I wonder if he has issues with his mother or female caregiver growing up which is why he enjoyed watching that. Not excusing it but maybe this is s reason.

I imagine some manager was following some policy, without regard to what was really wrong. I know a Walmart employee who lost her job by trying to help a customer, (who'd forgotten her cell phone, and asked her to keep it for her until she could return for it.) She violated a policy, (phone was supposed to go to store's lost and found--where it was likely to be stolen,) and was fired for it. Everything these days is about following laws, rules, and policies, rather than helping each other. We've forgotten that the rules are a guideline--not a structure to beat people against. The rules are there to put us into little boxes, and keep us compliant.

Thank god there's still some sanity and basic decency left in America. I'm watching from the UK where atleast here you can call the police and trust that they would make sure she got home safely. They'd even make her a cup of tea before leaving!

This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time. Not to take away from the brutality of the police response, but this could have all been prevented had the employees exercised some discretion and though, “hey, she’s offering to pay, let’s let her pay” and call it a day! Instead, no, they have to protect $13 profit for the gigantic multinational corporation 🤦‍♂️ thank you and your coworkers for having this clarity of mind, I wish those employees in this particular case had thought that way.

@@Flick14 Yeah I'm in the UK and used to work in Tesco when I was a bit younger. I caught a shoplifter, a large adult male shoplifting. He had a full deep bed trolley and tried to slip through a closed till with nobody operating it. He glanced around to see if he'd been spotted then sat down at the bench for about 30 seconds while I discreetly signalled a supervisor. Then he got up and sidled toward the exit where my supervisor and security guard stopped him and took him to a side room. Lots of staff had been summoned as backup but none touched him. When the police arrived they weren't aggressive or bullying. Even after cctv and my own testimony they still handled this thief reasonably without force. And yeah we had our own fair share of confused old folk but we never called the cops. Occasionally the paramedics were called when someone was confused beyond our ability to help. (Sometimes the managers would let us give them rides home or summon relatives.) Or they got injured but we never called the police.

We do need to screen out sadists and the abusers from the police, but at this point that would leave us with maybe 10% of the force left if we fired all of the bad cops. They still could have and should have accepted her payment. I saw a video from the store and she tried to exit via another door and was stopped. She wasn't trying to hide the items, so I don't think they could legitimately charge her with shoplifting. They in Walmart need better training, and the whole Loveland Police Dept. needs to clean house and start over.

I did pick up on that and researched the law because it seemed so crazy. Most states require a person to leave the store with the loot to be charged with theft. In Co. an individual could be charged with shoplifting even if they don't exit the store if they hide the crap they are trying to steal. Garner hid nothing. I think it's possible that whoever called the police did so out of malice knowing how Loveland police abused people.

We all know that Walmart stops customers and checks receipts inside the store, though I have not heard that here; she tried to pay and gave back the items; if this was inside the store, and she never walked out the door with unpaid items, nothing was shoplifted. No law was broken.

Here's the problem that people blaming Walmart are having trouble understanding (and I get - you're mad - so am I - but Walmart had nothing to do with it. They have SECURITY CAMERAS, that can't differentiate between a thief and a forgetful old lady. They are not trained to tell if someone is acting, or really in Dementia. Regardless, ONCE THE SECURITY CAMERA records someone walking out without paying, a security guard is required to confront them, get their identity, log the incident, fill out a report - and then report it to the police. They have no discretion in this matter - what if someone was using her to steal things in other stores? Unlikely, but you see the dilemma. They would be fired if they didn't follow these security procedures - and rightfully so. The fact that they let her walk out of the store says volumes - they clearly did what they could, in the middle of a typical Walmart understaffed, busy day. THE POLICE, dear angry people, are the ONLY ONES who are truly guilty, here, of crimes so egregious that they deserve prison time for what they did. THE POLICE had the discretion to simply calla family member, and take her home - Walmart had already discharged their instructions, following company policy, and LET - HER - GO. Karen offered to pay after being stopped by an employee of Walmart, even pulling out a card. They kept the merchandise and she left to go home. The employee still decided to call the police.

@@dirtabd not necessarily college, but certainly specific course work, psychological analysis and testing, more intensive training about dealing with the various populations not just so called hardened criminals. They need to know they are to protect not brutalize. They should make them carry a raw egg for a week like they do kids in school and record their every waking moment to see how they handle that. Make them do internship in emergency rooms, psych wards, and with social workers, teachers to see how to deal with people and recognize problems and how to use their heads to solve things. These people should never have gotten a badge.
