Maybe I'm in the minority here thinking this but wouldn't an older lady lolita look absolutely wonderful? Imagine a gray haired lady in classic lolita with a wonderful big skirt. I live.

I'm an older Lolita and a transwoman. Yes, I agree a grey haired lady would look amazing in classic Lolita. I know I don't want to stop wearing Lolita and I hope to see more older Lolitas in the future.

I'm only 30, but I am currently working on incorporating aspects of Lolita fashion into my daily wardrobe. I was into it as a teen, and while I grew out of it as daily wear, I've remained a fan and continued collecting as well as making my own pieces.. Anyway, I would like to imagine that in 20 or so years, I might be senior Lolita, lol..

I am a 35 year old woman thinking about getting a grey wig or a grey/different colored wig and wear Lolita. Something fun that doesn't hide my age, that I can easily can just put on and go since I am a mom - and styling a Lolita do would take some time!!

I'm dating a trans person and let me say one thing that I've learn about trans folk is that safety is a bigger concern than you think. If someone questions your gender even after you corrected them then it's a red flag that it might not be safe.
@WrenHuang
@WrenHuang 6 лет назад
I could totally see that, especially if they're all by themselves. But J-Fashion community in general does have a LOT of LGBT and allies in it. It's very prevelent. I have 2 trans men friends who are into lolita who go to cons in and it meet up and both have said they've never felt attacked, scared, or worried, but this is northern us. so it would be different from other places around the world.

My biggest concern is my safety. I usually find myself comfortable wearing in the city because people are more fashion foward there and don't pay as much attention to what other people wear, but in my hometown I fear getting attention from someone who could hurt me...

Same. Walking around here in anything that looks expensive is basically begging for trouble. I still wear dresses and skirts, but I leave the frilly ones for the house and special events.

I live in an English city (but not one like London or Manchester or something, one where people really look down on people who are "different") and I'm genuinely concerned for my safety if I wear lolita. I can completely imagine the boys from my school seeing me and becoming violent, rude etc.

For the stomach issues one from someone who has them!! I can't wear babydoll style dresses due to my boobs so I had to rule those out, but it's different for everyone. In regards to tight dresses, I eat lighter when I'm wearing lolita. It'll make me feel less bloated and gross, and the dress will not be uncomfortable. So if I'm out in lolita, I stick to what you usually find at tea parties, like small sandwiches and fruit. If you're out all day, I eat small meals throughout. But once I'm home and back in my comfy clothes, I'm having some pizza. Also, no one should judge you for loosening up your waist ties/corset a bit. I do it all the time if I'm uncomfy, and your comfort should come first!

Wow, I'm a trans man hoping this question would pop up. I love lolita and I'm terrified of people not taking my identity seriously (especially since I'm not able to transition right now and I'm very curvy). I'm glad there are other trans guys out there that have the same obstacles as me. It's really comforting.

@Olive O'Connor: I think the best way to put it is that it's an innate feeling you have, no matter what anyone tells you. You don't choose it and you can't change it. Being seen as the gender you are can feel like you're wearing a comfy outfit, but being told your feelings are invalid is like wearing a sweater made out of thorns. You can try learning to deal with it, but it's not easy. Only people who don't care about your emotional well-being would force you to wear that thorn sweater.

I have really bad social anxiety and wearing jfashion was a big step for me. A huge thing for me is the fear that people are looking at me and thinking things about me and when I wear jfashion, at least I know why they are looking at me, because of the fashion, and that kinda makes it better in a weird way. I have no idea if thinking like that will help anyone, but thought I'd still share it just in case.

