I compare the two machines and point out the differences. Includes sound sample comparisons. The Alesis seems to sound a little fuller with more presence (high end) than the Ion.
The basic functionality of both units is basically the same. The differences I noticed stem from the differing needs of the end user for each.

It amazes me that the SR-16 is still current after almost 30 years. It still sounds good though.

I agree. The only thing I really don't like about it is how hard it is to program a complete song. I've done a couple, but I had to write out the steps to keep track of where I was at in the programming. Not musical at all from that perspective. Otherwise A+. :-)

@@fishpotpete I reckon this is largely true of all drum machines and hardware sequencers to be honest. A pen and paper is often required. The sounds definitely still hold up today. Thanks for the demo and comparison, it is one of those machines I've been meaning to get for the past 30 years. I have too many drum machines!

So we can use the ION as atrigger for anything, plus assign notes. AWESOME.

MIDI Note is the note that each pad is activated by or sends out when hit (I think it's both send and receive, though I haven't tested). You tap the pad while that setting is highlighted and adjust it to the note you want it to correspond to. Useful if you want to map different keys on a keyboard to trigger the pads, or if you're using the pads to trigger an external drum sampler like EZ Drummer or SSD, Superior Drummer etc. which have different MIDI allocations.

Was there ever a version of the SR-16 with trigger inputs?

You can tap tempo with de STOP button on the Alesis.

I've owned a SR16 since 1990 I own 2 now and use it live. Tape in/out = save user patterns, songs, data to (1990s cassette tape) now to mp3

Just got a 2nd hand ALESIS without the power adapter so I can't test it yet . . but it says 9 Volt AC not 12 Volt DC. I'm confused . . but I think later/earlier versions of the ALESIS had different power supplies is this right?
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 3 года назад
That's interesting. I just checked mine and it says 12 volt DC. But if your says 9V AC, then that's what you'll need. You might check your other power supplies for an AC one. I think those ART MP tube preamps use AC - if you have one of those, it might at least help you make sure the Alesis even turns on.

Sounds like they used a brighter mic on the SR16
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 2 месяца назад
I wonder if it has to do with different algorithm or sampling rates they used in them? You'd think they'd be exactly the same. But obviously they aren't. But different mics would be an obvious choice as well. Good comment!

I think they used better output stage in the sr16. Nothing a little pre amping in a mixer cant fix.

Ion sounds interesting initially because of that aliasing, but it quickly becomes overwhelming.

I looked at it a while back and I think the drum samples/patterns/etc. were fine. But I didn't like the fact it added bass guitar to beat. But looking back, I think I should have played with one to understand all the functionality. At the time, all the RU-vid demo's included the bass and didn't indicate if you could simply turn that off. It would probably be worth getting one at some point... and I probably will because I can't seem to be able to stop buying and selling gear 🙂

Is it possible to mod the idm to add the foot switch connections
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 3 года назад
I didn't open them up so I can't really say if that's possible or not. If you go back to the video at around 8:00 where I do the comparison of the back panels, you can see that the inputs/etc on the right side don't have the same positions/etc. between the two. The first three jacks on the left are probably the same, but having different input jacks on the right side suggests that there's totally different circuitry over there. Plus I'm not sure how the input triggers on the Ion unit fit into the picture. I don't have the Ion anymore. But it wouldn't hurt to get a schematic and open yours up and see if there an obvious place you could mod it to put a foot switch connection in there. Sometimes the circuit boards have enough printed information on them that you can figure it out. Good luck with that one! Let us know if you figure it out.

@@fishpotpete Alright, I have found a pcb for the ion on ebay, and while it does seem to be possible, as the circuitry for the start/stop, and a/b fill are there, there are not any solder points to put a jack onto. While it does seem possible, it is way outside of my technological know how.
@fishpotpete
@fishpotpete 3 года назад
@@removalist1995 that's interesting. If there are places on the board to solder to, you can solder in jumper wires and mount the jacks where ever they will fit. If you can get the Ion for $20, that's a total steal! Go for it!
