

While I agree with most of your theory and this is a horrible movie, I feel like one getting saved from a dangerous situation that's out of one's control is inherently a "beggars can't be choosers" kinda deal. Abuse victims don't usually get to cherry pick how they get away from it, especially if we're talking about a kid.

I'd be interested to hear what an actual Henry thinks of the movie. After all, there are child geniuses out there. Its not just a media trope. I knew one growing up. He ended up double majoring in Arabic and Chinese

Rae J I don't know if I'd go that far, like if you killed everyone in the film than the whole city would be dead. And they hardly deserve that. And everyone seems to agree that the rest of Chistans family and Anna's room mate aren't complete scum so they can get a pass as well. Though the later flaking on her interview with the douche bag extreme putting the whole thing in motion so maybe we can send her to a abondoned island for a spell

The brain tumor came out of nowhere, they could have used the tumor to their advantage, maybe it was causing Henry to THINK the girl was being abused, when she actually wasn't, it could have a touching moment in the end where Henry apologizes to the step-dad for accusing him without proof.

I'm a pretty easy movie watcher. Usually if I like an actor or actress, I'll find some sort of entertainment in the movie. I absolutely love Jacob Tremblay and Maddie so that was enough for me to get some enjoyment out of the movie. yeah the tone was questionable and the plot was weird but the acting was actually pretty good, especially from Maddie who had never done a movie before. So I accepted this movie for what it was walking into it and actually found some entertainment in it. So the 63% are probably made up of people like me and Dance Moms super fans

Going off what the review presented, it was a nicely shot movie, and the Maddie Ziegler scene was legitimately beautiful to watch, and the child performances were solid. I wouldn't say it's one of the worst films ever, but for a return to smaller filmmaking after a mega-blockbuster like Jurassic World I sure didn't expect it to be this messy.

If I was the writer... I would first write Henry's intelligence puts to the test as he tried different ways to expose the stepfather, but smart as they are they all fail. When Henry dies... he still have a bunch of other plans to expose him for the mother and killing the stepfather becomes the last resort if rest of Henry's plan should ever fail or there is a deadline.

'The Emoji Movie' might not be the most offensive or incompetently-made movie ever, but I think many still have called it the worst because even less competent/more offensive movies actually GAVE a shit. And a lot of people feel that 'The Emoji Movie' is the kind of product that gives other studios the idea that they can get away with just using a Hollywood ckeck list and copying other directors' homework-which hopefully it isn't. (To be fair though, Transformers 5 essentially has the same problem when you get down to it, and it shows when it underperformed SIGNIFICANTLY at the domestic box office.) And yeah, both the Razzies AND Oscars are really stupid.

LavenousForever I can see where you're coming from. But does that explain the alleged bruises Henry mentioned? It could very well be both. Abusive behaviors don't have to occur on a daily basis in order to be considered abuse.
@LavenousForever
@LavenousForever 6 лет назад
Avalasia Love i mean as horrible it is to think about, if she tried to fight it at any point that could have caused bruises. Or even if he grabbed her arms hard to hold her down or something. That could bruise her arms. That would explain why she’s always wearing long sleeves and the fact that we don’t necessarily see the bruises. Now she does wear the leotard while she dances which exposes her arms so i do think they should have at least added some small bruises to her arms or back. So yeah, it’s not a perfect theory, that’s just how i viewed it

I’m willing to bet that the original script, the one all the actors and crew were so excited about was a completely different story. Maybe in that version the girl didn’t have an abusive dad; she was just a weird, clumsy girl and Henry just came to the wrong conclusion.

Is the kid's genius the reason why they live in such a beautiful home when the mom works at a friggin diner?
@thedorkone1516
@thedorkone1516 3 года назад
I have a theory. Well, it's not really my theory, it's extrapolated from Folding Idea's video on Book of Henry. Remember, the mom doesn't KNOW about Henry's stock money until after he dies, but in the film, before Henry gets stick... they live in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, and the mom is THERE for her kids. They explicitly talk about how the family can AFFORD a newer car (with there being a running 'joke' about the mom insisting there's nothing wrong with the old car). She's about to take them to school and pick them up, help out with homework, there's NEVER any worry over Henry's medical bills after he gets sick, and that diner does NOT look like the place that's going to offer good insurance, so... So I think the family was already relatively well off. I think the house and car were already paid for. I think the mom works at the diner because whatever nest egg she has -- possibly from the death or her husband -- would run out if they were just flat out living off it, but... the family is FINE. If we take the Doyalist perspective... this is a bit of a plot hole caused by the script being written and re-written over the course of 20 years, with the writer not stopping to think that the "Kid Genius Saves The Family From Financial Ruin" plot beat doesn't work unless you show that the family is ACTUALLY struggling.

@LordArikado

Eh, with the benefit of hindsight, I can understand why the movie strayed away from depicting the abuse, even if it went too far in not showing any kind of specifics. Movies centering on abuse have to walk a fine line between tastefully depicting an abusive situation and either reveling in depictions of it or overdoing it so much that it becomes unintentionally comedic. This movie definitely suffers from being too vague on how Maddie Ziegler's character is being abused, but with a screenplay this deranged, it easily could've veered into the total opposite direction. I don't think there's really a good way for a story this ineptly written to properly depict its subject matter without a complete overhaul of the basic plot.