another trans guy here. i havent worn lolita before but ive loved it for a long time. when i was around 14 i made the mistake of telling my mum that i like lolita which gave her the "proof" she wanted that i wasnt 'really trans'. luckily she now has started accepting me but its been a long time since then and well that hurt a lot. ive always wanted to dress in lolita/ouji but i just worry people will act like my mum again if i do. i already feel stifled by peoples perseption of me as a trans guy and not thinking im 'trans enough' for literally every single tiny thing i do which might be deemed as feminine. people suck and i just wanna wear cute shit

i have a tguy friend who is SUPER into lolita but didn't wanna wear it for the same reason so he ended up wearing ouji and boystyle more often because pants (and looks HELLA cute) when he wears more traditional lolita -dresses and skirts- he says he wont wear a binder if its too hot or he will be out a long time and that he dosnt care -v much- abt ppl questioning his ID because people will question it either way (so it isnt really that different for him in or out of lolita) so tboys consider: there are subgenre of lolita to look more like a prince than a princess and plenty of opportunity to wear pants
@geistervonmir
@geistervonmir 6 лет назад
firelily i dont necessarily think thats always the problem though.. i am trans masc and i enjoy all kinds of feminine clothes and dont really personally like the idea of transitioning for myself? i think the issue is just wanting to do more traditional lolita without feeling like we have to be restricted within a binary and just do what we want but it makes it hard when people tell us we should just do something different or not respect us as we are..

I'm nonbinary. I sometimes present as male. I also wear lolita! Clothes are not gendered. They're just clothes. As long as I remember that I can rock my sad shounen aesthetic as well as my sad shoujo aesthetic any day of the week regardless of how I feel gender wise. Just love the clothes!

Hello! Local trans guy here! I appreciate the video! I honestly didn't think you were going to answer any of the trans questions/comments but I'm happy you did! I have to say, there are certainly trans lolitas out there, but its also... We don't all know each other, and it'd just be hard trying to get a community together of lolitas who are also trans (specifcally for me anyway) because I personally don't know a lot of trans guys/nonbinary/gender noncomforming people who are in the lolita community, or even know what lolita is. I absolutely agree that being trans shouldn't stop people from expressing themselves in any shape or form, however theres a big difference between wanting to do something and not being able to do it. Dysphoria plays a HUGE part in that. I don't think you understand how extremely uncomfortable it is and how terrible it personally makes me feel and other people in the trans community feel when we're misgendered. Its not fun. As a trans guy who has not medically transitioned yet, I get misgendered about 50+ times a day (especially because I work at starbucks and hoh boy customers really do love gendered greetings), so imagine that discomfort and bad feelings amplified A LOT if I were to wear traditionally feminine clothing. Very loud traditionally feminine clothing, mind you. I don't want it to stop me. I want to wear lolita. I cosplay a lot, so I definitely wouldn't mind putting money away to buy lolita outfits, but its knowing that I'd get misgendered so much more (even if it was just for events) that stops me from wearing lolita. Its my discomfort wearing any sort of feminine clothing after YEARS of trying to break out of my shell and claw my way out of the closet that stops me from wearing Lolita because as someone who tries very hard and fails 95% of the time to pass in public, I just can't bring myself to put on a dress anymore. And yes, I know about ouji, not really my style (I know, I know, beggers can't be choosers). I hope that explains a bit more? Possibly? Probably not? This is all just my personal feelings, so take this long ass comment as a grain of salt. Lor, keep being amazing, I love your videos

Yessss ♥ Sack dresses are all I wear on my period; anything pressing on my stomach gives me horrid cramps. They're also great for busty girls because the chest measurements are usually higher (if you're worried about them hiding your figure, just add a matching cinch or belt). Edit: Keep in mind that the more you cinch, the shorter the skirt gets! (This also applies to anything with waist ties, elastic bands, boneless lacing, etc.) You might need a matching underskirt if the cut was already at or above knee-length.

Love the idea of this series! I have been adoring and very casually wearing lolita for a bit, and I recently got up the courage to go to my first event! You saying that getting the shoes most Lolitas wear doesn't matter actually makes me feel better because I have issues with my ankles and my left ankle is one I have to look out for a lot since I've had two really bad sprains with it. I can be a clumsy person and wearing certain footwear that isn't a chunky heel on a boot, flat, or a good in between is usually something I don't care for.

