Welcome to HVAC with John Israel RU-vid Channel. On this channel I Bring you along on HVAC Service calls, HVAC Installs, HVAC Maintenance and pretty much anything else HVAC related. Enjoy and thanks for watching.
You did good John. We call that the redneck test. If the breaker trips when the compressor is plugged in but it doesn’t when it’s not and there’s no damage to the plug wiring, that compressor is bad point blank. Good work man
I would probably be considered a helicopter; however, I would want my service technician to video and post on u tube. I really appreciate a professional service man. Thank you
You look like you've lost a substantial amount of weight i can see it in your face! Good on you brother! Keep it up! It'll be so good for you in the long run
@1:26 just have a look at L1 and L2 wiring on the contactor. Sweater killed it but would have cleaned up the wiring first for testing. Looks like a lot of voltage drop there.
I like my Subco megger, inexpensive, easy to use and idiot proof, have the Fluke 1577FC new in box but the Subco is just so simple and trust it over an multimeter.
Just a heads up, anytime we see "Federal Pacific" electrical products (FPE), we recommend immediate replacement due to fire hazards. We have found most customers have been extremely receptive to the additional cost and added peace of mind.
I didn't notice if you checked continuity between the 2 hot legs on compressor?? A 220 appliance doesn't have to short to ground to trip it could short to power between the 2 phases.
I would check resistance across the legs on the compressor it probably has a shorted winding, also speculation but the winding probably burned out because the coil is plugged and the head pressure it through the roof. Either way the compressor is obviously shot, good work bud. Also with the land lords try to sell them on preventive maintenance, it's easy consistent money (come in the fall and spring for a filter and a cleaning maybe something else) and the unit will last them a lot longer, you get extra work so everyone wins.
Had a similar problem earlier this spring. The condenser was constantly blowing the breaker, but the coil was clean and the unit would run for about 3 seconds. I took the amps as the compressor started and it jump near 100 amps on a 40 amp breaker and it would blow. My boss told me the windings were screwed up and don't bother, the compressor or unit would need replacement. As to this video, that coil was super packed with dirt and needed cleaning 2 years ago.
There are more ways a compressor could be bad other than it going to ground. When you ohm out a compressor through the windings it should be within one ohm across all the windings. I have also had a compressor not show ground while off but once it fired up and ran it showed ground while the compressor was pumping.
You didn't check voltage incoming and outcoming that contactor.you also didn't check for continuity on compressor's plug, maybe you have a short circuit there but probably the motor is stuck that's why tripped the breaker
Most residential air conditioning equipment sold in the USA today is made in Mexico, and China, since making it is a labor intensive process which is difficult to completely automate. If it was all made here, it would cost quite a bit more to purchase. Even when you buy things 'made in USA', many times some parts in it were made in China, or Mexico to take advantage of lower labor cost outside the USA. China has the additional advantage of huge economy of scale, with giant factories where thousands of workers live on the factory grounds. Today, there is such a labor shortage in the USA, that making much more inside the USA would be impossible. There aren't enough people available to do all the work that would be needed to accomplish all 'inside USA' production. Huge shortages would result if we tried to do that. Inflation would go through the roof. The auto, and many other industries, would shut down from lack of components. It will take decades to bring a lot of manufacturing jobs back to the USA, if it ever happens.
epa regulations, lack of raw resources sourced in usa all prevent everything single thing being USA made. labor shortage is not one of them. China has zero regulations and has almost zero fish left in their oceans and the rivers are pure plastic but they dont give af because they want to be the single supplier of everything.
and actually the Mexican made should be same as American made cause they are American companies I know cause I been through those places.and some compresers can show that they are grounded but are not specially the old Compressors hermetic ones.i ran across some and would hit them across with a 2 by 4 piece of wood and a potential relay you probably heard of.
I got an AC unit that only trips the breaker after its been running for a while. I turn the breaker back on, the AC runs fine but then at 3am the breakers tripped again....Any tips ?
@@WJR1965 I fixed the problem by replacing the 2 capacitors ( Motor start-up and compressor )..I ordered exact matches off Amazon. Funny thing is the AC guy told me I needed to get a new AC system for only $5,000.....LOL the 2 caps cost me under $30.....Sometimes ya just go in the name of Jesus when ya got nothing to lose by trying.
Damn John you look like half the man you used to be! And I mean that in a physical way...did you check the harness? I mean that could of been shorted or something right?
I used a 2x4 and hit the compressor just right when its trying to star and magic happened Whats happening here its that its locked and trying to start pulling all that amps it will overload the breaker and eventually tripp I have seen a lot of units with this symptoms
How long before Zsa heat and Air has the exact same video up ? Hopefully he rolls up in that PrO Master he keeps going on and on about ! Zsa( Doctor 🤣) Get your drivers license first before trash talking any brands !