Henry died before he could watch his work come true, _and_ this plan is a waste of time, money and talent! Seriously, Henry could've used that talent to build a time machine, go back in time, and kill Hitler, preventing WW2- *Oh, crap I just remembered the last time that someone tried that, it didn't go so well:* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bq1JhGNKs1s.html

I should also mention- and this was not in this review- that there was sort-of-implied romantic subplot bwtween Henry and his mother's alcoholic best friend. Something along the lines of "Oh, if only you weren't eleven years old I would date you"... And then when Henry is dying, she actually full-on kisses him on the lips. Not joking, this was in the movie. I work at a Movie Theatre and had to witness this scene probably 5 or 6 times when checking for phones in the theatre. Not that I could blame anyone for using them in this movie. I tried to actually watch the movie all the way through (because I got in free), and had to leave at this point. I left the theatre feeling like I wasted an hour of my time without even getting a "so bad it's good" sort of feeling.

I think the movie was trying to point out the difference between smart and wisdom. Like they were trying to show that no matter how smart he is, at the end of the day he's still a child and he will think and react as such because he doesn't have the wisdom that an adult would have just from living their life. Kind of a confusing message and they don't do that good of a job showing it, but that's how I interpreted it

Having watched this movie recently, I think the book and the plan to murder her stepfather were both a major red herring. He had tried other ways to stop this man from abusing Christina. He told the Principal at school....he reported it to CPS. Nobody would listen to him and because the man was the police commissioner and he was just a kid, and they wouldn't do anything without proof. The way I interpreted the ending (the Mom following Henry's detailed plan to murder the stepfather, and the Principal watching Christina do her beautiful dance and choosing in this moment to protect her...I think in both instances, it was THEIR choice to act. That moment, where her eyes lock with Christina's and she finally reacts and calls the police...it is in this moment, when she sees Christina dancing (and notice, throughout the movie, Christina is wearing long sleeves and her long hair falls over her face. When she is dancing, her arms are bare and her hair is pulled back in a bun....and I'm sure the Principal saw the bruises and scars that she had tried to hide for so long...she saw the unvarnished pain in this child's eyes and it is in this moment that she realizes Henry was telling her the truth when he came to her all those times pleading for her to protect this innocent child. I think THAT was the point of Henry's red book. He never REALLY wanted his mother to kill the stepdad. He ONLY wanted Christina to be saved. That's why the mouse-trap, ball thing went off when the mother was hiding there, waiting for the perfect moment to kill this guy. NOTICE what happened in that moment....the ball hit the wall and revealed a series of photographs, ALL of Henry when he was a little boy. She realizes the truth in this moment...that her son was just a child and not this perfect ideal of a man that his mother made him out to be. The relationship between Henry and his mother was not a typical mother/son relationship. He was definitely the parent in that house, and she was the child...and when Henry was gone, this was his final gift to her....the realization that now, SHE has to step up and be the parent and protect Christina and her other son. She can't rely on Henry to take care of everything anymore....she has to be the Mom now.

anyway, the emoji movie, i think, won on the ground of being one of the most soulless and derivative piece of media ever created. At least 50 shades darker has an original (albeit horrible) plot and transformers... ok, i don't know if that movie has anything good in it, but at least it tried more in the animation and effect department. The emoji movie isn't badly animated at all, but the character design and setting design were either very simple or straight up taken from existing properties.

I think Colin Trevorrow and that douchebag writer both saw themselves as Henry. They were basically Tommy Wiseau filmmakers that just wanted everyone to be amazed at their stand in character and feel bad for him. Henry is the most unlikable character I’ve ever seen, yet the movie insists that we should love him. That’s a classic egosploitation auteur movie. Neil Breene, John Dehart, Sam mraovich and now Colin Trevorrow.

Oh, the whole stock thing is a massive plot black hole. While true you can occasionally pick a stock that explodes in value, you usually don't make 1000% returns on investment over short periods. My point? Well that means either Henry was trading waaaaaaay earlier, or he picked the best stocks ever that exploded overnight. Or a third option, that the family has/had money, but invested it all in stocks. It just raises too many questions. This has a boomerang issue as he would likely have capital gains taxes on top of that. It's just a mess.

Okay, so I commented when this video was new to say that I had no regrets about voting straight Emoji Movie for the Razzies. Watching this video again, I'm rethinking that. It's still the biggest piece of soulless, hollow, design-by-committee corporate trash I've ever seen, and its simple existence offends me as a film theory major, *BUT* I really don't think that's something I should be rewarding. Even ironically. Razzies should really be going to movies that at least have the courtesy to be *interestingly* terrible. If I had a do-over I'd probably vote for The Snowman, it's not often you see a wide-release movie that's straight-up unfinished.

So, basically the mom is a sniper with no training. I mean, depending on the distance we're talking, assuming a stationary target its not THAT hard. But you'd still need someone who knows what they're doing to buy appropriate ammunition, mount the scope, and get it sighted in (basically adjust the scope so the cross-hairs match the path of the bullet as it exits the barrel. You can use iron sights, ie the little knubs on top of a barrel, to aim a rifle over short distances, but a scope actually takes some know how to use effectively.)

I personally find this movie to be hated overhated and would have sighed if the Razzie's nominated it too much. It's not very good for obvious reasons but i hardly remember much and the the concepts are more baffling than the actual product. At least it felt like an actual movie with an attempt at a plot, can't say the same for Fifty Shades.