I started wearing vintage dresses about 3 years ago. I know it's not the same, but for the people who are worried about others looking at you--just do it. Yes, some people are going to give you bad looks and judge you. But what you're probably going to find more often is a girl who loves your dress who isn't comfortable wearing it. And she's going to say, "I love you're dress." And it's going to be a wonderful feeling. And when it happens once, you'll feel good and keep doing it. Also, I started really small. I'd do my hair and cat eyeliner, but not wear a dress. I'd have a vintage bow. I'd wear pearls. It got me comfortable enough to wear the dress one day. So maybe start small. Wear some cute cuffs or do some really pastel make-up, and start getting comfortable with the small stuff.

I actually have the opposite issue with the age thing. Especially since the reason I like the fashion (aside from How adorable and frilly it is.) is that it suits my naturally young face. I don't know how many Lolitas I've encountered have told me I perpetuate the misconception of fetish because of the reason I wear Lolita, simply because I admit to the fact that it makes me look younger when paired with my baby face. I mean, it doesn't stop me from wearing it, however it certainly keeps me from wanting to meet any other Lolitas. I remember a comment section in a Lolita fb page where I was accused of age play simply because I made a joke about the way I look in the fashion. Still love the Gothic Lolita aesthetic.

for people who don't feel comfortable wearing tight topped lolita (such as most JSK & OPs, or lolita specific blouses), you can wear a looser/flowy dress blouse with a cute collar or design tucked into a lolita skirt. the silhouette is still there if you tuck the shirt in & a simple matching ribbon under the collar or a broach can fancy that blouse right up. i avoided lolita for SO long due to not being comfortable with tight tops, but this allowed me to wear the fashion and still feel comfortable and very pretty✨

My biggest obstacle really is my mom. I wear it on trips and stuff but I have to hide when I'm home. I used to be really open about but after 2 years of just awful comments it got to a point where I had to stop, at least until I move out. I don't really care about my mom's opinion on my clothes but having her constantly say things about it was way too annoying and not worth it. I have 2 outfits and try to wear them when I can but I miss being a lifestyle Lolita (as I was in my University days) and even though I typed and read aloud an essay about why Lolita is important to me my mom and 2 other family members just made the fashion unfun for me. I can't wait to move....lol. Thanks for the video, if you ever read this :).

Little kids get absolutely stunned when seeing lolita, and a small girl came to me saying I looked like a princess ;-; Also, my 6 year old cousin (lil boy) reaction to seeing a dress I had ordered was asking if he could get one too. I am also a slightly darker skin-tone than most and have a clef chin that often also got made fun of when in Highschool. 10:43 as a trans man, like... that’s why I was so happy to see a male Lolita in that Sugar Coated documentary. It meant so much to me cuz I didn’t even know men could BE Lolita’s or that they were even welcome into the fashion. Being a Cosplay Server who regularly crossplays has helped me personally no longer give a shit about how people view the way I dress, but it still means a lot to me to see male Lolita’s and trans Lolita’s and like... idk. It’s like this feeling of... accessibility I guess?

Well for me, it's of where I live, there is bunch of farmers, hard working people who care more for work than image, which is fine by me, but makes it hard for me to come out in public to enjoy cute different kinds of fashion, I don't know why honestly, I get nervous just thinking about it and when I do go out in public wearing my crazy outfits at age 28, and gonna be a momma soon, I just get weird stares, or people look at me funny, sometimes they comment on my clothes, liking my outfit or someone saying "I don't know how you wake up in the morning and go about your day looking like that" it's like, well for one I don't live to please you and two, because I feel I deserve to wear whatever I want, within reason of course, that my life is completely different from yours, so its like, lol don't fuckin judge me 😣😐😶😓😢😘

My situation is similar to yours! I'm 27, and have a four year old daughter. Where I live it's a lot of country, and most people wear sweatpants and baggy tee's out. I am lucky that I have gotten nothing but nice comments. I have gotten looks, but I try not to assume the worst. I don't know why the person is looking the way we do. When you approach a situation uneasy, then it's very easy to assume that any look that is grumpy/funny/odd is directed at us. When in reality, that's probably not what is going on. Maybe they just always look grumpy, maybe they are stressed, maybe they are shocked but in a good way....I try not to assume the worst and try to assume that they just don't know how to react, which is fair. What I hold onto is 1. It makes me happy, and that's all that matters and 2. It makes enough people happy to tell me that they love it, and I really like that I can make others happy, even if it makes others confused!

