I had access to a cholesterol diagnostic machine at work. I used it to test Omega fish oils by taking each brand for a month. Tests conducted over six months. None of the costco omega fish oil or krill oil did anything to change the HDL, LDL or total. The omega oil that did change the HDL was the prescription form not the OTC omega oil. I think it had to do wit the processing for the OTC omega oil. BTW NYT had an article that noted the same. What changed the HDL was taking either virgin (real ones) olive oil or cold pressed flax seed oil (Barlean). These two oils improved 50% increase in HDL.

No cooking, just for use with salads. 4 to 6 tablespoon of olive oil or flax seed (total) per day. Don't use the pill form of these oil because the "molecular distilation" remove something from these oils.

Great video Thomas - as usual, of course! FYI, since this video was made: Costco’s Kirkland Brand Wild Alaskan Fish Oil 1400 mg no longer contains soy; or at least it’s not on the ingredient label anymore. Again, FYI and for what it’s worth. Keep up the outstanding work!

@@Kyman23 You’re welcome, and thanks for the reply. I always thought that soy being an ingredient on the Kirkland 1400 mg fish oil was an accident or a mistake in the labeling anyway, even before they removed it. Why would fish oil contain soy? It didn’t make sense. Also, for what it’s worth, Costco has a new line of fish oil they started carrying, along with their other brands, since Thomas’s video. It’s Triple Strength Omega-3 Fish Oil from Sports Research. Each capsule is 1250 mg, but with 1055 mg of Total Omega-3s! Incredible! The only problem is that it’s a little pricey. Again, for what it’s worth. Thanks again!

The amount per serving of the powder turmeric makes it quite a bit more expensive in per unit cost. I do the 1500mg qunol capsules. One capsule is 750mg which is close to the 1000mg dose and comes out to about 6 months worth of servings. And I open the capsules and dump it into smoothies on occasion, which also makes them a kind of nicely portioned travel "pack". I also do enjoy the liquid qunol too for quicker relief on occasion, like if I'm struggling with a headache or my eyes are flaring up, I think of it as one of my personal "first aid" kit supplements. Also love the liquid CoQ10, as it feels pretty quick in effect for me, and I can sweeten my drinks with its monk fruit sweetener(in colder or room temp drinks) and I also enjoy spraying it on my face, it's supposed to be 100% absorption into most if not all tissues, and I believe it with respect to how I feel. CoQ10 kind of "saved" my life a decade back, but the Qunol liquid has been sort of a next level life saver for me. The Ubiqunol pills are probably good, but I find the liquid more versatile.

This video was informative. However, Thomas failed to mention that there are 160 softgels (500 mg) in Kirkland Signature krill oil and only 60 softgels (1200 mg) in the Kori brand. Furthermore, there is more Astaxanthin in the Kirkland Signature (150 mcg vs. 120 mcg). I did the math and decided to go with the Kirkland Signature. (Edit - Kirkland Signature is $23.49 vs. Kori at $23.99)

Since we all have different genetics, what is best varies. Make one change at a time and see how it goes, both for how you feel, your weight and annual blood testing. It is helpful for someone who knows more about science than marketing to give advice. For fish oil, buying canned sardines and anchovies is probably better for cost and getting the whole fish for nutrition.

Thanks for the info. How much Turmeric should one take? That powder was 450 mg/serving. While the Qunol capsules were 1500mg/serving, over 3 times the amount.
@Gio-sx7kt
@Gio-sx7kt 3 года назад
The 1500mg capsules, are two capsules a dose. What I do is take one capsule at 750mg a day which stretches it to a 6 month supply. I also open the capsule and pour them into the smoothie, so that I don't have to eat the capsule, and they optimized this formula to the bare minimum black pepper needed for the researched benefit of the max absorption of curcumin so that one can get max results with less stomach irritation. Too much black pepper can be irritating to some, so it's gentiler on the gi too. I do like the liquid qunol also though, for times where I need quicker relief from a flare up in my inflammation, and it really seems to help a lot, but I take more then the recommended dose, and it usually fully kicks in around 30 minutes later. I consider it like a "first aid" item, that I just use on occasion.
@Gio-sx7kt
@Gio-sx7kt 3 года назад
How much to take can be strongly dependent in your unique case, and in the results you may be seeking, so I'm not personally recommending 750 mg a day, just expressing how much bang for the buck the qunol caps are, when divided up regardless of the dosage one is seeking. It would be cool to see Thomas's take on amounts to take.

I've taken both fish and krill oil omega-3, and I've noticed that krill has less EPA and DHA!

But it absorbs into the the cell much better than fish oil, which is why you only need low levels from krill.

Hi Thomas, thank you for that video. I purchase many of the supplements you covered at Costco and because of the huge selection, it is challenging to know which is healthier than others and why. Looking forward to part 2.

Can you get omega-3 benefits from taking Chia seeds
@Gio-sx7kt
@Gio-sx7kt 3 года назад
Some, but the body still has to convert it like the ala from Flax that he mentions, which is probably going to be at a similar 1% conversion rate, so it's not as good as Omega 3s already converted in meat tissues like fish, and grass fed meats. And Salmon has the Astaxanthin that can help the body better retain the omega3s. And women tend to be more able to convert the plant sourced Omega 3s better then men. So it can also depend on the individual and how effectively their body can convert it. I still love Chia though for a variety of benefits. I found it helpful to drink in water when I was training for roller derby. I never got tired during our group exercises, while others were dead on the ground, so it's still worth consuming imo.

Thank you for putting this together. I was waiting for you to do a haul on supplements. I would like to see more of these. Include more of the protein powders, supplements, collagens etc. You have done alot of episodes on the food items and I think you were missing on giving out information on supplements. I know you have done some episodes on protein powders but that was not enough.

Curcumin: You need 4g daily so do the math ($$$$). If you chew vs. pill form it will stain your teeth.

It's easier & cheaper to put it in our food.
@Gio-sx7kt
@Gio-sx7kt 3 года назад
The cheapest math wise turns out to be the Qunol caps, and because they come in veggie caps they can easily be swallowed or opened up and put in to foods, if preferred. Turmeric doesn't really stain the teeth after a good brushing though, and can help with teeth whitening even, but it can stain the tongue and others surfaces for a bit.

You don't need 4 grams if your absorbing it with black pepper. C'mon now...

Only downside of eating turmeric powder is its taste unless u add in food. If you ever ever tried brushing your teeth it’s makes it whiter though it will stain your toothbrush. Tumeric has antiseptic properties. When we use to get a cut as a kid mom used to dab turmeric on the wound and it would heal the wound very effectively

I believe there's an error in this video. Krill doesn't need to be at a higher dose, at least based on this excerpt from the "Examine" dotcom website: "Krill Oil is an oil that is derived from krill; it contains the same two fatty acids that Fish Oil contains (Eicosapentaenoic Acid, or EPA, and Docosahexaenoic Acid, DHA). However, a large portion of the EPA and DHA in krill is in the form of a phospholipid, with a phosphate group on the end of the fatty acid. This results in higher bioavailability (rate of absorption) of krill oil, and thus the same effects of Fish Oil can be seen with Krill Oil but at a lower dose."
