The thing about the words "spook" and "spooky" is that they come from the Dutch word for "apparition" or "specter." They were used as such when adopted into English, but some time after their adoption, there were a few decades where they were used as an insult to mean "an eccentric person," most often used to derogatorily refer to black people. It's the exact same situation as when the word "monkey" was used to refer to black people. The issue is that these words are not, and have never been, exclusively used in a derogatory fashion, nor are they widely recognized as derogatory terms in the modern day when used in the proper context. If you're not using them to refer to a black person, and you're using the original meaning of these words in the proper context, YOU'RE FINE. If every word that has ever been used to insult someone is considered a slur that no one should ever say, we'd lose half the English lexicon.

Well said. After spending the last hour deep in the etymological vaults I found "spook" went back to government agents (1942) before the first attested racial example - The Tuskegee Airmen calling themselves the Spookwaffe (1945), riffing on "luftwaffe" (literally air+weapon.) In this case they would literally be calling themselves the Fearweapon (from the Scarecrow sense of the word in Scandinavian languages) or Ghostweapon (from the ghost/spectre sense of the word in the other Germanic languages.)

I think socially in many parts of the States, racism against those people is a bit better. It's not like there are separate water fountains or something.