Don't mind them and please keep going. I live in small working class town as well. Wearing Lolita in public is nerve-racking but do it. You're still young and have one life to live. Love seeing or hearing about Lolitas past the age of 25.

I feel you :( at some point those comments become tiring and you're kinda "forced" to stop wearing lolita. You can just ignore people like that to some point and then it too much for you. I'm 24 and my ethnicity is Turkish, our culture judges hard to things like this which makes it hard for me to wear it. I get things like "this is the reason why you're still not married" etc :/ I hope for people like us, to find that will again to wear lolita in everyday life. Things like meetings and conventions are a great place to go all out! I would def visit events like that :)

I'd really like to try lolita (gothic, specifically), but what keeps me from doing it is the fact that I am what you would call "plus-size". I have broad shoulders, broad hips and yes, tummy, chest, and behind to match. From what I've seen, lolita dresses tend to be in small sizes and the custom-made ones are just so expensive for my small pockets. Living in a small country, still going through a money crisis doesn't help as well. Also, I might be wrong (and if so, forgive me for that), but it seems to me that there are people who will mistreat you if you are not wearing brand dresses, even though they are not an option. How can someone like me try lolita?
@yuichan6032
@yuichan6032 3 года назад
I know this comment is from three years ago, but if you can, learning how to sow and making your own dresses can be cheaper. Sometimes it actually costs more, but if you plan things out before hand they can be much cheaper. Sewing is a bit hard and you need to be patient, but it's really empowering to make your own clothes.

in my case (and globaly in my country's case) one of the big obstacles we're facing is the lack of offer. i don't mean by it, lack of brands or so on... there's just NO lolita shops, barely no shops selling kawaii stuff, and this in the whole country. there was a lolita shop few years ago, but it died you can say "why don't you buy online", but hey, here's an even bigger issues: it's almost impossible to order stuff online here. i say almost bc it IS possible, but our banking system gives practically no way to safely pay stuff online. for example, we don't have credit cards here - therefore no paypal. only debit cards. and i know credit cards are way safer than debit cards when it comes to online shopping (and i find the credit line system way more practical when it comes to buy kinda expensive stuff like that gorgeous bssd dress. but what am i, a grain of sand in the ocean of our too strict banking system). however since it's still possible to pay with debit cards, there comes the safety issue. for example, my bank would NEVER give a fuck abt some hacker emptying my bank account. i personaly decided to open a second bank account i would provide from time to time only for online purchases, & keep my original account completely separated, where i'll keep most of my provisions (it's very new thing for me, please tell me if there's still a risk from that please) well next issue is... hum, we just do NOT have a lolita community in my country. which means no possibility for going to meets up & such. and guess what? we live in a FUCKING ISLAND so we're just, like, cut from teh outside world. i think the closest community i can go to would be the south african one (i live in madagascar, no, it wasn't just a movie name)... idk if they're still active lolitas tho. it's a shame i started enjoying this fashion so late DX But yeah, i had to wait to get a freaking job to afford my freaking hobbies DX nevertheless i don't have enough words to say what kind of an administrative HASSLE it is to go to a foreign country from here. and since in the end i'd rather save money to buy lolita stuff, i'd refreign from spending all my money on just one trip :( also, i really feel that "lack of representation" lovely lor is talking about. well, even if we don't have a real "lolita community" there are still some girls who are wearing lolita sometimes. but mostly gothic lolita. years ago i thought they were pretty cool. but now i'm more immerged in lolita fashion i actually think... they were kind of... i'm trying to stay polite and comprehensive but it's kinda difficult... so i won't say anything; just to say that it WASNT lolita at all. maybe gothic... but even in the gothic community i dont think they would call them gothic. a failed attempt at gothic lolita would be the right description. but i truly can't blame them. i've already said we're practically cut from the outside world here, it's very hard to find someone that can actually "teach" you how to be lolita i think the issue abt money has already been discussed plentily on the video "why is lolita so expensive", yes, the ultimate means to get a nice new brand part is to save up... on the other hand... when you think that the average salary in my country is like just a tiny tiny fraction of how much an angelic pretty dress costs, it can be truly disheartening. rn i don't have too much charges to pay for so i think it would take me abt half a year to save enough money to pay for an "average" dress from a japanese brand (new piece). but i actually have already resigned myself to buy most of my stuff from taobao (fortunately some brands there are truly good and way more affordable)- still since i'm a big fan of bssd i may buy a dress from them, one day. still with Wunderwelt DX

The people staring was such a problem for me since I do wear nerdy shirts or I cosplay for conventions or lolita style sometimes and I was very self aware of people looking at me. And I thought they would hate things or be mean. But last week there was this big man staring at me and I was super uncomfortable but after the 40 minute bustrip he spoke up to me and said "I love the sweater you are wearing and I enjoy that show too" so sometimes people are suuuper nice!!! I have also had people ask me about my hair if it was real or not when wearing lace front wigs and just being curious. When you are out and about in a style you should always see yourself as the advocate for that fashion and when people are curious respond with kindness back! :))) I love educating people as I am a teacher by trade and heart #spreadjoyandkindess. Also love the video keep the good work going!!

And if you're willing to take the time to learn to sew, there's a point where the notions and fabrics you need to make a lolita coord (at least the dress/cuffs/accessories) are less expensive than buying the dress/cuff/accessories outright. And sewing, especially based on a pattern, can be somewhat easy to pick up if you start simple!

This is @sparklyandglitter ! I hadn't seen this video until now because I had given up on lolita. I had thought that the shoes had to be so specific, I'd need to not only save and buy a dress, and then tights/etc of course, but also super specific shoes for almost every one. I'll admit that I needed to do more research too, rather than just giving up. :) Anyway, it's so encouraging to know that's not the case, and also that it's ok to have comfy shoes or shoes I can wear with other things, too. I've got about half a cord already...I think I'll give it a shot now. Thank you. :)

Addendum: All this worry actually came from the idea I had for awhile that unless you had at least a couple super well-known, expensive-for-Lolita pieces, you were ita. I don't mind giving good money for a quality item, but that was out of my reach. It's been really nice to know that this mindset is usually not the case (at least from what I've learned through more recent research.) Thanks again!

Hi! Lolita with digestive issues here! One of the main issues with wearing lolita with those sensory issues on the stomach are petticoats and bloomers that have the elastic that makes it tight around your waist. I would suggest investing in a shorter petticoat that you can wear around your hips and *coughskipthebloomerscough*

As a trans masculine person I really relate to the fear of being "too feminine". It sucks that there is such a negative stigma around dressing more feminine as a trans guy, especially because i really love lots of "girly" fashions. I wear tons of pink and like to paint my nails and even then I get comments saying that I must be faking and that I'm too feminine and girly, so the thought of wearing Lolita terrifies me.

Hey Lor, So that trans man who wanted to be a lolita touched on a similar situation for me. I'm not trans but I am a male to female crossdresser who very much would like to try the fashion. I run into two obstacles: one is sizing. I'm not a big guy, (5'9, 165) but I know that Asian fashion brands often sell in much smaller sizes so I have that concern. I also have very broad shoulders and chest so that doesn't work in my favor. Second is just basic stigma. A guy wearing a dress or dressing as a woman will usually raise a lot more eyebrows than vice versa. And lolita fashion is feminine beyond modern standards. The second problem I can get over with just gathering some basic courage, but I am curious about the first. I'm not sure if you've run into a straight cisguy that wanted to wear lolita, but I guess it just goes to show that anyone, regardless of gender or orientation can be interested in it.

My fear is that I am a babybat, yet I really want to get into lolita (gothic lolita). My fear is that I'll try to join 2 scenes/communities that are known for being somewhat aggressive to new comers and that maybe I'm putting too much on plate that I might not be able to handle. Yet I love lolita so much that I can't resist it and goth music is something that I have fallen hard in love with. Doesn't change the amount of anxiety I feel by wanting to be apart of different subcultures it just feels extra intimidating

my biggest problem that is holding me back from wearing lolita is that i'm muslim and wear a headscarf. i dont know how to style my headscarf with lolita and i feel like i will get judged by other lolitas for not wearing a nice wig and acessories. also finding lolita dresses that are below the knees is really hard to find as well as finding tights that are opaque enough not show my legs. if anyone knows what brands for tights and blouses that are white and not sheer i would really appreciate it. these are the only reasons why i'm holding myself back from wearing lolita.

My obstacle is being almost 6 feet tall! I’ve seen tall girl Lolita forums talking about sizing issues, and how there are some brands that are tall girl friendly. I’m still worried where the waistline is going to hit me on my incoming dress. My legs are super long (36 in inseam) so OTKs are ruled out because they’d be under my knee. My torso isn’t that elongated however everyday dresses do come up short on me.

Hanna, thank you so much! I always feel like when I wear Lolita my glasses swallow my eyes, even though they are normally flattering. I do as much non-makeup beauty routine stuff as I can, though I do tend to not quite know what to do with my eyebrows... Thank you again for your help! Isabel Perry I have freckles so I don't wear foundation...most of the time I am bare faced anyways. My trick is to use tinted chapstick on my lips (burt's bees has a good selection) and I tint my lashes and brows with hair dye...its tricky but can be done with a mascara wand. Choose a dye that is one or two shades darker than your hair color in the same tone. You can also curl your lashes for an extra lift.
@emiv592
@emiv592 6 лет назад
Isabel Perry I agree with what was said, glasses can look really cute too. If you do want to wear makeup you could possibly just use a dark eyeshadow and a slanted brush to just draw a very tight line next to your top lashes(sounds way more complicated than it is. It is eyeliner for people like me who are bad at eyeliner, so it doesn't matter if its messy if you just smudge it lightly) . It makes your lashes look thicker. You could also add a bit of blush on your cheeks, and that will already make a huge difference to how you look. Put on some lipbalm and maybe mascara and you'll look incredibly cute. From what I understand lolita is a more innocent look anyway, so the natural barefaced look is great to go with it

Makes me think maybe I should make some content about that... I also have a lot to say as a lolita of color, a birth giving parent (it is shocking how angry that makes people), and what I like to call being an “elder” lolita (I’ve had people call me old more times than I know what to do with in this fashion, I’m in my 30s, I’m quite young still). It’s probably easier for me to post on Instagram tho... RU-vid has gotten weird. I also wasn’t clear where this initial post was? I think my biggest obstacle is that I'm overweight and thus simply not able to fit in (most?) brand clothing. I've heard about tips like shirring and resizing, but to be honest I doubt that shirring would be flexible enough for me, along with me being too nervous to edit brand dresses anyway... I've considered going DIY, but I have no idea how to properly transfer patterns to paper or how to even start making/finding patterns in the first place. (Not to mention that blouses and the like are already not an easy thing to make...) (I should also add that I don't use FaceBook at all, so I can't really add comments there or look for communities.)

Hello, trans-male here. I have gone threw the same problem the person in the video has stated. Due to being feared I would be questioned for wearing such. To where I found an alternative, that being "Ouji"(prince) fashion/Lolita. Where it's a more masculine sytle, to where I still seen as a male in such. But still has the frills and bows like normal Lolita. However I will say it is harder to find online, so you most likely need to thrift for stuff like i have. But if you are a trans-male i say give it a try for yourself.
